Preorders open for the Mazda MX-5 Miata RF Launch Edition

Mon, Sep 26 2016

After unveiling the gorgeous 2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata RF Launch Edition at the 2016 New York International Auto Show, the Japanese automaker announced plans to give loyal customers first dibs on one of the 1,000 models. Preorders are open at 12 PM EST on Monday, September 26th at the Mazda MX-5 RF Launch Edition website. Customers who were sent an invitation with a personalized code will have a limited time to put a $500 refundable deposit down on a limited model. Customers also have the opportunity to select the dealership where they would like to complete the transaction. Pricing for the MX-5 RF has also been announced with the sports car starting at $34,685, including destination and handling. That's roughly $9,000 more than a base MX-5 Miata. Deliveries of the sports car will begin in February 2017. While the MX-5 RF is a looker, $9,000 is a lot of change for the Launch Edition, which only adds a black roof and special badges over the regular MX-5 RF models. All 1,000 Launch Editions will be finished in Machine Gray with a black roof panel and Auburn Nappa leather on the inside. Buyers who opt for the Launch Edition will also get a numbered 42mm Tourneau watch, and can choose between an automatic and a manual transmission. The MX-5 RF Launch Edition should sell out quickly, as the 2015 Mazda MX-5 25th Anniversary Edition sold out in roughly 10 minutes when it went on sale in 2014. Didn't get an invite to preorder the Launch Edition? Worry not, as Mazda will open the special model to the general public on October 3, if there are any left. More powerful 2019 Mazda MX-5 also more efficient

Tue, Jul 10 2018

Bumping the 2019 Mazda MX-5 Miata's power from 155 horses to 181, plus little interior upgrades such as a telescoping steering wheel were more than enough to make the appealing roadster even more so. But there's yet another bonus in store for those that pick up the new Mazda: more efficiency. As initially spotted by industry watcher Bozi Tatarevic, the EPA released fuel economy numbers for the new model, and they're better than the 2018's. And between the automatic and manual versions, the manual sees the biggest increase. Now, these are, very, very minor increases in EPA fuel economy, but any increase is welcome when nothing is lost. The automatic continues to be the most efficient. While the city and highway ratings are unchanged at 26 and 35 mpg respectively, the combined rating increases by 1 mile per gallon to 30. The manual transmission model isn't far behind. City mileage stays the same at 26 mpg, as does the combined rating of 29 mpg. However, highway fuel economy picks up 1 mpg for a total of 34. So to recap, the 2019 Miata retains its good looks, and likely its playful handling and snickety shifter. But it also gets more power, better fuel economy, a better interior, and more options to customize than ever before. This is sounding like it could be the best Miata, yet. We can't wait to try it out. Related Video: Mazda Convertible Performance

Mazda MX-30 coming to the U.S. in electric and rotary forms

Tue, Jan 5 2021

Ever since Mazda revealed its first electric car, the MX-30, and especially after it it announced there would be a range-extended version using a rotary engine, we've had one question: will it come to America? And as you probably noticed in the headline, we finally know that the answer is yes. We're also getting both the electric and rotary versions. The decision was broken by The Detroit Bureau, and spotted by Motor1, in an interview with Mazda North America's president. He confirmed the MX-30's American introduction, and it will eventually be accompanied by a North American-specific hybrid using Toyota technology and built at the new factory in Alabama. The large rear-drive platform that Mazda has been developing will also yield a plug-in hybrid and other electrified variants. We reached out to a Mazda representative who confirmed that the MX-30 EV and rotary plug-in series hybrid would come here. What neither the Mazda president nor the representative could comment on yet was when any MX-30 version would be offered in the U.S. The EV version is slated to go on sale in Japan this month, and in Europe a few months later. Japan already has access to a mild-hybrid version with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder gas engine. The company has previously said it wants to have the rotary model ready for release in Japan in 2022. So we certainly wouldn't expect to see it any sooner in the U.S. But it could be possible for Mazda to release a regular EV version a little earlier. Related Video:
