This listing is for a 2002 Mazda Protege5 hatchback automobile. I am the second owner and have owned it since it had 7k miles on it. It currently has 133k miles and is in great running condition with a clean Carfax record. However, it does have noticeable hail damage as you can see from the many detailed photos displayed here. At the time the hail damage occurred (2005?) I decided it was better for me to pay off the loan with the insurance money than get the purely cosmetic hail damage repaired. It did not affect the car mechanically in any way and the windshield although chipped, has lasted to this day. A few years and a toddler later, we needed a larger vehicle and now have no use for this great little car.
As I said, it runs great and has had some significant things done rather recently including:
New front struts! (2013)
New front brakes (2012)
New rear brakes (2011)
Replaced timing belt (at about 100k miles)
New battery (2011)
This is a nice reliable, very fun car if you can get past the hail damage (or perhaps repair it yourself or for minimal cost). From inside the car you hardly notice it and because of the new struts and low profile tires it handles great and is very fun and snappy to drive. The interior is in excellent condition overall, see photos! I also own a 2000 Mazda Protege ES, so I can attest to the quality of these cars. Here are a few of the details and amenities:
It's clean, no oil leaks either.
And so is the Carfax record! Two owners, no reported accidents.
Recent passing emissions test is included as per Colorado state law.
16” alloy wheels (some clearcoat damage from Colorado winters)
Four Firestone Winterforce snow tires with good tread (fronts have probably 50-60%, rears have about 90% remaining, note: I have absolutely no way to measure exactly, see photos of tire tread)
Two Falken Ziex ZE512 performance summer tires with probably 90+% tread remaining.
Tinted windows
Aftermarket Pioneer stereo CD player with 1/8” front aux input for iPod, etc.
Rear view mirror displays direction and outside temp.
Spare donut tire is good.
Never smoked in, mostly a one person commuter.
Regular oil changes...no I don't have every record but they were done usually around 5k miles which is what is currently recommended (every 3k is overkill according to current professional opinion and is an unnecessary burden on the environment).
The interior and mechanics are in excellent condition overall, but there are a few things worth mentioning: the auto-dimming rear view mirror malfunctioned of its own accord and doesn't dim (see photo--hasn't bothered me at all), a scratch in the bottom part of the glove box, right rear window tint job was damaged by the dealer sticker when I bought it (an easy fix if it bothers you), carpets are worn in a couple of places (normal wear and tear), couple of cracks in the windshield (you'll probably want to replace it), top surface of rear bumper is scratched (I have used the included touch up paint to fix but of course they are still somewhat visible), and there is a faint whine from the left rear wheel, could be a bearing or just a tire that needs rotated (which they do).
I think that's it but I will revise if I think of anything else. The pictures tell the story and I have included MANY for you to look at so that you know what you are bidding on (I am a pro photographer by the way). Note that because of the way the car is designed, the doors and quarter panels were exposed (minimally) to hail, though the hood and roof took the brunt of it.
I have never had a bad feedback in 10+ years and hundreds of transactions on ebay and I'm not about to start now. I have never sold a car on ebay but I have sold and shipped fragile high end bicycles and cameras worth as much or more than this car. Happy bidding and let me know about any questions you may have.
The car is priced to sell, lowball offers will be ignored.
Acceptable payment options include cash or a cashiers check (will require validation before sale is complete). No money orders or personal checks please.

This California rally is vintage Japanese car heaven
Wed, Apr 13 2016What's so good about the future? This is what I was thinking when some folks at Mazda invited me and a handful of other journalists to join them on the second-annual Touge California. It's a rally for classic Japanese cars that covers a huge chunk of Southern California's twistier roads, where fans get to test their beloved machines. Oh, and it attracts swarms of admirers with cameras. "It is not a race. It is a vintage touring rally," said Ben Hsu, editor in chief of Japanese Nostalgic Car, and one of the coordinators of the event. "In Japan, touge most definitely refers to racing, whether timed, in touge battles, or drifting antics. Touge California was created to give drivers of Japanese classics a taste, as close as possible, of the types of roads their cars were forged on." Touge California was created to give drivers of Japanese classics a taste, as close as possible, of the types of roads their cars were forged on. We started the day on a mundane stop-and-go freeway drive from Mazda's Irvine headquarters to Escondido, me riding shotgun with my journalist co-driver in a 2016 Miata. But Mazda also brought along three heritage products on this trip – a 1985 RX-7 GSL-SE, a 1978 GLC three-door hatchback, and a 1975 REPU (rotary engined pickup) – serving as reminders of the company's history in the U.S. The group of Mazdas was joined in Escondido by many more Mazdas. And Toyotas, Hondas, Datsuns – so many 240Zs – and the odd Subaru and Mitsubishi. In total, 28 cars were at the start line. "We doubled the field this year, and made the route longer – 200 versus 120 miles," Hsu said. "We separated the cars into two run groups based on speed and a mix of makes and models." I spent the first part of the rally in the Mazda pickup to get a taste of rotary power. It was my first experience behind the wheel of a Wankel-powered vehicle, my first time driving a small Japanese truck from the '70s, and my God that thing has a lot of power. I had a few scares when I had to stand on the brakes, and I found the shift throw's immense length disconcerting – it felt like third gear engaged somewhere in front of the dashboard, with fourth somewhere in the bed. The truck was a great introduction to the rotary, however, and to '70s Japanese cars. Especially in Southern California, old Japanese cars aren't as novel to casual observers as they might be in other parts of the country.
Mazda LM55 Vision Gran Turismo reshapes a winning form [w/video]
Fri, Dec 26 2014In the history of endurance racing, there's only ever been one Japanese automaker to win the famous 24 Hours of Le Mans, and as you might have guessed, that was Mazda in 1991 with the 787B – which was, incidentally, the only one ever to win the race under rotary power, or really anything other than a conventional piston engine. That racing success is something Mazda can be proud about, even over two decades later, and it's a badge of honor the automaker is revisiting with the LM55 prototype you see here. Only instead of unleashing it on the Circuit de la Sarthe – or really any actual race track – the Mazda LM55 Vision Gran Turismo is bound only for PlayStation. The latest addition to the Vision Gran Turismo lineup, the LM55 takes inspiration from the aforementioned 787B but gives it a modern KODO design theme. The result is pretty stunning, taking a more radical approach than the Skyactiv Prototype the company is fielding in the United SportsCar Championship or even the dearly departed, head-turning Furai concept. But unlike that diesel prototype and the Wankel-powered 787B, Mazda hasn't specified any kind of novel powertrain for the LM55, fictitious or otherwise - saying only that it has "advanced drive train technology that offers the epitome of power, efficiency and durability and the result is an exceptional power to weight ratio exceeding that of most cars in its class." Just what that class would be we'll likely never find out, but if you don't have a PS3 loaded with GT6 (or, for that matter, even if you do), you can scope out the virtual action in the slideshow above and the rather Christmas-y video below. Compact SUV Comparison: Specs, pics and reviews of every brand's crossover
Wed, Jul 25 2018Honda CR-V vs Toyota RAV4. Chevy Equinox vs Ford Escape. Mazda CX-5 vs Subaru Forester. Whichever combinations of compact crossover SUV you're considering, there's probably a comparison test or chart out there to read. Heck, you can even create a three-car comparison yourself here at Autoblog. However, if you want a bunch of that information all in one convenient place, well, here it is. Our mega comparison of specs, features and photos of compact SUV entries from every mainstream manufacturer that sells them. That includes the 2018 Chevrolet Equinox, 2018 Ford Escape, 2018 GMC Terrain, 2018 Honda CR-V, 2018 Hyundai Tucson, 2019 Jeep Cherokee (it's already on sale with notable changes from 2018), 2018 Jeep Compass, 2018 Kia Sportage, 2018 Mazda CX-5, 2018 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross (none of Mitsu's SUVs are perfect fits for this segment, so we deemed the MEC the most competitive fit), 2018 Nissan Rogue, 2018 Subaru Forester, 2018 Toyota RAV4 and 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan. We can update this comparison as more information about 2019 models is released, most notably the Forester and RAV4. Now, there are certainly some models that are smaller (Nissan Rogue Sport) or larger (Kia Sorento) that could also be considered, but we figured it was wise to stick with those in this sweet spot of comparable size and price. We also included links to Autoblog reviews, buying guides and smaller comparisons. Engines and Transmissions With rare exception, this segment features four-cylinder power. Sometimes it's turbocharged, often its not, but standard engine outputs are generally in the same ballpark. Therefore, we'd recommend focusing on torque output, as it's what will make a difference around town or when passing, and weighing that versus fuel economy (the Chevy Equinox, GMC Terrain, Honda CR-V and Mazda CX-5 make particularly strong cases in this regard). Many drivers aren't too fond of continuously variable transmissions (CVT), either, so that's another thing to consider and note during a test drive. As you can see, several models are available with performance upgrades. Besides the Jeep Cherokee's available V6, all are more powerful turbocharged four-cylinder engines. The exception to this would be the Honda CR-V and Ford Escape, as their 1.5-liter turbo engines don't prioritize performance. Instead, they serve as overall upgrades to the base naturally aspirated engines standard on only their base trim levels (CR-V LX and Escape S).
