This is my 1988 Mazda RX-7 GXL 5-speed coupe with 60,342 original miles. This has got to be one of the cleanest, most-original, best-condition 2nd-generation RX-7 models for sale in the country. Not many of these cars exist with such low miles, original paint and in superb mechanical condition- this car is outstandingly nice. This car has the following equipment and options:
I have the original books, manuals and dealer brochures with the car as well as two keys. This car is in exceptional condition for its age. This car hasn't been modified, hacked up or molested in any way. This is a completely stock, original-condition car that runs and drives perfectly. I would trust this car to drive across the country if someone wanted to. The paint and body of this car are in quite good condition for a 1988 vehicle. The paint is original, and the car hasn't been in any known accidents. The paint looks superb for it's age, with excellent gloss and very few stone nicks and no major problems. The body is clean and very nice. The aluminum wheels are in very good condition, the glass is all good and the tires are nearly brand new. The interior of this RX-7 is very well-preserved and in great condition. The seats, upholstery and carpets are original and they are clean and aren't ripped up or worn out. The seat fabric is very nice and the carpets and even the factory "RX-7" floormats look nice. All of the switchgear, buttons and interior hardware are clean and aren't worn out and nothing is missing or broken. All the interior buttons and switches are working, as well as all of the gauges. The warning lights on the dashboard and gauge cluster are all working properly when the key is turned forward, and they all properly go out when the car is started. This RX-7 runs and drives beautifully. This is a tight, stable, nimble and fun-to-drive car that drives exactly how you would expect a 60,000 mile car to drive. The rotary engine starts perfectly and it doesn't smoke or leak, and it makes plenty of power. The engine doesn't burn oil nor coolant nor does it smoke even under full throttle. The engine revs to 2800 rpm when starting just as it should, and then settles down into a smooth idle. The transmission shifts well and the clutch is strong. The steering is tight, and the handling is excellent. The brakes are smooth and powerful and they stop the car very well. This is a super-driving, rewarding, fun car that runs and drives just as it should. I know of no mechanical or electrical problems, and everything is working- the air conditioning, the factory radio and EQ, the power locks and windows, the front and rear windshield wipers, the trunk hatch release, the sunroof, the headlight motors, etc, etc. This is a 1988 car and as such it is not a brand-new car. Here is a complete list of everything I know of wrong with the car, no matter how minor: you have to help the sunroof up when opening it- just push up gently while holding the button- after that the motors power it back just fine and it closes just fine. There are many dings on the sides of the car, mostly above the beltline and more on the passenger side- this is what I'd call "garage wear". These dings could of course be fixed but then the car wouldn't have original paint- that's why I've elected to leave them alone- the new owner may feel differently. There is a small split in the vinyl side panel of the outside of the driver's seat- you can see this clearly in the photo. There is some paint checking on the driver's side. There is a tiny bit of surface rust due to some stone nicks on the inside lip of the right rear wheel well that has been brush-touched (otherwise the car is rust-free). You can't rush the 1-2 shift under very high rpms, you need to shift relatively slowly- under normal lower-rpm driving there is no issue at all. There is a defroster vent at the left corner of the dash that is missing its louvers. One "Mazda" center cap is missing from the aluminum wheels. That's it. This is a super clean, beautiful condition RX-7 for the age. This car is kept in my climate-controlled garage in Willoughby, OH. You can fly in to Cleveland (CLE) and drive this car home if you wish. J.D. Power dependability survey is out, but you shouldn't depend on it
Wed, Feb 14 2018J.D. Power has just released its latest automotive dependability survey, which of course has usual suspects Buick and Lexus ranking high. Those are safe and solid findings, surely. But when you look a little closer, there are curiosities. Our Consumer Editor, Jeremy Korzeniewski, offered an explanation a couple of years back for why this survey should be viewed with a degree of skepticism, and his take is worth a re-read. What jumped out at Jeremy were the relatively low spots assigned to Mazda, Subaru and Scion among the ranking of makes. Back in 2016 when he wrote his piece, they were ranked 21st, 23rd and 24th respectively. In this year's survey, Mazda ranks 15th and Subaru 26th, both below the industry average of 142 reported problems per 100 vehicles. (And Scion, of course, is in car-brand heaven.) Now, part of what is going on here is surely the fact that all automotive brands are producing dependable vehicles compared with years gone by, so the degree of variance between the best and worst on the list is not as great as it once was. "For the most part, automotive manufacturers continue to meet consumers' vehicle dependability expectations," Dave Sargent, a J.D. Power vice president, said in a statement. "A 9 percent improvement is extremely impressive, and vehicle dependability is, without question, at its best level ever." That said, when a brand like Subaru, regarded by many as mechanically bulletproof, ranks 26th, it leaves people who know cars scratching their heads. Something there does not compute. The problem, as Jeremy pointed out, is one of methodology: When he wrote his piece, there was no weighting assigned to the problems reported in the survey. And that still appears to be the case. Therefore, a problem with an infotainment system or a loose piece of trim is deemed as serious as a blown engine or leaky transmission. (And yes, infotainment is still the biggest problem across the board.) Jeremy's point: If the categories of problems were weighted, you'd see a different picture. When you look at the Consumer Reports brand rankings (subscription required), you get a very different picture. in CR's rankings, Subaru is No. 6 among brands, which, well, sounds a lot more like it. CR singles out the redesigned 2017 Impreza as a car with some new-model problems. (The BRZ had the fewest.) The two surveys jibe a little more closely when it comes to Mazda, which CR ranks 12th, a drop of six places from previous-year rankings.
Wards names its 2015 10 Best Interiors list
Fri, Apr 17 2015Wards Automotive has named the winners of its 10 Best Interior awards, covering a wide but affordable array of vehicles. Where last year's list contained two six-figure vehicles, including the $372,800 Rolls-Royce Wraith, this year's is, well, a whole lot more reasonable. The publication lists the Mercedes-Benz C400 at $65,000 (which seems off), making it the most expensive vehicle here. That said, we'd argue that the entire C-Class line deserves to make this year's list, owing to its varied and high-quality selection of materials. The other vehicle to break the $60,000 mark, meanwhile, is the $60,675 Ford F-150 King Ranch, which has 327,000 pounds of leather lining its interior. Only one other German car, the BMW i3, and one other pickup truck, the GMC Canyon, managed to make this year's list. Will Mazda sell diesel hybrids in Japan in 2016?
Thu, Aug 14 2014Could the "Zoom Zoom" automaker start making hybrids that go "glug glug glug"? Mazda, known for its fuel-efficient Skyactiv engine line, will be the first Japanese automaker to make a diesel-hybrid vehicle for Japan and Europe. According to the Yomiuri Shimbun, Mazda may start making its oil-burning hybrids as soon as 2016, and the powertrain may reach fuel efficiency levels of as much as 95 miles per gallon (one the more lenient Japanese driving cycle). That'd make such a vehicle line about 30 percent more fuel-efficient than standard diesels and about eight percent more fuel efficient that the Toyota Prius C compact hybrid (known as the Aqua in Japan). Mazda has been dismissive of hybrid and electric powertrains, instead focusing on Skyactiv technology to maximize fuel efficiency from conventional gas-powered engines. Diesel powertrains account for about half of the light-duty vehicles sold in Europe each year, while Japan's diesel sales of 76,000 vehicles last year were about three times as many as were sold there in 2012. In January, Mazda said that it would delay the introduction of its Skyactiv-D diesel engine from what was to be a spring 2014 debut. The reason was to fine-tune the engine's performance/fuel economy balance. Mazda representatives didn't immediately respond to a request for comment from AutoblogGreen about the diesel hybrids.
