Here's why our Lexus NX is uglier than the rest of the world's
Fri, 01 Aug 2014Take a good look at the image above. That's the US-market Lexus NX 300h, and it looks, well... distinctive. Although the entire NX crossover sports styling that could certainly be described as controversial, it's the front end of the 'ute that seems to draw most of the ire, befitted as it is with Lexus' so-called spindle grill.
Now, take a look at the pair of images just below. The one on the left is from the States (the same model seen above), while the one on the right comes from Europe. Notice a difference? The lower front fascia of the European Lexus NX dips down much lower than the one from the US, and it looks much more refined because of it.
Why the disparity between the two designs? According to Top Gear Philippines, the reason why the US gets the more pointy proboscis is because of its classification as a light truck. It seems trucks are required to have some sort of concession to the car's approach angle - in other words, a truck should be able to clear an obstacle that a car might hit. Why does Lexus care if the NX is a car or truck? Well, that has to do with how fuel economy is reported, as trucks are given less-stringent requirements for Corporate Average Fuel Economy purposes.
Lexus will bring production UX small crossover to Geneva
Tue, Feb 20 2018Lexus has announced it will show its upcoming UX crossover at the Geneva Motor Show next month. The new nameplate goes 0n a smallish crossover, designed to compete with the BMW X2, the Jaguar E-Pace, the Mercedes-Benz GLA and others. Some reports say the UX would be replacing the CT200h hatchback, which has been on the market since 2011. The manufacturer first used the name on a concept at the 2016 Paris Motor Show, and the shapes have now been worked into a production version. The Paris concept was certainly bulky and scifi-like, but then again, so is the Toyota C-HR on which the UX is reportedly based. Lexus trademarked the model names UX 200, UX 250 and UX 250h with the U.S. Patent and Trademark office way back in 2016, so expect those to reflect the powerplants on offer; the 250h stands for a hybrid version, as has become the norm. The UX's production version might also bear a similarly over-the-top spindle grille as on the LF-1 Limitless concept, which will also be shown at Geneva for its European premiere. The teaser image released by Lexus shows little more than a full-width taillight panel that takes a curious upturn at each end, and much of the crossover is still veiled by darkness. We'll see if any more teasers surface before the car's debut. Optimistic Lexus bumps US sales target higher
Mon, 29 Jul 2013Last year Lexus sold 244,166 cars in the US, slotting into third place in the luxury segment behind BMW and Mercedes-Benz. Earlier this year Lexus said its target was 260,000 units in the US (which would still put it behind BMW's and Mercedes' numbers from last year), but Automotive News reports that it has raised its upper outlook to 270,000 cars.
The half-year pace hasn't been enough to make either number, but Lexus is gunning for a 15-percent gain in IS sales behind the arrival of the 2014 model, and this is also the first full year of sales of the new ES and LS. Lexus will most likely end the year in third place in the luxury segment behind BMW and Mercedes again, even if it does sell 270,000 units, but has said its prime directive is "good, steady growth."
