2016 Mazda2 won't come to the US

Mon, May 25 2015

Hoping to get your hands on the new Mazda2? Don't get your hopes up too high, because the latest word has it that the new hatchback won't be available in the United States. According to the report from Automotive News, Mazda's US office has decided against bringing the new Mazda2 to American showrooms. This despite it being made just south of the border in Salamanca, Mexico. The reasons are apparently two-fold. For starters, Mazda sales offices around the world have been clamoring for larger allotments of the new 2, and the company can only supply so many. "We could have had it, but we would have had a number that didn't make much sense with 600 dealers and with the marketing it takes to launch a new car," Robert Davis, Mazda's senior VP of US sales operations, told AN. For another, Mazda is apparently not convinced the new supermini would resonate with US buyers, who are increasingly migrating towards crossovers. So Mazda is focusing instead on "products that make us and our dealers considerably more profit than a Mazda2 does." That doesn't mean the latest Mazda2 will be entirely out of our reach forever, though. The company's agreement with Toyota will see a sedan version sold in the US as the Scion iA. Mazda is also certifying it to US safety and environmental standards so that it can sell the 2 in Puerto Rico, which means that it wouldn't take much to change course and bring the hatchback into the US in the future: "It'll always be there if we need it," Davis told AN. Reached for comment, a spokesman for Mazda's North American operations told Autoblog that "The Mazda2 launch in the U.S. market is on hold in order to evaluate the B-Car segment and enable us the opportunity to focus on the launches of the refreshed Mazda6 and CX-5, and the all-new MX-5 roadster and CX-3 subcompact crossover SUV." That leaves the aforementioned CX-3 - which is, incidentally, based on the same architecture as the Mazda2 - as the smallest mainstream model that Mazda will offer Stateside.

Updated Mazda6 Wagon to look lovely in Geneva

Tue, Feb 6 2018

For the 2018 model year, Mazda updated the Mazda6 sedan with some design and mechanical tweaks. It will take the stand for its European debut at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show. There, it will be staged alongside the Mazda6 Wagon, which will be getting its own global debut at the Swiss expo. Unless there's some sort of miracle, we won't be getting the five-door version here in the United States, which is a shame, because it's a beautiful wagon. Customers here — apart from a handful of die-hard fans and, perhaps, the entirety of the American automotive press — prefer something with a bit more elevation to it. Ask a Mazda dealer in Michigan or Arizona for a Mazda6 Wagon, and they'll probably try to sell you a CX-5 instead. That frustrates the wagon fans. "It's gorgeous," said Autoblog Associate Editor Joel Stocksdale. "It kills me that we don't get it." The Mazda6 Wagon, like the new sedan, features an updated exterior and interior design, new seating, better performance, and improved driving dynamics. The Mazda6 Wagon will be on the show floor with a number of other beautiful cars, including the Mazda Kai and Vision Coupe concepts, which bowed at the Tokyo show. Mazda will also showcase its new gasoline-powered Skyactiv-X spark controlled compression ignition, which we were recently able to test in a prototype vehicle. Mazda3 versus BMW 1 Series and Audi A3 in Euro diesel showdown

Sun, Dec 21 2014

It's not exactly a Tesla Model S taking on a Ferrari, but for us green enthusiasts, a drag race and comparison between reasonably priced diesel hatchbacks does hold interest, and UK's Auto Express was kind enough to do the deed. When raced, the diesels actually laid a little rubber coming off the line, though the track was covered in rain. Did we mention it was in the UK? The comparison was between diesel hatchbacks priced at less than 22,000 British pounds (about $34,500 US), and Auto Express pitted a Mazda3, a BMW 1-Series and an Audi A3 against each other. The results are revealed in the 11-minute video you can watch below. In short, one car smoked the others. In order to set the tone, you should know that the Mazda's 150 horsepower is about 35 more than the other two entrants. The Mazda also earned points for its quiet motor (it sounds more like a petrol engine, the host says), standard equipment that would add about $4,000 to the other two cars if included and relative roominess in front and in back. The Audi gained points for its storage space, while the BMW had the only rear-wheel-drive car in the hunt. See for yourself how the competition stacks up.
