Up for sale is my Mazda Miata.  This car has been the best car I have ever owned; the most fun, most reliable, most fuel efficient hands down.  It is, however, not a very good second car for a growing family. The “A Package” made reference to in the "trim" line above included power steering, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, aluminum alloy wheels and cassette stereo.  I have set a reserve price of 2k because I need some sort of down payment for a more family oriented car.  I believe this to be a fair price given it's condition and especially because of the fact that it has the original hard top; these tops are virtually unavailable used and around $1500 new (without hardware)  I have included a list of reasons that I found at http://www.miata.net/garage/hardtop/ as to why this option of a hard top is very nice to have.

·       The Spec Miata racing series requires Original Equipment (OE) hard tops or no top at all.

·       The hard top increases chassis rigidity and reduces aerodynamic drag for better performance.

·       The car is quieter and more comfortable on the highway with the hard top on.

·       The OE top's large window reduces blind spots.

·       The hard top has a rear defroster and is more insulated for winter use.

·       The hard top increases vehicle security. Many people never lock their cars for fear of the soft top being cut.

·       It makes the car look entirely different. I think it looks much more anonymous - I never get comments on the car when the top is on!

·       It increases resale value, since hard tops do not depreciate significantly. A 10-year old Miata with a hard top would be worth 20% more than one without!

The are two things this car needs(or can be done if you so desire)...you can recharge the A/C-because it does not blow cold...and you can repaint it-because the paint is original.  The A/C is the original R-12 system which blows colder than than the R-134a on today's car.  The compressor has a small leak that takes about a Texas summer till you need a recharge or you could fix it and be dome with it.  The paint I have never worried about because I HATE to have to park a mile away in the parking lots and get all upset when a rock chips it on the highway.  I love owning the miata but not being owned by it.

I have done no modifications to this car other then the ones I am about to list here:

1)   I have added front and rear sub-frame braces to stiffen the chassis.  I also added one in-between the seat belt towers.  These three braces have made a world of difference in stiffening up the chassis.

2) After stripping the cockpit of seats, consoles, mats and carpet  I added b-quiet sound deadening panels (http://www.b-quiet.com/ultimate.html) to every part of the cockpit; the floor panels, firewall, behind both seats and on the package shelf where the convertible top rests when down.  I even added to the inside of the doors!  These panels are covered with another layer of sound and heat deadening material (http://www.autozone.com/autozone/accessories/Thermo-Tec-24-x-48-in-one-side-foil-thermo-guard-FR-heat-shield/_/N-269m?itemIdentifier=398829_0_0_).  The entire cockpit is completely carpeted with this material.  On top of that I re-installed the factor carpet and you would never know it was there other than the dramatic reduction in heat and noise.  I also sprayed the the inside of the trunk with boom mat (http://www.designengineering.com/category/catalog/boom-mat-acoustical-products/boom-mat-spray)  In demonstration of this I have included two pictures in the line up of photos; one shows the carpet behind the drivers seat being lifted up in order to expose the material under it and the other is of the trunk in which you can see a gray part of the trunk in the center extending past the carpet.  That is the boom mat that was sprayed on.

3) The transmission gave out about a year and a half ago.  I replaced the entire transmission with a low mile tranny out of a 1996 Miata.  The gear ratios are very different on these as opposed to the earlier modes.  The new one allows you to continue driving at a very low RPM and lower speed in second with out having any trouble.  This is helpful in lots of situations like slow traffic on the highway or a rolling stop at a stop sign.

Well, that's it.  If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

Automakers want to stop the EPA's fuel economy rules change, and why that's a shortsighted move

Tue, Dec 6 2016

With a Trump Administration looming, the EPA moved quickly after the election to propose finalizing future fuel economy rules last week. The auto industry doesn't like that (surprise), and has started making moves to stop the EPA. Ford CEO Mark Fields said he wanted to lobby Trump to lower the standards, and now the Auto Alliance, a manufacturer group, is saying it will join the fight against cleaner cars. The Alliance represents 12 automakers: BMW, Fiat Chrysler, Ford, GM, Jaguar Land Rover, Mazda, Mercedes-Benz, Mitsubishi, Porsche, Toyota, VW, and Volvo. Gloria Bergquist, a spokesperson for the Alliance, told Automotive News that the "EPA's sudden and controversial move to propose auto regulations eight months early - even after Congress warned agencies about taking such steps while political appointees were packing their bags - calls out for congressional action to pause this rulemaking until a thoughtful policy review can occur." The EPA was going to consider public comments through April 2017, but then said it would move the deadline to the end of December. That means that it can finalize the rules before President Obama leaves office. The director of public affairs for the Consumer Federation of America, Jack Gillis, said on a conference call with reporters last week when the EPA originally announced its decision that it is unlikely that President Trump will be able to roll back these changes. Gillis also said on the same call that any attempt by the automakers to prevent these changes would be history repeating itself. "These are the same companies that fought airbags, and now promoting the fact that every car has multiple airbags," he said. "These are the same companies that fought the crash-test program, and now are promoting the crash-test ratings published by the government. So, it's clear that they're misperceiving the needs of the American consumer." There are more reasons the Allliance's pushback is flawed. Carol Lee Rawn, the transportation program director for Ceres, said on that call that the automotive industry is a global one, and many automakers are moving to global platforms to help them meet strict fuel economy rules around the world.

Mazda expands scope of vehicles affected by Takata airbag recall to 330k

Fri, Dec 12 2014

Earlier this week a Reuters report indicated that Mazda was considering a nationwide expansion of its recall for vehicles equipped with Takata airbag inflators. The company has now confirmed said expansion, with the vehicle count jumping from 86,770 to 330,000 affected in the US. As before, the affected vehicles are Mazda6 and RX-8 cars from the 2004 to 2008 model years. Mazda reports that Takata has tested a "large number of inflators removed from Mazda vehicles" and not found any to be "non-compliant" as of yet. With that said, the company also reports in its statement that one 2005 Mazda6, located in Florida, has been identified as having had an "abnormal" deployment of the driver's side airbag. For what it's worth, though the company's statement references the Takata inflator issue as a proper recall, it is calling its own program of notification a "Safety Improvement Campaign" for the moment. Find the full, if brief, Mazda press release in the form below. UPDATED MAZDA STATEMENT REGARDING TAKATA AIRBAGS Dec 11, 2014 WASHINGTON, DC (December 11, 2014) – In addition to the actions announced on December 4, 2014, as discussed in a separate document, Mazda today announced the following steps in the Takata recall: Mazda will institute a nationwide Safety Improvement Campaign of 2004-2008 model-year Mazda6 and RX-8 models equipped with certain Takata airbag inflators. The nationwide Safety Improvement Campaign will cover the driver's-side airbag inflator, as Mazda has not made a safety defect determination at this time. This action will support us to gather additional parts for examination and to promote customer satisfaction and safety. There are approximately 330,000 vehicles included in this Safety Improvement Campaign in the United States So far, Takata has tested a large number of inflators removed from Mazda vehicles, and NONE have been found to be non-compliant at this time One vehicle – a 2005 Mazda6 located in Florida – has been identified as having experienced an abnormal driver's-side airbag deployment. Mazda has worked closely with NHTSA on this situation Mazda will participate in the independent, industry-wide joint testing program for Takata airbag inflators For history, on December 4, 2014, Mazda announced: It would expand the area of the high-temperature, high-humidity region recall to include the Gulf Coast states.

Mazda has no plans for an RX-9, despite ongoing rotary development

Wed, Dec 7 2016

We know Mazda is capable of making wonderful cars in any form or bodystyle. It also likes to tease enthusiasts with promising concepts like the stunning RX-Vision. In news that's sure to raise the ire of enthusiasts around the world, it seems the automaker has no plans to follow through with a production version of that beautiful, Soul Red coupe. In fact, it doesn't look like Mazda is interested in building any sports car that would slot above the Miata. In an interview with Automotive News, Mazda CEO Masamichi Kogai responded with a simple "No" when asked if Mazda has plans for a larger sports car entry. Kogai was asked if Mazda has any plans for a production rotary. He said that the 1.5- and 2.0-liter engines in the Miata are more exhilarating. That's a debatable and subjective argument that thousands of rotary owners both past and present would likely disagree with. It's more likely that despite ongoing development of the Wankel, Mazda is still struggling to meet emissions standards. Despite the advantages of a rotary (high power-to-weight ratio, compact size, rev-happy nature), it's not very fuel efficient and struggles with emissions testing. Also, despite the prestige and attention a halo sports coupe could potentially bring, Mazda is a small, independent automaker that needs to focus on mass appeal. Creating an all-new design with a unique engine isn't cheap. Badging a non-rotary car as an RX would be sacrilege, so don't expect an RX anything anytime in the near future. Current RX owners should take a moment to lament. Their car probably needs another quart of oil anyway. Related Video:
