1991 Lotus Turbo Esprit SE The mid-engine Lotus Esprit was conceived in 1972 by two of the world’s premier automotive designers; Colin Chapman, the Lotus founder and innovative design engineer, think Lotus 25 & Lotus 49, and Giorgetto Giugiaro, one of the most prolific body designers with the Lamborghini Miura and Maserati Ghibli among many others to his credit. Production began in 1976 and continued thru 2004. The Stephens body smoothed the lines and added for the Turbo Esprit SE, a charged cooled 2.2 liter four cylinder twin cam engine, sporting 264 HP high revving power plant capable of 164 MPH and 0 to 60 in 4.6 seconds. The Esprit SE rightfully gained the reputation of Britain’s first Super Car. It competed with Ferrari, Corvette and Porsche of the era. This car brings Lotus’ sure and predictable handling together with stunning acceleration and phenomenal breaking. The 1991 Lotus Esprit is the fourth Lotus I’ve owned; a lotus enthusiast since 1968. Although I’ve only owned the Esprit SE for a couple of years, it was enough time to fully sort the car from a very sound original example and to add electric power steering via column assist. If you’ve a driven pre 1993 Esprit with it's 7 1/2 ” wide front tires and 6’ wide body in a parking lot, you’ll appreciate this addition. I will attest to the soundness of this car. It definitely provides the experience of driving a near race car on the street; it can be docile throughout town and turn into a beast when asked to on the highway! This 1991 gorgeous example has original calypso red paint with full dark grey leather interior. At 23 years old and 70,000 miles, she has averaged a little over 3000 per year; those who know will tell you that the best thing for a car is to drive it! Yes, she has a few stone chips and patina, but presents very well. She has always been garaged and shows no rust. The interior and carpet has been recently freshened. A Lotus worthy of the legend | 2017 Lotus Evora 400 First Drive
Fri, Oct 14 2016Lotus is back, both literally and figuratively. After the British brand's two-year absence, the Evora 400 marks its return to the American market. It also shows what's in store as Lotus moves forward after a rough few years. We'll cut straight to the point: The Evora 400 is the best car Lotus has ever made. The heritage of the brand founded by Colin Chapman is centered around the holistic benefits of light weight and simplicity. But historically, light was a synonym for fragile. Heap on the old British build-quality stereotypes like leaking windows and intermittent electrics, and you have the Lotus reputation for brilliant but fickle cars. Owning a Lotus is a badge of honor, the car-culture equivalent of riding a fixed-gear bicycle. And while quality has improved, even modern Lotus models like the Elise, Exige, and previous Evora have a decidedly minimalist approach to comfort. That lack of modern amenities kept sales to a minimum before crash-test standards forced Lotus's hiatus from our shores. And by modern amenities we mean basics like functional air conditioning, a cabin you can climb into without pulling a muscle, and trim pieces that don't fall off from normal use. So when we say the Evora 400 is the best Lotus ever, we mean that in more than one way. It's of a material and build quality befitting the $93,785 starting price, and it retains the almost telepathic connection to the driver while increasing performance on all fronts. The 400 in the name stands for 400 horsepower. Power still comes from a Toyota-sourced 3.5-liter V6, but a new supercharger is now intercooled and delivers about 9 pounds per square inch of boost, up from 5.5 psi. It's a 55-hp jump, with a modest torque increase of 7 pound-feet, to 302. The numerical suffix, though, might suggest this is just a variant, like the Evora S was to the original Evora. Not so. Lotus says over two thirds of the parts are new, including front and rear body panels. The new Evora has a cleaner look, less like an inflated Elise and more like the mid-engine exotic that it is. View 29 Photos But the biggest change to the Evora is the interior. The door sill, perhaps the biggest hindrance to practicality, is now 2.2 inches lower and 1.7 inches narrower. The footwell is also 3.3 inches wider. Getting in and sitting now just feels like it does in most other cars, which, for Lotus, is a revelation. Hey, there's room for a dead pedal to the left of the clutch!
Lotus Esprit all but ready to go, but held back by management issues
Mon, 26 Nov 2012Brief and disappointing is this report from Autocar on the status of the Lotus Esprit: it is finally ready and sitting at the light, but the light might not go green for a long time. The good news is that from being a concept two years ago at the Paris Motor Show, the aluminum and carbon fiber revival coupe is "purportedly almost finished." It is powered by a twin-turbo, 5.0-liter V8 with something like 650 horsepower, boosted by a kinetic energy recovery system (KERS) and shifting through a seven-speed paddleshift transmission. Even with all that, the UK price is said to be around that of a Porsche 911 4S Cabriolet, and the car only needs "signing off and minor tweaking."
The bad news is that former company owner Proton couldn't stay independent long enough to see through the company's ambitious five-concept-car assault - led by then-CEO Dany Bahar who was hired explicitly to lead such a campaign - and was swallowed up by Malaysian auto supplier DRB-Hicom. For a brief spell Lotus had to shut down production for lack of funds. Then the new owner cleaned house, sweeping out Bahar and, according to the Financial Times just one month ago, the Esprit and every other concept with it. Just after the FT piece came out, Lotus denied the Esprit had been canceled. Still, according to Autocar, the management whirlpool is keeping the Esprit "far from becoming a production reality."
If we're honest with ourselves, we'll keep in mind that the Esprit has been slipping into and out of a terminal ether for what seems like decades. None of us knows what is going on inside Hethel HQ, but the fact that there really is a lightweight, twin-turbo, 650-hp Lotus Esprit finally ready to be produced has to be, in spite of all else, very good news.
Lotus announces Exige V6 Cup racer
Mon, 20 Aug 2012The Lotus Exige is once of the most focused race cars that you can purchase on the market today, but for those individuals who desire to track the mid-engined racer, Lotus has released its latest no-frills, all-go racecar: the Exige V6 Cup.
The Exige Cup features a supercharged 3.5-liter V6 making 346 horsepower, enabling the 2,380-pound race car to get from zero to 62 mph in just 3.8 seconds. Power is put to the road with the help of Lotus Dynamic Performance Management, which allows for Touring, Sport and Race settings for the engine.
The Exige V6 Cup also features revised aerodynamics in the front fascia and rear diffuser, and it rides on a fully adjustable suspension that reaches the road with special wheels wrapped in Pirelli P-Zero Trofeo tires.
