Selling my baby to a good home.  I dearly love this car and the gas mileage to-boot.  It’s like having a road legal go-cart.  It hugs the road around corners and is super fun to drive. Garaged all of its life and never seen snow (not driven in winter) until last year in IL.  You will not be disappointed in this car – but remember, it is 11- years old so both interior and exterior are a bit worn.  On a scale of 1 – 10, this car is a solid 9+ mechanically; interior is an 7.5 to 8; exterior (just because of worn paint, 1 crazed headlight (passenger side- no cracks) and small scratches/dings 6.5 to 7.5.

148,xxx miles.  VIN JM1NB353830300331.  Paint color: garent red mica(Mazda code 25F) with pin stripes down side, plastic door trim.  LaBra (lower grill, upper hood).  Interior: combo black/red cloth seats with custom black/red leather seat covers + steering wheel cover.  Convertible roof with glass rear window/rear window defroster.  New aftermarket JVC radio/CD player with remote with power antenna. No power seats or cruise control.  5 speed manual transmission shifts like new; clutch tight, short shift – no play.  Mechanically, this car is in excellent condition – 4 newer tires, new head gasket, new brakes/rotors.  Gets 32-34 miles to gallon Hwy/28 town.  Air conditioning and heater work in excellent fashion as well as front/rear defroster.  Steering is tight with good shocks/struts.  Oversized disc brakes on front (9").

Interior:  Very good shape, no dash cracks or scuffs, (black plastic interior and door panels), no loose screws or molding, no cracked glass.  I purchased custom seat covers for cool look and protection, not to hide seat condition.  Black carpeting is in excellent shape.  Like new condition - cup holders, interior coin compartment, glove compartment, door panels, door speakers interior of convertible top.  All interior and exterior lights, inside/out work (even trunk lighting).  (Red) interior dash lighting is great – new instrument cluster purchased and installed in January 2014.

Exterior:  Good condition.  Garent red Mica in color.  Paint is a bit faded in 1-2 places but overall in very good shape - pin striping is in great shape.  Clear coat is pealing on exterior mirrors. No rust at all anywhere - inside/out/fender wells and interior of trunk.  2 small dings (dent in driver side window strut)  + 1 scrape, 2 scratches but no paint chips. Driver’s side rear quarter panel has slight scratch.2 small dings in driver door (see picture).  Passenger side headlight is a bit fogged - does not effect brightness/light distance; new drivers side headlight. Body is solid, all panels in very good - good shape with moldings/gaskets and foot panels.  Black convertible top (vinyl – not cloth) is in great condition – not faded, no tears, rips, seams are solid – goes up and down (manually – not electric) easily.  Interior of top is also in excellent condition – no tears, rips/seams are good with no water spots. Doors have plastic protective ribbing on door edge. Tires are newer (early 2013)  but do have some road noise when braking.  The two convertible top (2) latches work great (I also have 2 extra that go with car).  Vinyl bra (hood) and grill bottom come with car ($300 value); extra Miata cloth seat covers (2) + extra instrument cluster.  ($200 value).  Also cloth car cover (grey) comes with car.

This car is able and ready to be driven anywhere. Regular oil changes (oil just changed); head gaskets just changed – work in excess of $2500.  I have all paperwork for work done by Anderson Mazda, Crystal Lake, IL.  NADA book value $5600.  Asking $5200.  Call cell 331-425-9481, ask for Jim.  Questions welcome.  $500 non-refundable at end of auction (within 24 hrs after) with remainder due upon conclusion of transaction – pickup of vehicle.  Transportation/pickup of vehicle is buyer’s responsibility.  Cash, PayPal or Cashier’s Check - no personal checks.

More head-up displays are coming to a dashboard near you

Tue, Feb 27 2018

With the exception of Apple products — $1,000 for a freakin' smartphone? — one great thing about tech is you typically get more for your money with each passing year. This is particularly true with automotive tech: Features like driver assists and surround-view cameras that were once exclusively available in luxury vehicles now come standard even on some economy cars. The same thing is slowly happening with head-up displays (HUD). For example, the 10-inch HUD in the 2018 Toyota Camry is one of the largest and best HUDs I've seen in any car. And a big improvement on the much smaller HUD in the latest Toyota Prius. Mazda is another mainstream brand that offers HUDs in several of its vehicles. But instead of embedding expensive components in the dash and using a special windshield, the HUDs in the Mazda3 and Mazda6 use a thin plastic lens that folds down when not in use. MINI has a similar solution, but this low-cost approach has limits in terms of size and position of the images compared to traditional HUDs that use the windshield as a screen. We're also starting to see similar lens-based aftermarket options that can be added to any car. Last year I tested a portable HUD called Navdy that taps into a car's OBD-II port to provide info on speed and RPM and uses built-in GPS and Google Maps to show the surrounding area, display speed limits and route you to your destination. Navdy also connects to an Android or iOS smartphone via Bluetooth to display data from phone calls, texts and music playing on a connected device, and it's simple to use and easily visible in almost any lighting condition. While Navdy is still available online, late last year the company ran into financial difficulties, and product support has been halted. I recently tested a new portable HUD called Hudly that's not quite fully baked and falls short of Navdy because it doesn't tap into an OBD-II port. Since a companion smartphone app for Hudly isn't scheduled to launch until next month, for now it only mirrors what's on a smartphone. So it can be used for nav and other apps, and its features are very limited. Between automakers adding HUDs in more reasonably priced cars and the aftermarket filling in the gaps for existing vehicle owners with add-ons, the technology is becoming more prevalent and affordable. And it's also getting better.

2016 Mazda2 gets EPA-rated 43 mpg highway

Fri, Apr 10 2015

To paraphrase the famous quote from astronaut Neil Armstrong, that's one small step for man and one giant leap for the Mazda2. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has weighed in on the new Mazda2 version, and says it gets a fuel-economy rating of 33 miles per gallon city and 43 mpg highway with a six-speed automatic transmission. Stick-shift gas-mileage figures are 31 city and 42 highway, which are still substantially better than the 29/35 rating from the most recent iteration of the model. That's about a 15-percent jump in fuel economy, people. More importantly, the Mazda2 beats out competitors such as the Hyundai Accent, Kia Rio Eco and even the Honda Fit in terms of fuel efficiency, which is pretty good company. The Mazda2 boasts a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine. But it is the upgrade to six-speed transmissions in both manual and automatic versions that seem to be making the biggest difference in the ratings. Mazda started unveiling details about the next-generation Mazda2 last year, and last fall began production of the model at Mazda's new factory in Salamanca, Mexico. At that time, the Japanese automaker had already sold more than 2.4 million Mazda2 vehicles since the model's introduction in 1996. Related Video:

So, just how different are the Fiat 124 Spider and Mazda MX-5 Miata?

Wed, Nov 18 2015

"We leveraged a great platform." That's how Bob Broderdorf, Jr., Fiat's North American director, summarizes the creation of the 124 Spider. We all know Fiat's new roadster shares its underpinnings with the fourth-generation Mazda MX-5 Miata, but there are a lot of key differences to keep them separate in the eyes of consumers. Mazda may have engineered the platform, but Fiat added many of its own touches. Here, we'll take a closer look at the spec sheets of the two cars, and summarize the major differences between the Japanese and Italian roadsters. If you need a refresher, read our full First Drive of the 2016 MX-5 Miata, and glance at all the Fiat 124 Spider details in this post. Design Fiat Chrysler design lead Ralph Gilles is super excited about this car. "I think it's going to change lives," he told the assembled media at an event in Auburn Hills, MI, earlier this month. Yes, it's definitely exciting to add a small roadster to any lineup, especially one that uses such a proven platform. But we're not sure people are going to get all that jazzed about it from a design standpoint. You'll either love it or hate it, and we're kind of leaning toward the latter. Every single body panel is new, and the design is "100 percent Italian." There are a number of creases and angles throughout the exterior, with a squared-off rear end and rectangular taillamps. Fiat trusts you'll be able to spot the similarities between the new 124 Spider and the original, but we're not so sure. We can see a bit of the old car's grille on the new car's face, and the dual hood blisters are a nice throwback touch, but that's about it. Trust us when we say that this car looks way better in photos. In person, it really didn't wow us. Of course, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. One colleague told us his wife, a long-time Miata owner, hates the look of the new one but will absolutely adore the Fiat. Good for her, and good for Fiat. But based on design alone, we'll take the Mazda every single time. What about you? Dimensions When Broderdorf said Fiat leveraged the Miata's platform, that means the Italians took it as-is. The two cars ride on an identical, 90.9-inch wheelbase. The front and rear tracks lengths are the same, at 58.9 and 59.1 inches, respectively. But that's where the similarities end.
