Mazda FD RX7 Production Numbers

This makes it much rarer that the Touring and R1 models, not to mention this car is the lightest of the RX-7 models, at 2315 lbs. It has a better HP-per-tonne rating than many performance cars, such as the 350Z, R32 Skyline GTR, and a few Lamborghinis.

BHP Per Tonne List

From Wikipedia:
The FD RX-7 was Motor Trend's Import Car of the Year. When Playboy first reviewed the FD RX-7 in 1993, they tested it in the same issue as the [then] new Dodge Viper. In that issue, Playboy declared the RX-7 to be the better of the two cars. It went on to win Playboy's Car of the Year for 1993. The FD RX-7 also made Car and Driver's Ten Best list for 1993 through 1995, for every year in which it was sold state-side. June 2007 Road & Track proclaimed "The ace in Mazda's sleeve is the RX-7, a car once touted as the purest, most exhilarating sports car in the world."

The Car's History:

This car was built in May of 1992, which makes it a very early model to be sold, and very likely one of the first batches to be transported to the US. It was registered in 1993 in Miami Beach, FL. It stayed in Florida until 2001, at which point it was transported to New Jersey and subsequently garaged for most of its life. The car has had small fender bender in 2001, but fixed with original Mazda parts and had a $2200 full body respray with the OEM Vintage Red. (receipt included). The engine was also overhauled with upgraded ALS seals, along with all gaskets 15,000 miles ago. The car has been inactive for a few years until recently, but the engine has been inspected thoroughly and given a clean bill of health. The title is free and clear in the state of NJ. It has an above average AutoCheck score of 49, and it's a 3 owner car.

Engine/Drivetrain:

The engine underwent a complete overhaul with new, upgraded ALS seals and all gaskets 15,000 miles ago. The engine currently has a new Walbro 255LPH fuel pump ($120), new NGK leading and trailing spark plugs ($50), a complete oil flush cycle and change with Castrol GTX High Performance Conventional Motor Oil and Fram Filter ($75). All fluids were drained and changed. Engine starts up with no hesitation in any condition, with no smoke at startup or any time during driving. There is no hesitation at any point in the rev range, and the idle is at 8-900 at normal operating temperature. There are no leaks of any kind coming from the engine or transmission. The alternator was replaced with a good used OEM unit ($130). There are NO performance modifications on this car. It is completely stock. Clutch fluid was bled and pedal grabs nicely and engages smoothly. The electric fans were rewired to turn on with the ignition, therefore helping the engine stay cool, rather than rely on the coolant temp sensor, which is known to be faulty in these cars. This engine has never overheated or run low on any fluid. There are no engine trouble codes stored.

Exhaust:

The exhaust is stock, complete with cats and precats. There are no issues with any of it. No leaks. This car has never failed any emissions inspection.

Brakes:

The brakes are upgraded to StopTech Powerslot Rotors and Pads ($479) The calipers were cosmetically reconditioned and tested for mechanical functionality, and passed with no issues. The brake fluid was flushed with fresh DOT3 fluid. The brakes need to go through their break-in period, and therefore make a bit of noise when driving slowly. There are no functional issues.

Tires/Alignment:

All 4 tires have been replaced with good used 225/50/16 units with 70% tread, but they are different manufacturers. There are 2 Goodyear LS tires, 1 Riken, and 1 Firestone. There is no camber wear or alignment issues. Car tracks straight and true.

Wheels:

The wheels are stock 16" super light aluminum alloy. They weigh about 15 lbs each, and they are in good condition, save for minor curb rash and dings on 2 of the rims. Not very noticeable, but easily fixable at any tire shop. No cracks or bends in any of the rims.

Exterior:

The car's paint looks good, but has a few minor issues. There is a 1.5" paint crack near the rear spoiler on the driver's side, and there are a few spots of bubbling and sanding marks where it looks like the previous owner tried to wetsand the car. The car needs a good buff and wax by a professional detailer to look completely factory fresh. There is a 3" dent on the passenger's side quarter panel, that does not have any paint damage. It can be repaired by any paintless dent repair facility or body shop without having to do any intrusive or labor intensive work. There are small scratches and dings all around the car, but they don't detract from the look of the car. The overall cosmetic quality of the car is very good, and it receives countless compliments daily. This was a Florida car for most of its life, and is subsequently rust-free.

Interior:

The interior of the car is tan on black. The carpets have been steam cleaned and are very clean. OEM tan floor mats are included, but the driver's side floor mat has a 2" worn section. Otherwise clean. 2005 RX8 black leather sport seats have been installed ($520) with custom welded rails ($120). The leather quality is much higher than the stock RX7 seat, and the bolster of the seat is much more robust, which helps keep you in the seat when cornering. The driver's seat has full power controls. The interior trim had to be cut back to accommodate the wider seat, but everything works without issue. Stock seat belts work perfectly. The rear deck carpet is clean, with a space saver spare underneath, and all jacks/wheel locks stowed away in their compartments. There is no rust on the interior of the car and no signs of water seepage.

There is an aftermarket NRG Carbon Fiber weighted shift knob with 5-speed shift pattern on it ($40) The stock shift knob is also included with the car.

The gauge cluster works well, with all gauges showing accurate readings, with no lights out. The odometer LCD has bled and is unreadable. It went out at approximately 136490. The speedometer, however, works with no issues.

The interior trim plastics on this car were very fragile and have cracked over time. They were repaired and reinforced using ABS Plastic Weld and now are much stronger. The center console trim was polished to a glossy shine. The ashtray is broken on its left side, but still functions as it should, with the LED intact. The driver's side door trim is missing its armrest cover, but has no other issues. The headliner, door panels and dash are all in perfect condition along with the rear storage bins and hatchback divider.

The trunk lock of this car does not open with the key, but it can be popped from the inside. The exterior door handles of this car are in great condition and work beautifully.

Audio/Electronics:

The headunit in this car is a JVC KD-LH300 ($200). It has a multi-color display that is perfectly matched to the RX7's interior lights. It also has a Line-In/Aux input that has been routed through the glovebox with 16 feet of cable. The front speakers are Logic ZX650 3 way speakers that provide amazing all around performance. The rear speakers are Kenwood KFC-578C 2-way speakers that provide a great ambiance and support the front soundstage. An amazing setup for such a small car.

All stock electronics and features work in the car with no problem, including all clearance lights and light motors.

Heating/Air Conditioning:

The heating works well with no issue. The AC needs to be recharged with R12 or converted to R134. The car comes with 2 12oz. unopened cans of R12 that you can use to refill the system. All vents work as they should, along with defrost and defogger options.

Drivability:

This car is a rocketship. It has a very linear powerband and pulls you into your seat in any gear. It's what sports cars today can only dream of being. It handles as if attached to the ground by magnets and its 50/50 weight distribution means that it will always be predictable with its oversteer if you do get overzealous. The turbo whistle is amazing at full throttle and can only be experienced to be truly appreciated. It's one of the best, if not the best car I've ever driven. It's the most complete driving experience one can have, and especially at this price point. The only reason I'm selling it is that I want to put a down payment on a house.

The winning bidder has 24 hours to pay a $500 deposit through PayPal, and the rest via cash, PayPal, cashier's check or money order. Shipping can be done at buyer's expense. Happy Bidding!

Mazda Skyactiv-X Review | The revolution begins with a squeeze-bang

Fri, Jan 26 2018

The matte black Skyactiv-X prototype looks like a rough Mazda3, perhaps reconstructed after a bad wreck by an over-enthusiastic owner of a spot welder and lots of gaffers' tape. Ribbed ducts poke out of the dash sending two breaths of conditioned air to no one in particular. Even its revolutionary engine, the thing we're here to experience, is entombed in a massive, nondescript cover to mask its unseemly noises. It's a wild, strange way to meet a very unconventional vehicle that promises diesel-like fuel economy, a wide torque band, and an exotic method for burning less gas than ever before. It takes a few hours for Mazda's engineers to explain the fundamental principles of operation. For more detail, read our Skyactiv-X Spark Controlled Compression Ignition explainer, but here's a very brief overview. Skyactiv-X marries some traditional gasoline engine characteristics with a novel form of compression ignition called SPCCI. The key for Skyactiv-X is to use very high compression in the cylinder and an extremely lean fuel-air mixture. Squeezed right to the cusp of getting hot enough to blow up all on its own (which is very hard to predict), a squirt of extra gas and a spark interject to cross that compression-ignition threshold in a controlled and predictable manner. See the animation below: That takes a few essential components to get just right. One is a massive amount of computer processing power and some pressure sensors in the individual cylinders, because the ambient conditions change how and when these things happen. Skyactiv-X uses a clutched supercharger to pump in additional air when needed to nail the mixture precisely, and high-pressure injectors to get the low ratios of fuel to disperse properly in the chamber. And since it operates like a conventional gasoline engine sometimes, it uses valve timing to lower the very high compression ratio so it doesn't reach combustion ignition in that mode. In practice, the Skyactiv-X runs in compression ignition mode most of the time. In practical terms, that means it drives like a torquey gasoline Skyactiv engine. The torque curve is broad and flat — diesel-like in that respect. That also means it can get away with using a six-speed transmission and a lower final drive for better response. There's enough grunt and economy together that Mazda can let the engine spin faster — at 60 mph, it's running at roughly 1,000 more RPM than a similar gas engine, with greater efficiency.

Mazdaspeed3 concept tipped for Frankfurt debut

Tue, Apr 28 2015

The last quarter of 2015 could be a big one for Mazda as a report has emerged from Australia claiming that the company will come to the Frankfurt Motor Show in September with a near-production concept of the third-generation Mazdaspeed3, while a second-generation CX-9 will be shown a few months later in Los Angeles. Motoring.com.au ran the initial report, and although the news seems plausible, the outlet doesn't provide sources for either piece of news. Likewise, our friends at Mazda USA refused to comment on "speculation." Speculation it may be, but it's surely tantalizing considering the recent popularity of both the hot hatch and three-row crossover segments. According to the Aussies, the concept Speed3 will quickly evolve into a production model, which will launch alongside a mid-cycle refresh for the current 3. A turbocharged 2.5-liter will spit out 295 horsepower, and could have all-wheel drive. Even if only the front axle is doing the work, the MS3 will easily be able to stand toe-to-toe with hotter half of the segment based on output alone. As for the more mundane offerings, Motoring reports the long-in-the-tooth CX-9 will get a replacement in LA, although it doesn't offer much in the way of details beyond that. It should be interesting to see how the company's Skyactiv philosophy will be implemented on such a large vehicle. Perhaps the biggest surprise from the Australian report, though, are the outlet's reports on the CX-7, which will return sporting a third row of seats after its larger sibling debuts. That'd give Mazda a versatile lineup of four crossovers, with the sub-compact CX-3, the compact CX-5, the midsize, seven-passenger CX-7 and the fullsize CX-9. As we weren't able to confirm any of this with Mazda, we'd still warn that this news should be ingested with grains of salt. Still, it looks like the company could be set to make some waves in the first two shows of the upcoming auto show season.

2014 Mazda6 Skyactiv-D Wagon

Thu, 21 Feb 2013

This was sort of a quirky surprise drive opportunity. I've been over here in Italy for a while now, and Mazda Italia contacted me seemingly out of the blue to drive test some version of the Mazda6 with a diesel engine. Supremo. The Mazda6 is a sexy everyday beast and I have been digging their SkyActiv-D engines for a while now. Very spirited units.
My contact phones me the day of, and says he can come by with the car, and then we'll head off to some sort of special spot for dynamics testing and technical conversation. Nice deal, say I.
My guy Ernesto pulls up outside of the house and - lo and behold - it's a dang Mazda6 station wagon with the very most recent 2.2-liter SkyActiv-D motor good for 148 horsepower and healthy 280 pound-feet of torque. The wee four-banger with 14.0:1 compression ratio hauls this 3,260-pound wagon around with the best of them. A decent 0-to-60-mph time of 8.7 seconds, too.
