Toyota and Mazda set to expand partnership

Toyota and Mazda are already teaming up for the Scion iA and Mazda2, but that partnership might just be the beginning. Reuters reports the two Japanese companies could expand their work together, with Toyota chipping in its experience with both fuel cells and plug-in-hybrid tech, and Mazda contributing its know-how in regards to its Skyactiv line of engines. The report cites a pair of unnamed sources that are "not authorized to discuss the matter publicly." The move, on the surface, is certainly appealing for both parties. Mazda has very little experience with hybrids (remember the Ford-rebadged Tribute Hybrid?), let alone something as advanced as a fuel-cell vehicle. Teaming with Toyota, arguably the world's greatest hybrid manufacturer, would give it a serious leg up. For the Japanese giant, meanwhile, a partnership with Mazda could expand the economy of scale for the Mirai FCV's tech, while Skyactiv engines would do well in replacing the base engines in cars like the Corolla, Camry, and RAV4. 2019 Mazda MX-5 Miata 30th Anniversary Edition coming to Chicago

While most people in the auto industry are fixated on the Detroit Auto Show just around the corner, Mazda is getting ready for the Chicago show next month. The company will celebrate the anniversary of the reveal of the original Miata there with a 2019 Mazda MX-5 Miata 30th Anniversary Edition. Mazda released a single teaser image of the car, and it took us a minute to realize it really was a photo of a car. Looking closely, you'll be able to make out the roofline of a Miata RF in bright red. It also appears to have some gunmetal metallic wheels. Based on those details, the car sounds similar to the 25th Anniversary Edition Miata. That model featured a special white leather interior and a matching Tourneau watch. Mazda seems to like giving out watches with its anniversary Miatas, having provided Seiko watches with the 10th Anniversary cars. Those were painted in a special blue with a matching blue top and blue and black leather interior. Watch a high-speed chase from a motorcycle-mounted officer's point of view

Riding a motorcycle through high traffic can be a stressful experience. And we don't even want to imagine what it's like to have to actually pursue someone on a motorcycle. Fortunately, we don't have to. Officer Troy Gurley of the Florence, Alabama police force recently attempted to stop a vehicle for traffic violations. The driver, 24-year-old Justin Sanders, figured he could use his Mazda3 to outrun the bike cop. Turns out, not so much.
Gurley pursued Sanders for nearly five minutes as the Mazda driver ran stop signs, swerved through traffic and raced through residential neighborhoods, but the perpetrator couldn't shake the tenacious and experienced rider. Other units soon joined the pursuit, and Sanders thought it best to leave the protection of his car to attempt to flee on foot. From there, it didn't take officers long to apprehend him.
