2006 - Lotus Exige on 2040-cars
San Luis Obispo, California, United States
Model Overview The Lotus Exige was introduced in 2006 as a hard-top version of Elise. It carries many of the best features of the Elise, such as the all-aluminum chassis, and the feather-light design. Weighing in at 2,077 lbs, the Exige is one of the lightest closed cars available. Besides fixing the roof, Lotus stiffened the suspension and made subtle changes to the sheet metal. The Exige features a unique engine cover and rear wing, as well as a front fascia that helps provide additional downforce over the Elise. For 2007, Lotus wanted to improve engine performance, so they added a supercharger to the 1.8L Toyota-sourced engine. This boosted output to 220 horsepower and torque to 165 ft-lbs, all while increasing efficiency to 23 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway. But what has not changed is how dedicated Lotus is to making the Exige the ultimate driver's car. The seats are specially shaped to embrace the driver, but the thin padding means that every nuance of the road is transmitted to his or her hips. The car sits extraordinarily low at 45 inches tall. The steering is not power-assisted, but the ratio is quick and communication with the road is razor sharp. The only transmission available is a six-speed manual. The Lotus also features only four cubic feet of cargo space--1.3 cubic feet less than a Mazda MX-5.But that's the cost of the Exige's blistering performance. Lotus claims a zero to sixty time of 4.1 seconds. The Exige's mid-engine design, racing-style anti-lock brakes, and Eibach/Bilstein suspension mean this is a serious sports car. Lotus didn't want to dilute the essence of the car, but they did spare a few popular comfort items. Among them, air conditioning, remote keyless entry, leather seats with leather inserts, and a Blaupunkt CD player. The Exige is available in several configurations to suit the ways different people intend to use it. The Touring Package adds full leather seats, power windows, and sound insulation. Description of Car Here is an absolutely beautiful 2006 Lotus Exige S that is in excellent condition and an absolute blast to drive. This particular car was loaded from the factory with every option, White paint, Touring Package with leather seats and an overall more comfortable interior and an i-pod hook up. Additionally this car was prepared with a Carbon Fiber Splitter, Schroth ASM Racing Harnesses, Light Weight Battery, Custom Engine Tune and Katana II supercharger means this engine is making 255 hp! Also fitted is a Larini Sport Exhaust, Ferodo Street / Track brakes, rigid engine mounts, “bollock” shift knob, Toyo R888 tires, DBW Pedals. This car performs flawlessly and makes for an excellent affordable track car that can be driven to and from the track! With the weight reductions and the supercharger, this car is making 260 hp per ton; compare that with a NEW Porsche 911 that only makes 230 hp per ton. You decide how this translates into driving fun. This car is fully street legal with current California smog!!! There are not many track day toys that can be as reliable as a Toyota, with the performance of a super car. Most of the original factory Lotus parts are available with the car. These truly are excellent cars and are very rare with less than 300 imported to the US. This is an accident free car that is ready to be driven and enjoyed. This is a great value and these cars will undoubtedly be sought after as collectible cars in the future!!! This car earns lots of thumbs up everywhere you go and is a pleasure to drive. It would make a great addition to any collection or a weekend showpiece. James Bond Lotus Esprit submarine car headed to auction [w/video]
Fri, 28 Jun 2013We've covered many cars from the movies and TV that have made their way to auction (the original Batmobile, good old General Lee and even Bond's iconic Aston Martin DB5), but this one ranks up there among the rarest and coolest. RM Auctions has just announced that the Lotus Esprit submarine car used in the James Bond film The Spy Who Loved Me has been added to the docket for its upcoming auction in London, September 8-9.
Of course, there are dozens of Bond cars floating around out there in collections, but none as unique as this Lotus, which ended a chase scene in the movie by taking a long walk off a short pier and transforming itself into a submersible. Since CGI was a meaningless collection of letters back then, the producers of the film actually built a fully functional Lotus Esprit submarine for the shoot. They hired Perry Oceangraphic in Florida to turn one of their six Esprit body shells into a fully functioning submarine, and former US Navy Seal Don Griffin was tapped for piloting duties. RM Auctions claims the Esprit submarine cost over $100,000 to build at the time, which is about $400,000 in today's dollars.
The submarine car comes with a incredible story, too. After filming in the '70s, it was shipped to Long Island, NY where it was kept in a storage unit that was paid in advance for ten years. When the storage contract ended in 1989 and no one claimed the contents, they were sold off in a blind auction to an area couple who had no idea what they were getting. The car has been shown occasionally in the years since, but its value remained purely speculative, until now. To date, the most valuable Bond car we know of is the original Aston Martin DB5 used in Goldfinger and Thunderball that sold for $4.6 million in 2010, but when the gavel falls at RM Auctions' London sale in September, we'll find out if the car nicknamed "Wet Nellie" on set can beat it.
Lotus to receive $16M government grant
Mon, 25 Nov 2013Troubled British automaker Lotus is getting a second infusion of cash following a 100-million-pound ($161.5-million) investment by its parent company DRB-Hicom that was made in August. The substantially smaller investment, a mere 10 million pounds ($16.2 million), comes from the British government's Regional Growth Fund.
The fund, which is part of a 3-billion-pound ($4.8-billion) fund to spur economic growth in the UK, will allow Lotus to invest even further in research and development as it seeks to reinvent its lineup of lightweight sports cars. The fund will also allow the UK-based outfit to provide further training for its new crop of employees.
"This grant is part of a wider strategy for Lotus created to ensure we thrive and grow. We are responding to increased global demand for our cars and engineering consultancy services and this grant will help to position Lotus as the forefront of global automotive innovation," said Aslam Farikullah (shown above with UK Business Secretary Vince Cable MP), the chief operating officer at Lotus.
Lotus Emira V6 First Edition starts at $93,900 in the U.S.
Sun, Oct 3 2021A Lotus Talk forum thread revealed the letter Lotus sent to U.S. buyers who put in reservations for the coming Emira. The automaker revealed U.S. pricing; the V6 First Edition arriving in early 2022 starts at $93,900, and in late 2022 as a 2023-model-year-offering there will be a base four-cylinder Emira that starts at $74,900. Before the base I4 comes, the four-pot will also get a First Edition that we expect will elevate that $74,900 figure. Those prices don't include destination. That V6 isn't cheap, of course, but it's less than the $100,000 price tag we guessed at based on the Emira's European pricing. That launch car also comes just about fully loaded, graced with the Driver's Pack, Lower Black Pack (more on that in a moment), Design Pack, and Convenience Pack, plus optional 20-inch wheels with diamond-cut two-tone finish and two-piece brake discs with branded calipers. It won't cost anything to swap the wheels for silver or black versions. The only other big-time options we know about so far are the $1,400 Extended Black Pack, which adds more black accents in places like the roof, mirror caps, and exhaust finishers, and the $2,150 six-speed automatic to replace the six-speed manual. But why would you get an automatic? The engine in the initial Emira is the same Toyota-sourced supercharged 3.5-liter V6 found in the Evora, producing 400 horsepower and 310 or 317 pound-feet of torque depending on transmission the automatic gets the greater torque. The go-to competition for the V6 version is the Porsche Cayman GT4, the German doling out 14 more horsepower than the Englander for the same claimed 0-60 time, while being about $8,000 more expensive. Next year's base model will run with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder procured from AMG, producing 360 hp and shifting through a dual-clutch transmission. The four-cylinder starts at about $2,400 more than the 350-hp Cayman S, but both cars will weigh and accelerate just about the same. The six colors available now for the Lotus are Seneca Blue, Magma Red, Hethel Yellow, Dark Verdant, Shadow Grey and Nimbus Grey, but Lotus says more colors are coming. Word is Lotus plans to update its configurator on October 18, too, which should provide a better idea of what's going to be possible. The Emira will replace every current model in Lotus' range, the Evora, Exige, and Elise, and be the last new internal combustion sports car from the Hethel maker.
