CONS

  • Windshield Crack
  • A/C Blows, but not Cold.  Likely needs recharging as it has never been done in 20 years.
  • Original paint.  Looks great but as the standard rock chips, 2-3 small door dings (its an aluminum car) and the mirrors/spoilers fade if not polished regularly (a common problem for the red RX7s)

This car is awesome!  Always garage kept, 1 family owership, NEVER raced, and NEVER wrecked!  It is super fast and turns heads everywhere it goes.  "What kind of car is that?" & "Is that a Ferrari?" are a few of the comments I get.  Nobody who knows what this car is capable of won't even look at you at a red light!  If you know anything about Japanese sports cars, this is THE car to own.  Not even Supras, Sklyines, and NSXs can compare to this car.

So what makes the R1 a better buy than any other RX7?

  1. It is the stripped down race version of the RX7.  No fancy stereo system or sunroof to add weight.  Who needs that crap in a race car???
  2. It came from the factory with a functional front chin spoiler, rear spoiler, and aluminum hood.  Again, strip the weight and get some downforce for high speeds.  Ask anyone who has taken a Touring Edition to 120+ MPH, it gets really squirrelly!  The R1 sticks to the ground like rubber shoe soles on ahot Texas summ day!
  3. Rarity, rarity, rarity!  Only 1177 Red R1's built, 1665 total.  Less than half are on the road today.  And maybe 25% of those are not ragged out, torn up, or non-functionally modded out (riced out).  This is one of them!
  4. It is the fastest production car built in 1993.  Truest 50/50 weight ratio around, suspension to handle the harshest road race courses, and so much power that it could melt you into the seat when you mash the pedal.

This car is a MUST-HAVE for any serious collector!

**There is an interesting story attached to this car. My father bought it brand new in 1994.  The story is that THIS car was used by magazines to test drive. Now, I was never able to find any supporting documents, but if you look at the history of the car, it has an odd anamoly. The date of manufacture is 10/11/1993, which make this one of the last (if not THE last) R1's to roll off the assembly line. The next entry after production shows this car at auction somewhere in the Pacific Southwest. My father purchased the car from Fred Haas Mazda in Houston, TX in mid-1994.    Now, I cannot confirm nor deny any of what I have just disclosed other than what the report says.  My father passed away 10 years ago so the facts of what the story is went with him.**

Jay Leno brings a rotary-powered VW Beetle to the garage

Mon, Aug 1 2016

It takes something really unique or inventive to pique Jay Leno's interest. His show, Jay Leno's Garage, has featured everything from concours-worthy classics to completely custom, home-built machinery. How do you get Leno to feature one of more than 20 million Beetles on his program? Stick a turbocharged rotary engine under the hood. The Beetle's owner, Mario Markakis, swapped the car's stock flat four-cylinder for the Wankel engine from a 1990 Mazda RX-7 Series 5 Turbo. The engine's 250 horsepower are fed through a reinforced version of the Beetle's stock four-speed transmission. That's about five times the original engine's output. It works well, with the car putting down some impressive times at the drag strip. Markakis did most of the work to the Beetle in his garage. In addition to the engine swap, he's modified the car's brakes, suspension, and interior. Check out the video to hear all the details of this custom Wankel-powered Volkswagen. Mazda LM55 Vision Gran Turismo reshapes a winning form [w/video]

Fri, Dec 26 2014

In the history of endurance racing, there's only ever been one Japanese automaker to win the famous 24 Hours of Le Mans, and as you might have guessed, that was Mazda in 1991 with the 787B – which was, incidentally, the only one ever to win the race under rotary power, or really anything other than a conventional piston engine. That racing success is something Mazda can be proud about, even over two decades later, and it's a badge of honor the automaker is revisiting with the LM55 prototype you see here. Only instead of unleashing it on the Circuit de la Sarthe – or really any actual race track – the Mazda LM55 Vision Gran Turismo is bound only for PlayStation. The latest addition to the Vision Gran Turismo lineup, the LM55 takes inspiration from the aforementioned 787B but gives it a modern KODO design theme. The result is pretty stunning, taking a more radical approach than the Skyactiv Prototype the company is fielding in the United SportsCar Championship or even the dearly departed, head-turning Furai concept. But unlike that diesel prototype and the Wankel-powered 787B, Mazda hasn't specified any kind of novel powertrain for the LM55, fictitious or otherwise - saying only that it has "advanced drive train technology that offers the epitome of power, efficiency and durability and the result is an exceptional power to weight ratio exceeding that of most cars in its class." Just what that class would be we'll likely never find out, but if you don't have a PS3 loaded with GT6 (or, for that matter, even if you do), you can scope out the virtual action in the slideshow above and the rather Christmas-y video below.
