For sale: 1987 Mazda RX-7 with a Chevrolet V-8 and five speed transmission. This car is in very good/excellent condition with only 42,744 miles. I purchased it from the original owner and have all of the original paperwork for the car (warranty cards, window sticker, owner manuals - even a Mazda first aid kit). It has never been painted or touched up - the body and paint are original (no bondo). It looks like it came out of a time-capsule...even the door latches look like new (see photos). The interior is also in very good/excellent condition. There are no wear marks on the original seats and the carpets still look like new with no signs of wear. The car has never been smoked in so it still smells like a 42,000 mile car. The undercarriage is as clean as the rest of the car - there are no rust holes and it has never been repaired (see photos).
The Vortec 350 V-8 is a low milage engine that came from a Chevrolet truck (roller-cam version). A V-8 conversion kit, from Granny Speed Shop, was used. The engine was partially disassembled, new gaskets and seals were installed and it was re-painted. A new Weiand aluminum intake was installed as well as a new carburator. A new polished Weiand water-pump, new alternator, new a/c compressor, new harmonic balancer, new oil pump and new timing chain were also installed. A new/complete MSD ignition system (ignition box, coil, distributor and wires), new "turbo model" fuel pump and a new fuel pressure regulator was put on. The cooling system was upgraded with a new aluminum radiator and fan. The car runs in the center of the guage, between hot and cold, at all times. The transmission is a Borg/Warner T-5 from a late model Camaro - it also received new seals, the flywheel was re-surfaced, new Zoom Kevlar clutch, new throwout bearing, new slave cylinder and new master cylinder for the hydraulic clutch. The driveshaft was also replaced with a new/heavier version. The exhaust is new/custom and exits in the stock location. The mufflers are Hooker Aero-chambers.
The brake system was upgraded with a new master cylinder, new brake calipers, new brake pads, new stainless steel lines (replace rubber lines) and new drilled/slotted rotors. The wheels and tires were also upgraded - I have the original aluminum wheels with new tires that will be included in the sale.
The car has a/c that was working when the rotary engine was removed - I have installed a new a/c condensor, a/c dryer and a/c compressor. I also replaced the o-rings so that the car can be converted to R134a. A local shop is currently making the a/c lines for the firewall and a/c dryer - I will include them in the sale also when they are completed.
I will provide my phone number to potential buyers with any questions - just e-mail me your contact information. I will also assist with shipping however any costs will be the buyers responsibility. A deposit is required at the end of the auction. The car currently has an antique registration plate that will be included in the sale to another PA. resident.
Thanks for looking and good luck...

Hiss off! Venomous snake takes refuge in Australian man’s engine bay
Wed, Jan 3 2018A man who went out for a walk in suburban Sydney got quite a surprise when he returned to his red Mazda. Left on his windshield was a hand-written note warning him that a venomous red-bellied black snake had taken up residence in his car. "Hi," the note read, "this afternoon a red Belly slithered up into your front left tyre. Please be careful." The snake is a native of wet areas of eastern Australia that can grow up to 2.5 meters (about 8 feet), making it one of Australia's largest venomous snakes. They're considered dangerous, but shy, unlikely to bite unless severely agitated. When Michael Garbutt popped the hood, he found the snake coiled up inside in the corner. "To say I was shocked is an understatement," he told The Sydney Morning Herald. "On reflection I don't think I would have put my hand out to pop the bonnet if I had known it was there." So he took to Google to look for a local snake wrangler and found Andrew Melrose, of Shire Snake Catchers. By the time he arrived, the snake had moved down into the engine. Then it moved behind the wheel guard, and then under the engine to the front bumper, then back to the right front wheel. Melrose said he coaxed it out by gently touching its body. "I've done it my whole life," he said. "It looks simple but if you haven't done it before you can get killed real quick." In the end, Melrose ended up grabbing the snake from the ground outside of the car and dropping it in a bag. The whole de-snaking process took about an hour. Melrose said the snake is common on the swampy peninsula area where it was found, since it finds plenty of frogs, eels and other creatures to eat. He says it's common to find them in cars. "If they get startled they look for the first place that is safe," he said. "The place I found it was very bare. There was no place for the snake to escape. People would have startled it and the only place for it to hide was the car. The driver could have driven off unaware and parked and the snake would have left the car when it felt safe." So let this be a lesson for you, Autoblog readers: familiarize yourself with your local venomous snakes. And keep the number of your local snake wrangler handy at all times. Or just don't move to Australia.Related Video: This content is hosted by a third party. To view it, please update your privacy preferences. Manage Settings. Toyota and Mazda in talks to build joint US auto plant
Fri, Aug 4 2017UPDATE: The Toyota-Mazda deal has been announced. A newer version of this story appears here. Toyota Motor Corp and rival Mazda Motor Corp are expected to announce plans on Friday to launch a joint venture and build a new U.S. assembly plant, a person briefed on the matter said. A new auto plant would be a major boost to U.S. President Donald Trump, who campaigned on promises to boost manufacturing and expand employment for American autoworkers. Japan's Nikkei reported on Thursday that Toyota would take a roughly five-percent stake in Mazda Motor Corp to develop key electric vehicle technologies and jointly build a factory in the United States. The deal could be announced as soon as Friday, the newspaper said. The person briefed on the matter, who was not authorized to speak to the media and requested anonymity, confirmed the Japanese carmakers were planning to build a large plant in a yet to be determined U.S. location and planned future joint efforts on electric vehicles. The same source declined to offer further details, however. Toyota, in a statement, said the two companies have been exploring various areas of collaboration under a May 2015 agreement. "We intend to submit a proposal to our board of directors today regarding the partnership with Mazda, however, we would like to refrain from providing further comment at this time," Toyota said in a statement issued by its U.S. operations. Mazda said in statement that "nothing has been decided yet" and added the company "will have a board meeting on this matter today. We cannot comment any further." Toyota, the world's second-largest automaker by vehicle sales in 2016 and Japan's dominant car company, has been forging alliances with smaller Japanese rivals for several years, effectively consolidating the Japanese auto sector. A new U.S. assembly plant would likely become the prize in a fierce competition among Midwestern and Southern states eager to expand manufacturing jobs. Trump in January criticized Toyota for importing cars to the United States from Mexico. The Republican president also threatened to impose a hefty fee on Toyota if it were to build its Corolla cars for the U.S. market at a plant in Mexico. "Toyota Motor said will build a new plant in Baja, Mexico, to build Corolla cars for U.S. NO WAY! Build plant in U.S. or pay big border tax," Trump said in a post on Twitter. But since January, Trump has praised Toyota for its U.S. investments.
Leaked images show digital gauge cluster for Mazda3
Wed, Mar 14 2018Most everything divulged about the 2019 Mazda3 so far has focused on the trick Spark Controlled Compression Ignition (SPCCI) Skyactiv-X engine. If a series of photos posted on a Chinese website are accurate, it looks like Mazda has novel plans for the cockpit as well. The three images show a three-color, all-digital gauge cluster in two different configurations. The first configuration places a three-digit speedo in the center of a blue-ringed tachometer, with gear indicator and water temp displays on the left, fuel range calculator and what appears to be a funky clock on the right. The second configuration splits the tachometer to the left and the speedo to the right. In between them is what looks like a road surface display for automatic cruise control. Trip info lies just under the blue-banded road, while water temp, fuel gauge, gear indicator and range info line up across the bottom. A swath of empty space on the left could be where Mazda's relocated the current car's passel of warning signals. Of note: Everything around the digital gauges appears to come straight from the current Mazda3. The instrument panel surround, the steering wheel and buttons, the stalks, all of it is lifted from today's car. If the photos are what's headed our way on some trim of the 2019 Mazda3, though, they show a clean, handsome evolution of the no-nonsense cluster in the current compact hatch. Mazda's worked up a head of good press on the run-up to the Mazda3 launch for both the engine and the dynamics. We're told we'll get between 10 and 30 percent more torque from the 2.0-liter SPCCI Skyactiv-X, and about 25 percent better fuel economy compared to today's 2.0-liter Skyactiv-G. Handling-wise, the jinba ittai philosophy — horse and rider as one — has led to engineers reworking everything from tire sidewall stiffness to multi-contoured torsion elements and the mounting and shape of the seats. The hatchback's torsional stiffness climbs by 30 percent, any excess rigidity countered by 7.5 meters of "matrix resin material" applied in 16 places on the body "to absorb vibration and dissipate it as heat." The point has been to eliminate dynamic static between the driver and the road, and then to give the driver the best natural seating position to take advantage of the body's reflexes to dynamic input. At the same time, this digital gauge cluster might also give that driver something tasty to look at. Related Video:
