Lava Orange 2005 Mazdaspeed MX-5 Miata GTMazdaspeed Miata (MSM). This car was built on Wednesday, August 18, 2004, the 117th 2005 Mazdaspeed Miata. It is a GT model. That means it has leather seats with silver stitching, and a cloth (not vinyl) convertible top. It is completely original and has no modifications. Mechanical condition: Excellent. This car has been well maintained. I have service records from Mazda. Everything on this car works including ice-cold A/C, Bose CD changer. Cosmetic condition: Excellent. There are no door dings or scratches in the paint. The interior looks brand new. So does the engine compartment and inside the trunk. There are no chips or scratches in the windshield. No damage or paint work. Clean Carfax. Clear title. Issues: The wheels have scrapes from scraping curbs but no major damage. The paint has water spots in some areas that are visible in the right lighting conditions. My friends say these can be removed with a buffer. Recent maintenance: The following maintenance has been performed in 2013 and less than 500 miles ago: New tires (Toyo Extensa HP 205/40-17), oil and filter change, wiper blades, A/C and alternator belts replaced, air filter replaced, new, correct battery (Marathon AGM), "bog solenoid" cleaned and lubricated, rear brakes adjusted, transmission gear oil replaced (Motorcraft full synthetic), differential gear oil replaced (Redline 75W-90), roll-up window channels cleaned and lubricated (Shin-Etsu grease), brake fluid flushed and replaced, clutch fluid flushed and replaced, coolant flushed and replaced, upper and lower shift boots replaced. Included with car: Sale includes a color-matching hardtop which has a rear defroster and a headliner. It also includes one original soft top ("tonneau") cover, which is like new and is shown in photos. Also includes one extra cover which is installed under the hard top to protect the cloth top. Car comes with two original "switchblade" type keys. Original factory wheel locks are included too. Also includes owner's manual. How rare is this car? The MSM was only built in two model years, 2004 and 2005. A total of only 5428 were built. Only 1428 2005 models were built. Lava Orange was only available in 2005. Only 394 Lava Orange cars were built, making it the rarest color of MSM. Detail photos

Mazda's game plan: Compression ignition, superchargers, EVs — and still fun to drive
Tue, Aug 8 2017Today, Mazda announced its new Sustainable Zoom-Zoom 2030 initiative. Dumb marketingspeak name aside, this is Mazda's general plan to make its cars more efficient while still keeping Mazda's fun-to-drive character. The most notable part of this announcement is Mazda's new Skyactiv-X engines and the addition of EVs and electrified powertrains starting in 2019. As we reported back in January, this new supercharged Skyactiv-X engine family will be the first to use high-compression ignition, or HCCI, rather than traditional spark plugs. Each year, fuel economy and CO2 emissions standards grow ever tighter. Each and every automaker around is looking for ways to improve both factors. Initially, most have chosen to downsize engines and add turbochargers. That's why Mazda's new Skyactiv-X engines are going to be so special. They essentially work like a diesel engine, using extremely high compression to ignite the fuel rather than the flame from a spark plug. Adding a supercharger rather than a turbo retains a smooth and immediate engine response. Look for a 10 to 30 percent increase in torque and a sizable boost in fuel economy. Mazda's engine already have some of the highest compression ratios around, but these new engines will push well into diesel territory. The biggest issue so far with gasoline compression ignition is controlling when the gasoline ignites. Mazda claims to have solved this issue, seamlessly moving from spark to compression ignition. This new plan comes 10 years after the first Sustainable Zoom-Zoom initiative was announced. With Sustainable Zoom-Zoom 2030, Mazda wants to focus on the Earth, society, and people. Together with the new engines, Mazda hopes to create a sustainable future that still involves engaging and fun-to-drive automobiles. First, Mazda wants to consider emissions over the entire life of a car. That means reducing emissions generated while building the car or fueling and charging a car in addition to those released while it's on the road. The goal is to reduce emissions to 50 percent of 2010 levels by 2030, and a 90 percent reduction by 2050. New electrified models will debut in 2019 in markets that have a high ratio of clean energy for power generation. Mazda's focus on society aims to improve safety with the Mazda Proactive Safety philosophy. Like with Skyactiv, this ethos goes far beyond simply improving an engine or adding new active safety technology.
Half of Chinese car buyers won't shop Japanese over hard feelings
Mon, May 26 2014The hard feelings between China and Japan is no real secret. Besides modern-day disputes, the two countries have had a long-running enmity that dates back to well before the atrocities of World War II. All things considered, then, it shouldn't be a shock that half of Chinese car buyers wouldn't consider a Japanese car. This survey, conducted by Bernstein Research, found that 51 percent of 40,000 Chinese consumers wouldn't even consider a Japanese car – which, again, isn't really surprising, when you consider stories like this. According to Bernstein, the most troubling thing is the location of these sentiments – smaller, growing cities where the population is going to need sets of wheels. We imagine it wouldn't be as big of an issue in traffic-clogged Shanghai or Beijing, but these small cities are going to become a major focus for automakers. "Nationalistic feelings are an impediment. [Japanese] premium brands will struggle," analyst Max Warburton wrote in a research note, according to The Wall Street Journal. Things will improve for Japanese makes, although China will remain a challenge, with Warburton writing, "the one thing that comes out most clearly is that most Chinese really want a German car. While we expect Japanese brands to continue to recover market share this year, ultimately the market will belong to the Germans." There are a few other insights from the study. According to WSJ, Japanese brands are viewed better than Korean brands, and they're seen as more comfortable than the offerings from Germany or the US, despite the fact that everyone in China apparently wants a German car. This is a tough position for the Japanese makes to be in, as there's really not a lot they can do to win favor with Chinese buyers. It will be interesting to see how this plays out, particularly as the importance of the PRC continues to increase year after year.
