1988 Lotus Esprit Turbo

VIN: SCCFC20A8JHF62478

More than $11,000 in maintenance receipts

Peter Stevens redesign generation--Type 910 turbo inline four-cylinder engine--Five-speed manual transmission

Original leather interior--Original owners handbook--Power windows

Upgraded three-fan cooling fan system

AEM Universal Water/Methanol Injection Kit installed.

Why did previous owner install this $400 kit? It reduces air inlet and exhaust-gas temperatures, which allows for increased boost pressure and advance timing without having to run higher-octane fuel. It’s like getting to run 100+ octane gas for the price of Premium!

Area Lotus Performance Specialist at Intermecanica in Westchester, NY, who has worked on Esprit Turbos since 1976, and Lotuses since 1968, claims this is the most powerful ’88 he has seen.

Better performance than some of the V8’s he has serviced and driven. And also one of the most well maintained.

Some history on the car:

A great sports car with meticulous maintenance documentation with the 1988 Lotus Esprit Turbo you see before you.

British car manufacturer Lotus made the Esprit from 1976-2004 with a future release set in 2014.

In 1987, the Esprit underwent a redesign by Peter Stevens for its fourth generation. It was often known by its project code of X180.  A new Lotus patented process was introduced to create the new body called the VARI (Vacuum Assisted Resin Injection) process which offered more advantages than the previous hand-laid process. Kevlar reinforcement was added to the roof and sides for roll-over protection.

The Stevens styled cars retained the mechanical components of the previous high compression Esprit and turbo Esprit but introduced a stronger Renault transaxle. The exterior style changes were accompanied by a redesign of the interior allowing more room for the driver and passengers.

This Vehicle:

The Lotus you see pictured has great ride and performance. This Esprit was well-cared for as the previous owner provided more than $11,000 in maintenance receipts from various shops around the southern California area. The original owners handbook is included with purchase.

The black exterior paint shows well, and the original saddle leather interior shows some slight wear from usage but it does not take away from the drivability of the car.  And with some time, the leather can be returned to near new condition, if not new.

This Lotus comes equipped with power windows. The sports car sits on four Lotus alloy wheels wrapped in Firestone Firehawk tires measuring P195/60R15. Under the hood, you’ll see where this car gets its “turbo” moniker. The 910 turbo inline four-cylinder engine runs fantasticly. This engine is mated with a five-speed transmission. A note from the previous owner states this car has an upgraded cooling fan system with a three-fan setup. It allows this car to idle cool indefinitely in 100-degree stop-and-go traffic.

This car has withstood the California heat and is ready to sharpen your collection. VIN is SCCFC20A8JHF62478, and mileage reads 64,700.

It is being sold on a clear title. GET OUT AND DRIVE!

Lotus Type 132 crossover EV teased five ways in video

Tue, Nov 30 2021

Lotus has combined its series of video teasers of the Type 132 crossover into one reel. The result provides peeks at five of the features we can expect on the electric CUV when it launches next year. Under the "Breathe" section, there's the active lower grille, divvied-up hexagonal openings that twirl open or closed to provide the right combination of powertrain cooling and vehicle aerodynamics. Titled with "See," there's what looks like a sensor detection unit rising from the roof; it looks like a LIDAR unit pointed toward the rear, but it's impossible to know from the clip. In the "Stretch" section, we see an active rear spoiler moving into a higher drag configuration, connected to a fender with lines that evoke the Evija and Emira. Finally, in "Awaken," there's what looks like a giant screen canted toward the driver and towering over the instrument panel. The Type 132 will commence Lotus' EV-only series production future, the first of four models due in the next few years, and the largest. After it will come a sedan marketed as a four-door coupe known as Type 133, expected on sale in 2023, a smaller crossover called the Type 134 that will debut in 2025, and a sports car currently dubbed Type 135 that's planned for 2026 and could get an Alpine-branded sibling. The four-door models are expected to ride on Lotus' Evolution architecture for "premium" vehicles, with available dual-motor powertrains that might get up to 750 horsepower powered by batteries up to 120-kWh. The sports car will get the E-Sports platform Lotus will share with Alpine and sell to other manufacturers, the junior relative of the Extreme platform that supports the 1,973-hp Evija.  Related video: This content is hosted by a third party. Lotus Esprit cancelled? [UPDATE]

Thu, 04 Oct 2012

Two years ago, we were gobsmacked when humble Lotus shocked the automotive world by wheeling out no fewer than five new models - admittedly in various stages of development - at the 2010 Paris Motor Show. The ambitious onslaught of new sheetmetal came at the behest of then-CEO Danny Bahar who aimed to broaden the British marque's appeal by dramatically expanding its portfolio. Bahar was later thrown out by new Malaysian owners DRB-Hicom in a management shakeup that seems to still be, well, shaking out. Bahar was deposed over accusations of financial wrongdoing and the controversial executive has fired back with a $10.6M lawsuit.
Against this chaotic background, a cornerstone of Lotus' revival plans hinged on the rebirth of its Esprit supercar (shown in 2010 concept form above). According to new reports, however, the Esprit has been cancelled, a victim of the company's uncertain finances and direction. Depending on which rumor you choose to believe, the two-seat coupe was slated to receive a house-built V8 and possibly turbocharging or hybrid power. That may all be moot now, however, as DRB-Hicom is reported to have scrapped Bahar's plans wholesale, a development that apparently includes killing off the mid-engined Esprit, too.
UPDATE: And this, friends, is why we have this story with a question mark and a Rumormill tag - Lotus is denying that the Esprit has been killed off.

How the fastest Elise ever compares to 3 sportscars you know

Tue, Feb 16 2016

The Lotus Elise had its 20th anniversary last year, and the British sports-car maker's belated celebration is the quickest production Elise ever around its test track. The new Elise Cup 250 can sprint to 60 miles per hour in 3.9 seconds and reach a top speed of 154 mph. It's essentially Lotus' answer to a Porsche Cayman GT4. The Elise Cup 250 replaces the Cup 220 in the model lineup, and Lotus plans to limit production to 200 units annually. The 1.8-liter supercharged four-cylinder now makes 243 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque, compared to 217 hp and 184 lb-ft from the predecessor. The company claims the Cup 250 laps its test track in 1:34, which is four seconds better than the 220. On paper, the Cup 250 could give a Cayman GT4 quite a fight. The Porsche's 385 hp wins on power, but it weighs significantly more at 2,955 pounds. Those differences translate to a slower 60 mph run of 4.2 seconds but a faster 183-mph top speed. We also think the upcoming Jaguar F-Type SVR could make for interesting competition around a very tight track. A recent leak suggests the new model has over 560 horsepower and a 200-mph top speed, so it would easily win on an open course. On a curvy circuit, the Lotus could be an intriguing challenger. Lotus Elise Cup weighs a scant 2,053 pounds in normal trim and 2,030 pounds with the optional Carbon Aero package, which includes carbon fiber parts for the front splitter, rear wing, rear diffuser and side-floor extensions. To save weight, Lotus fits the car with a lithium-ion battery, carbon fiber seats, and forged alloy wheels. The suspension and brakes carryover from the 220, including Bilstein dampers, Eibach springs, and AP Racing brakes. Lotus models often have a sparse interior, and that continues with the Cup 250. The options list includes usually common items like air conditioning and cruise control. A package even combines a radio, carpets, and sound deadening. Standard cars come with a red or black Alcantara interior, but leather is available. The Cup 250 goes on sale in April for 45,600 pounds ($65,170 at current rates), but it isn't available in North America. This forbidden fruit makes for an interesting comparison to other stripped-down models, though. For example, the Evora 400, which is for sale in the US, is slightly slower to 60 at 4.1 seconds but its 1:32 time around the Hethel test track is two seconds a lap quicker.
