Car was completely restored after my purchase.  As can be seen from the photos, this was a true frame off restoration with extensive renovation.  Driven 9650 miles since restoration.

Renovation and upgrades Included:

  • Chassis stripped to bare metal
  • Chassis reinforced at front cross member back to engine mounts and under differential in preparation for substantial power increase.
  • Chassis was primed and painted.
  • Body:
    • There was damage in several areas.  Everything was repaired including “welding” in one replacement door sill.
    • All cracks reinforced on back side
    • All stress cracks repaired with tissue glass on front side, filled and leveled.
    • Engine bay totally restored
    • Rebuilt one door sill reinforcing steel tube
  • All rubber parts and bushes replaced.
  • All fasteners with a few exceptions replaced.
  • New adjustable rear SPAX shock and new Lotocones
  • New adjustable SPAX front Shocks
  • All calipers rebuilt including new pistons, painted gold
  • New handbrake cable
  • Larger than stock rear pads in stock calipers
  • Discs all turned
  • Replaced one bent suspension arm
  • New ball joints and trunion inserts
  • New rear wheel bearings
  • Wheels all sandblasted, epoxy primed and finished coated: black on back and Lt. Titanium front
  • Steering rack rebuilt to spec with new boots
  • Hood re-shaped for a BD wedge in place of Stromberg hump.
Renovation of Drive Train:
  • All steel parts cleaned and painted
  • Diff. seals replaced
  • Added S130 stiffening bracket
  • Rebuilt clutch slave cylinder
  • New small bore master cylinder (no booster system for very firm pedal)
  • New release bearing
  • New clutch disc - recent
  • New steel face on aluminum flywheel – recent
  • Custom made pins to protect rear suspension in case of Rotoflex failure (they work!)
  • Tires: Michelin XVS-2’s on steel peg drive wheels (center nut)
Motor:
  • I believe the Cosworth BD motor conversion is the easiest and most “period correct” engine conversion for an original Elan or +2
  • Dave Bean Stage 3 Motor – rated 190 HP at 9000 RPM
  • 1700 cc Cortina block and blueprinted crank and rods – limits motor to 7400 RPM; all of the torque of 190 HP motor, likely 175 HP max.
  • 45 mm DHLA Delorttos
  • High capacity and pressure oil pump (60+ psi)
  • Luminition ignition and Lucas Sport Coil
  • Gear-drive starter
  • Bean exhaust: 4-2-1 to 2 1/4 ” pipe, ceramic coated, and heat wrapped
  • One glass pack in middle of car and SuperTrap tunable muffler
  • Cold air intake with large K&N in nose
  • Electric fuel pump plus regulator
  • Cooling:
    • Stock radiator re-cored with extra row
    • SPAL fan
    • Temperature switch on engine outlet
    • Nose to engine bay sealed for all air thru radiator

Electric:

  • Alternator with external voltage regulator
  • Voltmeter
  • Wiring is custom:
    • All 16 gauge or heavier
    • 16 modern fuses versus 4 original
    • Three ground loops
    • Wiring diagram, loop sheets, wire and fuse lists available with car
  • Relays for headlights, horn, fan and fuel pump
Interior:
  • Solid walnut custom dash board with multiple coats of lacquer
  • Original front seats restored with repaired / replaced springs and metal parts and new webbing and foam.
  • Front seats two panels recently replace with original grain vinyl
  • Rear seats new foam and vinyl and new vinyl on side panels
  • Original re-webbed seat belts (front only)
  • New carpets
  • “Stretch” material used for dash, center console and many other soft areas
  • Door panels done with single sheet of vinyl (Okay but not original; I have original panels in poor condition.)
  • New headliner (Okay but not perfect)
Exterior:
  • Recent windshield replacement
  • Paint is Jaguar Brooklands Green
  • Entire body stripped and repaired (some major) and restored.
  • First paint job blistered after a couple of years due to an error in preparation.  First paint was a base coat / clear coat.
  • Hood, trunk and roof have been repainted in same paint code with a single part paint system – color match is very good
  • Rest of car needs to be repainted from primer up to remove remaining blisters.
  • Only two stress cracks have appeared since body restoration (one headlight pod and one washer nozzle hole)
Sounds System:
  • Alpine Tuner / CD Player plays but does not hold memory
  • Polk Component speakers in rear side panels
  • 8” sub-woofers on center tunnel

Pricing

It is quite difficult to price such a car.  The engine alone is worth at least $15K to the right buyer.  I started bidding at a reasonable but low price to be sure I would get bidding started to see what its value really is.  I would love to get the “Buy It Now” price and hope someone goes for it.  The reserve price is set well below the BIN price and I would not let it go for less than that price at this time.

The car can be driven just as it is for general street use and blasting that motor down an open road.  Every older Lotus is a project car either needing work like the paint on this one or the owner can always think of a new upgrade he wants to make depending on his intended use.  By 1969 standards the car handles very well on the narrow tires. To get the car to handle as good it goes, new wheels and tires would be needed.  There are two good choices for the center nut / peg drive wheels from Panasport (13x5) or Minilites (14 x 5 1/2 ).  There are lots of good tire choices for these wheels especially the 14” wheels.

You are welcome to ask questions via ebay or come see the car in South Jersey.

Payment: Send $1000 via PayPal within three days of end of auction.  We can arrange payment in full and car pick up after order confirmation deposit.

Lotus Advanced Performance division wants to make your dreams come true

Wed, Feb 9 2022

Lotus took a big step in its quest to position itself as a British alternative to Porsche by launching a division called Advanced Performance. Run by a former Aston Martin executive, Lotus Advanced Performance will design and build one-off and few-off models, among other tasks. Most high-end and specialty carmakers operate a program that gives customers some degree of freedom in terms of customization. Lotus was, until now, largely an exception to this rule. It hopes to make up for lost time by giving its Advanced Performance division a surprisingly long list of responsibilities. First the department will be responsible for building "ultra-exclusive and unique vehicles" that will not be part of the firm's regular-production line-up. One of these (shown in a sketch above) looks like it draws inspiration from classic Formula One cars. Details are few and far between, but the massive rear wing speaks volumes about the kind of halo cars we'll see in the not-too-distant future. What's unclear is whether Lotus will take customer requests. We've reached out, and we'll update this story if we learn more. Designing limited-edition models and developing race cars will also fall within the scope of Advanced Performance's responsibilities. And, it's the door that buyers who want to customize their car will need to knock on; they'll be able to select different paint colors, trim materials, and upholsteries. Optional extras and a range of Lotus-branded accessories will also emerge from Advanced Performance's headquarters. Immersing customers and enthusiasts into the Lotus world is important as well, so Advanced Performance will organize tours of the brand's production lines, organize driving academies around the world (including on the Hethel test track in England) and prepare "money can't buy" opportunities for clients. There's no word yet on what these experiences will look like; more information should emerge later in 2022. Lotus put Simon Lane in charge of its Advanced Performance division. He's a good choice: his resume includes leading Aston Martin's Q division, whose list of responsibilities looks a lot like Advanced Performance's. Q notably brought us the V8-powered Cygnet in 2018 and the one-of-a-kind Victor unveiled in 2020. Some of its other projects have been more tame: it gave the DBX a long list of carbon fiber parts. Detroit Electric SP:01 electric Lotus project not dead yet

Wed, Jun 18 2014

Detroit Electric is still on board to produce the Lotus Exige-based SP:01 electric sports car, which has been delayed more than once already. According to the carmaker, the SP:01 prototype is currently undergoing testing at a facility in Europe, as we can see in the above photo provided by Detroit Electric. Details about the production schedule and on-sale date for the SP:01 are still unclear, but Detroit Electric says it will announce more about that in the coming weeks. Production was originally supposed to begin last year, but was delayed when plans to build the car in Plymouth, MI fell through. Production is now planned to take place in Holland, but there's still potential for future models to be made in Detroit. The company has stated that the SP:01 will come with a base price tag of $135,000. Like the Tesla Roadster, the Detroit Electric SP:01 uses a Lotus chassis. The car's electric motor provides 201 horsepower and 166 pound-feet of torque to the rear wheels, pushing the car to 62 miles per hour in 3.7 seconds, with a top speed of 155 mph. Range on a full charge is said to be more than 180 miles. The SP:01 has been off to a bit of a rocky start, but this bit of news shows there's still life in the project. Let's just hope it all continues smoothly. See what Detroit Electric has to say for itself in the press release below, or check out our original post about the SP:01 for all the details about the car. World's Fastest Production Electric Vehicle Prepares for Launch Detroit Electric, the international electric vehicle manufacturer, is finalising dynamic testing of its SP:01 pure-electric sportscar at a facility in Europe ahead of its introduction in several world markets. The lightweight, two-seat, rear-wheel-drive, open-top sportscar promises to thrill the EV market with its blistering performance and exhilarating dynamics. This latest version of the SP:01 has seen additional development work carried out by Detroit Electric's engineers and designers since a pre-production version of the vehicle was revealed to the media at events in Detroit, USA, and Shanghai, China, last year. Further details of the car and Detroit Electric's production and sales plans will be announced in the coming weeks. How the fastest Elise ever compares to 3 sportscars you know

Tue, Feb 16 2016

The Lotus Elise had its 20th anniversary last year, and the British sports-car maker's belated celebration is the quickest production Elise ever around its test track. The new Elise Cup 250 can sprint to 60 miles per hour in 3.9 seconds and reach a top speed of 154 mph. It's essentially Lotus' answer to a Porsche Cayman GT4. The Elise Cup 250 replaces the Cup 220 in the model lineup, and Lotus plans to limit production to 200 units annually. The 1.8-liter supercharged four-cylinder now makes 243 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque, compared to 217 hp and 184 lb-ft from the predecessor. The company claims the Cup 250 laps its test track in 1:34, which is four seconds better than the 220. On paper, the Cup 250 could give a Cayman GT4 quite a fight. The Porsche's 385 hp wins on power, but it weighs significantly more at 2,955 pounds. Those differences translate to a slower 60 mph run of 4.2 seconds but a faster 183-mph top speed. We also think the upcoming Jaguar F-Type SVR could make for interesting competition around a very tight track. A recent leak suggests the new model has over 560 horsepower and a 200-mph top speed, so it would easily win on an open course. On a curvy circuit, the Lotus could be an intriguing challenger. Lotus Elise Cup weighs a scant 2,053 pounds in normal trim and 2,030 pounds with the optional Carbon Aero package, which includes carbon fiber parts for the front splitter, rear wing, rear diffuser and side-floor extensions. To save weight, Lotus fits the car with a lithium-ion battery, carbon fiber seats, and forged alloy wheels. The suspension and brakes carryover from the 220, including Bilstein dampers, Eibach springs, and AP Racing brakes. Lotus models often have a sparse interior, and that continues with the Cup 250. The options list includes usually common items like air conditioning and cruise control. A package even combines a radio, carpets, and sound deadening. Standard cars come with a red or black Alcantara interior, but leather is available. The Cup 250 goes on sale in April for 45,600 pounds ($65,170 at current rates), but it isn't available in North America. This forbidden fruit makes for an interesting comparison to other stripped-down models, though. For example, the Evora 400, which is for sale in the US, is slightly slower to 60 at 4.1 seconds but its 1:32 time around the Hethel test track is two seconds a lap quicker.
