1985 Mazda RX-7 GSL-SE ChumpCar or LeMons Racer

PROVENANCE:

"This is my 1985 Mazda RX-7 GSL-SE ChumpCar racer. It finished 8th of 32 cars at the 24 hour ChumpCar race in 2010 at the Iowa Speedway in Newton and 14th of 65 cars at the 25.5 hour Championship race at the Iowa Speedway in 2011."

The RX-7 has 190,000 miles on it. It is a 13b fuel injected twin rotary engine with 5 speed manual transmission.

SAFTEY:

Autopower 12 point bolt in cage with a front welded re-enforced bar across the front dash. (worth about $1100 by itself)

             Autopower Window Net

             RCI 5 point racing harness

RCR Racing Seat (adjustable back and forth to accommodate different driver heights)

             Fire Extinguisher

             Rally Leather Wrapped Steering Wheel

Killswitch & Push button Start inside

             Killswitch Outside

             Tow Hooks

MISC:

All Gauges work with exception of the fuel gauge (I have new sending unit)

All Lights and Defrost works (great for rain races)

Cross drilled and vented rotors with Ceramic Pads

Unique 15" Steel Wheels (2 sets)

             Two 5 gallon fuel jugs

             Lots of extra parts

THE GOOD:

This is a very solid car. I bought it from a guy in Madison, WI who had it stored from 1999 till I bought it in 2009. It has a title and is even has License plates registered to it in the State of Iowa. This is a remarkable well handling car. At the Iowa Speedway we could take any line into any corner and it stuck like glue. On the oval portion of the 25.5 hour race, it turned 29 second lap times and you only had to breathe the throttle going into turn 2. This car ran thru downpours without a single issue. You could steer the car easily with the gas due to the limited slip differential. Remarkable and solid braking performance. Not a ton of torque from the rotary but great high rpm power. This car is easy and a blast to drive!

THE BAD:

Has new 60k mile motor (questionable). The rear seal blew on the old motor getting it ready for a race last year. Everything is installed. Still working on getting the fuel pump and ignition to work. Needs exhaust pipe run from manifold to rear.

THE UGLY:

Has some dents from the last race thanks to overzealous drivers in an Acura Integra, Porsche 944, BMW 325i and a Subaru Imprezza (thanks guys!). It's only cosmetic and most dents will pop out. But it's a ChumpCar or LeMons racer and should look pretty to begin with.

BONUS:

Will thru in my Black RCI medium one piece Race Suit, RCI Race Gloves and size 9.5 Race Boots.

Also have extra set (8 total) of P205/50R-15 tires and 15' Unique wheels too!

If seriously interested, I would highly recommend calling me to discuss any concerns or questions. I will also be more than glad to send any pictures of anything you want to see. I love this car and have lots of great memories with her, but I have too many other toys and not enough time. . .

Thanks for looking!

2019 Mazda3 fuel economy announced for AWD, hatchback models

Wed, Mar 20 2019

Although Mazda engineers gave us fuel economy numbers for one configuration of 2019 Mazda3 at the car's Los Angeles debut, there were still a few versions left out. Now Mazda has released the data for every body style, drivetrain and transmission configuration. That includes the all-new all-wheel-drive iteration, which we will have a full review of this week. Discerning these numbers is a tad tricky since there are three powertrain combinations for each 2019 Mazda3 bodystyle, and they all get slightly different fuel economy. We've listed the different combinations in a chart below: There are a few key takeaways, the first being that the sedan is always the most efficient version of the Mazda3, likely because of better aerodynamics compared to the hatchback. Second, all-wheel drive will cost you fuel economy due to the extra weight of the axles and differential, and the added drag on the engine. Third, the most efficient versions of each body have the same fuel economy numbers as the outgoing Mazda3. The manual transmission-equipped Mazda3 has actually improved fuel economy over the old version by 2 mpg on the highway, and 1 in combined driving. Also worth noting is that only one trim level of the sedan is available with cylinder deactivation and front-wheel drive, and that's the top-level Premium trim. Opting for all-wheel drive on any trim or body style will come with an engine with cylinder deactivation. The hatchback is also the only Mazda3 available with a manual transmission, and it's only offered on the front-drive version.

2002 Mazda MX-5 Miata powered by a Jaguar-sourced V6 for sale

Tue, Aug 25 2020

Cars & Bids, a relatively new site that specializes in auctioning modern enthusiast cars, is selling a 2002 Mazda MX-5 Miata. While that's hardly unusual, this example lost its four-cylinder engine and gained a Jaguar-sourced V6. Pulling a 3.0-liter six out of a 2000 S-Type and dropping it into an unsuspecting Miata is apparently easier than it sounds. England-based Rocketeer offers a kit that makes the swap reasonably straightforward, though the listing notes the factory air conditioning system is not compatible with the new engine. Cold air aside, the installation is done so neatly that it looks like Mazda envisioned the Miata with a bigger engine. Jag's V6 inevitably adds weight to a roadster praised globally for its nimble handling, but it also brings a whole lot of horsepower to the table. Left stock, a 2002 Miata is powered by a 1.8-liter four-cylinder that makes 142 horsepower and 125 pound-feet of torque. The example listed on Cars & Bids puts 220 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque under the driver's right foot, figures that easily offset the weight gain. And, somewhat surprisingly, the six spins the rear wheels through a stock five-speed manual transmission. Flyin' Miata sway bars and Koni shocks improve handling. Close the hood, and this Jagazda looks like a run-of-the-mill 18-year-old Miata. The seller made no modifications to the body, it's still painted in its original shade of silver, and he kept the stock 15-inch wheels. The dual exhaust tips hint at the V6, but they're subtle enough to surprise more than a few racers at the next autocross event. The auction is live now, and bidding stands at $4,250 as of writing with about three days left before the hammer drops. If you miss your chance to bag it, several shops sell kits that let skilled shade-tree mechanics shoehorn Mazda's K-Series V6 (which powered the MX-6 and the Ford Probe, among other cars) into an older Miata. New Mazda3 looks just like Mazda Kai concept in spy photos

Tue, Nov 13 2018

Just a couple of weeks before the official reveal, one of our spy photographers caught the next-generation Mazda3 out testing in minimal camouflage. The car was a hatchback model, testing alongside a VW Golf and Audi A3, and was only wrapped in thin vinyl. As a result, we can clearly see that the new compact Mazda hatchback looks just like the stunning Kai concept from last year's Tokyo Motor Show. The car features effectively the same nose and profile of the concept. The main grille is larger than the current model, and it leans forward aggressively. The windshield is very low and sleek. The rear portion of the car is dominated by the very thick C-pillar that leans far forward, augmenting the car's athletic stance. The window sill at the rear kicks up sharply, and the rear window doesn't wrap around or bulge out, giving the car a very tight, taut shape. It's not just the outside of the 3 we get to see. We get a good look at the interior. It also looks very much like the Kai's interior, with the focus being the driver. The gauges are flanked by air vents that blend into the shape of the instrument binnacle. The rest of the dashboard is left as uncluttered as possible. The climate controls and vents all reside in the same long horizontal plane. The infotainment screen, which appears to be touch-sensitive based on one spy photo, is canted toward the driver. Mazda's rotary controller does return, as seen in the center console. Also in the center console is the manual shift knob, which we expect, or at least hope, will continue to be available in the U.S. We'll have answers to all our questions about the Mazda3 at the end of this month when it makes its debut at the L.A. Auto Show. We'll also see the sedan version of the car. The powertrain is the biggest mystery at the moment. Mazda showed the Kai with the Skyactiv-X engine, Mazda's spark-controlled compression-ignition gasoline engine. We've driven a development car with the engine, and Mazda seemed to intend the new Mazda3 to use it, but we're not sure if the engine will be ready for the car's launch. If not the Skyactiv-X engine, or perhaps in addition to, Mazda will probably use versions of its current engines. It could carry-over the naturally aspirated 2.0-liter and 2.5-liter four-cylinders currently used. The latter may use the cylinder deactivation now used on the Mazda6 and CX-5. We would love to see the company finally offer the turbocharged 2.5-liter engine from the Mazda6, CX-9, and now CX-5.
