Lexus Bladescan is another new headlight safety breakthrough U.S. won't get

Fri, Jun 21 2019

Lexus is back at it with innovative lighting technology. The BladeScan headlights available in Europe on the 2020 RX utilize a new mechanism for throwing light further down the road, aiming that light more precisely, and doing so without blinding other road users. Lights from other OEMs with the same capabilities have increased the number of LEDs inside the housing for finer control. The BladeScan module inside the Lexus lights holds the number of LEDs down to 10 on each side of the RX, which Lexus says is a more cost-effective solution. In fact, BladeScan uses fewer LEDs than Lexus' most recent adaptive high-beam system, which has 24 LEDs on each side. The LEDs in the new module are arranged in two rows, eight on top, two on bottom. The diodes are fed information about objects ahead, and adjust their intensity to dim light aimed at an oncoming car, or illuminate a pedestrian by the roadside. However, the LEDs don't shine their light down the road, they shine their strobing light onto two blade-shaped mirrors — hence the name BladeScan — that rotate at high speed. The light reflects off the mirrored blades and into a lens, which orients the beam down the road. Not only is the reflected light easier to handle for oncoming drivers, the system has aim accurate to 0.7 degrees. Lexus' current adaptives are accurate to 1.7 degrees, making BladeScan a 143-percent improvement. That means the new feature can throw even more light into areas that are hard to reach with current lights — Lexus says pedestrian recognition at night has increased from 105 feet to 184 feet. Buyers of the 2020 RX will be able to take advantage when the new crossover goes on sale in Europe later this year. Naturally, U.S. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 108 means we won't get BladeScan — that goes for you, too, Canada. The now-52-year-old U.S. law mandates a single low beam and a single high beam setting, with no intermediate settings and no activation of high and low beams simultaneously. Toyota, Audi and BMW have been trying for six years to get FMVSS 108 changed to permit new and potentially lifesaving headlight technologies. The automaker wrote in a statement to Carscoops, "Last December, Lexus submitted a petition to NHTSA to allow ADB in the United States. Currently, we await the Agency's decision and hope to see an amendment in FMVSS 108."

2022 Lexus LC 500 Inspiration Series gets red accents, unique wheels

Fri, Mar 18 2022

Every year spawns a new Lexus LC 500 Inspiration Series model, and 2022 is no exception. You’re looking at the latest LC 500 Inspiration Series here, and this one features a subtle (model exclusive) Iridium exterior paint option. The yellow, green and blue special edition model options in years past were certainly more enticing than this one, but donÂ’t think this Inspiration Series is entirely dull. If you opt for the Convertible instead of the coupe, Lexus pairs a Dark Rose fabric soft top with the Iridium paint that looks lovely. This LC also features unique 21-inch wheels that were “3D machined,” a Lexus first. They are two-tone in appearance, featuring both bright and dark elements. Those darkened elements pair well with many of the accents all around the car. For example, Lexus uses a special dark finish for the grille, rocker garnish, headlight/taillight surrounds, and rear spoiler. The interior is a black/red two-tone with the red being the same Dark Rose color used on the ConvertibleÂ’s soft top. YouÂ’ll see Dark Rose used on the seat stitching, perforations, seatbelts, center console, doors and dash. Additionally, each Inspiration Series model will come with stainless steel sill plates that call it out as the special model it is.  Only 150 Inspiration Series models will be produced for 2022, and a badge on the center console will recognize the specific unit that it is. The LC 500 Inspiration Series Coupe starts at $105,575, including the $1,075 destination charge, and it comes equipped as a fairly loaded Touring package model. Meanwhile, the Convertible starts at $116,655. TheyÂ’ll be arriving at dealerships in late spring. Related video: This content is hosted by a third party. 2014 Infiniti Q50, Lexus IS 250 fail to achieve Consumer Reports 'Recommended' rating

Tue, 22 Oct 2013

Infiniti and Lexus might be a little concerned now that both of their new luxury sedans, the Q50 and IS250, were unable to net Consumer Reports vaunted "Recommended" rating during their first year on the market. In fact, not only did the two fail to earn a "Recommended" rating, they finished behind the vast majority of the competition after testing, including the BMW 328i, Mercedes-Benz C250, Lincoln MKZ and Volvo S60 T5.
The Q50 managed to snag a "Very Good" rating overall, but CR criticized it's road manners for not being as thrilling as the car it (sort of) replaces, the G37. The mag called the handling mundane and the steering dull, while also remarking on the poor controls. According to CR, the interior quality is "nothing special." Shade was also thrown at the Q50's reportedly poor ride.
Compared to the IS, though, the Q50 got off easy. CR called it "neither sporty nor luxurious," while criticizing the 2.5-liter V6's lack of oomph and poor fuel economy. The mag then went on to lambaste the IS's handling, steering, interior, cabin space and infotainment system.
