This is my 1984 Mazda RX-7 which is a one-family-owned car since new. This is of the better-preserved examples of the first generation RX-7 you will find for sale. This is an original, unmodified and unmolested car that has never been abused or mistreated. This car has always been garaged and was not driven in winter. This car was purchased new in 1984 by Ms. Patricia Soya in Illinois. She kept the car in excellent condition throughout her ownership and sold it to her brother James in 1991 when the car had 69,000 miles. During its lifetime, the car has always been garaged and it has been used for summertime driving only. This car has never been sitting for any length of time- it has been driven regularly on nice days for the past 30 years. I have the original window sticker which shows the purchase price of $12,765.00 in 1984. This car has been in the same family since 1984 when it was new. Since new, this RX-7 has always been serviced and maintained and kept in good operating condition. This is one of the most fun sports cars ever built. It is a light, nimble RWD sports car with perfect balance and excellent power. It has a slick-shifting transmission, nicely weighted non-power steering, good brakes and an excellent chassis. This car is true classic- it is one of the most innovative automobile designs of the 1980's and one of the finest Japanese sports cars ever designed. This is a superb driver's car. The car is light, quick and responsive. The Wankel rotary engine is ultra-smooth, with excellent power delivery and an intoxicating sound. The 5-speed transmission is crisp and tight in shifting. The suspension is tight and responsive and the car has superb balance due to the engine placement behind the front axle. The brakes are excellent. The overall driving experience is outstanding- these cars have a reputation as pure enthusiast's cars and they deserve it. This RX-7 starts and runs very well. To start the car, you pull out the choke, and the motor starts perfectly every time. The choke automatically releases when the engine has warmed up sufficiently. The engine does not smoke or run rough. The motor makes very good power and it is smooth and quiet. This car is a blast to drive. The rotary engine is butter-smooth and makes excellent power. The clutch is strong and the transmission shifts perfectly. The steering is responsive and the brakes and handling are excellent. This car has no known mechanical problems and there are no warning lights illuminated. This is a reliable, dependable sports car with no known issues. I know of no reason this car couldn't make a long drive anywhere. The body is straight, solid and clean with no exterior body panel rust. The underside and body are totally solid and in excellent condition. The paint is clean and looks very good for the age. The paint carries a nice gloss and looks very nice. The exterior and body of this RX-7 are what I'd consider to be excellent for the age. The interior of this RX-7 is in beautiful condition. The carpets are clean and have been protected by the original factory floormats since the very first day the car was purchased. The floormats were only removed for the photos. The seat fabric and upholstery is excellent and looks great. The dash is clean and in good shape. This interior is very clean and in excellent condition- much nicer than you would ever expect for a 1984 car. This RX-7 is somewhat rare in that it was sold new without air conditioning. 30 years later, this makes for a lighter, less complex car without an A/C system that would be unlikely to work anyway. Included with the car is the owner's manual, original window sticker, the original body-color steel roof in its vinyl bag plus a fitted front bra. This car is 30 years old and as such it is not brand new. Please expect normal issues of wear and tear consistent with the age of the car. Here is a list of all known issues: There are various small nicks, stone chips, minor scratches and other minor exterior defects, some of which have been brush-touched to improve the appearance. There is some minor corrosion on the aluminum wheels. The paint on the hood and tops of the fenders is more sun-faded and dull; the rest of the paint is glossy and in very good shape. The original factory radio doesn't work. There is a ding in the front left fender behind the bumper. The fuel gauge does not work, however the car will have a full tank of gas at pickup. This car is kept in my garage in Willoughby, OH. You can fly in to Cleveland (CLE) and drive this car home. Sorry, rotary fans, Mazda's RX Vision probably won't happen
Tue, May 24 2016Mazda is doing a lot of things the right way in this age of beige-ness. It just crammed a turbocharged inline-four into the improved CX-9, a bold move unto itself, and one that should also be heartening for Mazdaspeed fans. Wouldn't that engine make for a swell Mazdaspeed3 or Mazdaspeed6? There's a reasonable ray of hope there, but not necessarily a guarantee. The RX Vision, though, is a pipe dream. Mazda is smart to keep the rotary dream alive. It's smart to keep developing it in back rooms and to keep the idea on the public's mind. Credit where credit's due: Mazda has solved some of the stickiest issues the rotary engine has, through savvy engineering and perseverance. We've seen promising patent filings for the Skyactiv-R engine, which is supposed to be found in the RX Vision concept. Mazda uses every opportunity to remind us that development is continuing and that the company would love to bring a rotary-powered sportscar to production. I believe it. But the RX Vision is just a design study. And there are some harsh realities about rotary engine emissions and fuel economy standards that are difficult for modern piston engines to achieve without expensive componentry. Emissions and fuel economy are both bugbears of the rotary, in case you've forgotten. And that explains Mazda's interest in running rotaries on hydrogen, but down that road lie infrastructure challenges as daunting as making a gasoline-powered rotary burn as clean as one of Mazda's Skyactiv piston engines. All this is meant to put Mazda's recent comments to Top Gear in context. Mazda's design director, Kevin Rice, spoke to TG at the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa D'Este, and was waving Mazda's rotary flag quite enthusiastically. "In the back rooms at Mazda, we're still developing it," Rice said, "and when the world's ready to buy another rotary, we'll be ready to provide it." I'd like that to be a comforting statement, but given the realities of fuel economy and emissions regulations and Mazda's position in the market, it seems like a hollow platitude. "When the world's ready" is just another way of saying "when we solve the fundamental issues with this engine layout, and there's an unambiguous market study that shows we can build these cars and make a profit, we'll consider it." That seems like a lot of "ifs". Perhaps Mazda does have a clean-burning, efficient, cheap-to-produce rotary running on an engine dyno in Hiroshima, and it's prepping an RX-9 for the next auto show.
More head-up displays are coming to a dashboard near you
Tue, Feb 27 2018With the exception of Apple products — $1,000 for a freakin' smartphone? — one great thing about tech is you typically get more for your money with each passing year. This is particularly true with automotive tech: Features like driver assists and surround-view cameras that were once exclusively available in luxury vehicles now come standard even on some economy cars. The same thing is slowly happening with head-up displays (HUD). For example, the 10-inch HUD in the 2018 Toyota Camry is one of the largest and best HUDs I've seen in any car. And a big improvement on the much smaller HUD in the latest Toyota Prius. Mazda is another mainstream brand that offers HUDs in several of its vehicles. But instead of embedding expensive components in the dash and using a special windshield, the HUDs in the Mazda3 and Mazda6 use a thin plastic lens that folds down when not in use. MINI has a similar solution, but this low-cost approach has limits in terms of size and position of the images compared to traditional HUDs that use the windshield as a screen. We're also starting to see similar lens-based aftermarket options that can be added to any car. Last year I tested a portable HUD called Navdy that taps into a car's OBD-II port to provide info on speed and RPM and uses built-in GPS and Google Maps to show the surrounding area, display speed limits and route you to your destination. Navdy also connects to an Android or iOS smartphone via Bluetooth to display data from phone calls, texts and music playing on a connected device, and it's simple to use and easily visible in almost any lighting condition. While Navdy is still available online, late last year the company ran into financial difficulties, and product support has been halted. I recently tested a new portable HUD called Hudly that's not quite fully baked and falls short of Navdy because it doesn't tap into an OBD-II port. Since a companion smartphone app for Hudly isn't scheduled to launch until next month, for now it only mirrors what's on a smartphone. So it can be used for nav and other apps, and its features are very limited. Between automakers adding HUDs in more reasonably priced cars and the aftermarket filling in the gaps for existing vehicle owners with add-ons, the technology is becoming more prevalent and affordable. And it's also getting better.
Mitsuoka Rock Star is a Miata in a Chevy Corvette Sting Ray disguise
Wed, Oct 10 2018Mitsuoka is a famous (infamous?) Japanese custom car builder known for its absurd, and occasionally out-of-this-world vehicles. Its most iconic vehicle was the mid-engine Orochi, but its bread and butter are normal Japanese cars given front and rear styling from the past, usually sometime between the 1930s and 1950s. One of the more recent examples is the Mitsuoka Himiko, a Mazda Miata given a classic European roadster look. But the company has ventured a little further ahead in history with its latest model, the Mitsuoka Rock Star, which quite clearly is meant to be a C2 Chevy Corvette Sting Ray. The effect is actually pretty convincing, and as far as Mitusokas go, it looks smartly proportioned and a good fit for the base car. That base car is the current Mazda Miata, known as Roadster in Japan. It probably helps that the base Miata was designed with exaggerated fenders and creases from the get-go, so the even more exaggerated lines of the Corvette fit surprisingly well. Outside of the body, the car is pretty much identical to a regular Miata. It uses the same naturally aspirated 1.5-liter four-cylinder as all overseas examples. That means it makes just 129 horsepower and 111 pound-feet of torque, so this doesn't even come close to the fire-breathing power of real C2 Corvettes. Of course, that could be rectified with an LS V8 swap from Flyin' Miata. The engine is coupled to either a six-speed manual transmission or an automatic. The manual can also be had with a limited-slip differential. There are a number of available upgrades including custom colors for the body and the windshield surround. You can also add a custom leather interior with body-color coordinated panels. Mitsuoka will even provide retro-style wheels with white-letter BF Goodrich tires for the complete look. If you live in Japan and find this vehicle appealing, you'd better be ready to shell out plenty of cash. At current exchange rates, the base Rock Star starts at $41,636. The price goes up from there with options. In contrast, a base Mazda Miata here in the U.S. starts at $26,625, a little more than half that of the Mitsuoka. And of course, the U.S.-spec Miata is substantially more powerful. If you want the Mitsuoka, you'll also have to get in touch with the company quickly.
