This is an amazing example of a classic P38 Range Rover SE!

The vehicle has been garage kept and lightly driven over its lifetime with only 83,909 miles!

First, this is an 18 year old vehicle so imperfections should be expected but it is in amazing condition! It has been very reliable and is clearly off road capable.
It runs and drives incredibly well and has been one of my daily drivers for the past couple of years with both highway and city driving. I would trust it to drive across the country tomorrow!

You'll notice the off road tires, brush bar, and expedition rack that set this vehicle apart.
  • Factory 1997 Range Rover roof rack (by Safety Devices). I searched high and low for this expedition rack and eventually came across one. It makes some wind noise at highway speeds but the look and function are unparalleled!
  • Factory brush bar is rubberized, looks great, and is in excellent condition!
  • Tires are Nitto Terra Grappler 265/70R16; at about 31" tall these are the largest tires you can get under the rover without interference. They are grippy, great on road even in wet weather, very off road capable, and they have a lot of tread remaining!
The Range Rover's air suspension works great, I recently replaced the left-front height sensor and it has been working flawlessly. I have had several Rovers and I think this is one of the best features about them! The gives the rover a very solid yet smooth ride. There are 4 levels (notice the three vehicle height differences in the pics):
  • Standard Height: for normal city driving
  • Access Mode: the vehicle is dropped by 2.5" below standard height to make it easy to enter/exit the vehicle (my wife love this)
  • Highway Mode: the vehicle is dropped 1" below standard height when traveling over 50mph
  • High-profile / Offroad: the vehicle is raised 1.6" above standard height
  • Extended-profile / Offroad: 2.8" above standard height, selected by the ECU when it senses the vehicle is high-centered
I have had a lot of 4x4's and I'm convinced that the Range Rover has one of the best 4x4 systems. The vehicle is a true 4x4 not AWD vehicle and it has a true low range gearbox selection. It has very robust axles and moving parts. There is a button on the transmission to select sport mode when in high range or manual shifting mode when in low range. The manual mode, when selected, prevents the vehicle from shifting into either a higher or lower gear to give you greater control with off road.

I'm in Texas and the AC is cold, it works well.
The vehicle has full power windows and sunroof, the front passenger window doesn't know when it has fully closed so the motor doesn't auto-stop, it otherwise works perfectly opening/closing and this hasn't been an issue.
It also has power mirrors and auto-dimming rear-view mirror.
Cruise control has been finicky but it works.
I haven't used the factory 6 CD changer so I can't speak to its operability.
The Radio works great! I haven't tried the cassette player.
The front and rear fog lights all work well.
The vehicle also has a heated windshield for rapid defogging and de-icing.
The vehicle has two keys, one remote doesn't work and the other remote is finicky.
There is a small dent in the rear bumper, you can see it in the pics.
I noticed that the ABS light is on in the pics, it comes on when you start the vehicle but goes off as soon as you start moving.

The vehicle has leather seats all around:
  • The drivers seat is in fair condition, there are cracks in the normal entry area an on the front of the seat but there are no holes.
  • The front passenger seat has some lighter cracking and is discolored in the cracks but there are no holes.
  • The rear seats are in very good condition. I don't think there are any cracks and there are no holes.
Overall the vehicle is in amazing condition, this would make for a tough daily driver, a capable off roader,

Land Rover could build a baby Defender on a platform sourced from BMW

Mon, Aug 12 2019

The collaboration between BMW and Jaguar-Land Rover started out small, it was originally limited to motors for electric cars, but it might not stay that way for long. The Tata-owned British sister companies will allegedly rummage through Munich's sizable parts bin to build nearly half a dozen cars scheduled to come out during the 2020s. According to a report by British magazine Autocar, Jaguar has started designing two small cars that will join its growing family of Pace-badged soft-roaders. They'll be new additions to the firm's portfolio, not replacements for existing cars. One will be a regular crossover, while the other will be a swoopier, form-over-function four-door model ostensibly marketed as a coupe. Both will slot at the very bottom of the Jaguar portfolio, below the already pretty small E-Pace, in a growing market segment where the competition is fierce, and profit margins are thinner than an i3's tires. Here's where BMW apparently comes in. Instead of developing a platform from scratch, the two crossovers could ride on the hybrid-ready, front-wheel drive FAAR architecture found under the third-generation 1 Series hatchback and the upcoming 2 Series Gran Coupe. If we believe an earlier report claiming Jaguar and BMW will also share engines, most of the hardware found under the sheet metal will have German genes. All-wheel drive will certainly be available, and it could also come from BMW. The same platform -- and, presumably, the same engines -- would provide the basis for a Land Rover-badged model positioned in the same segment. Autocar learned it will be to the next-generation Defender (pictured) what the Mercedes-Benz GLB is to the G-Class. Some key design cues will carry over, but the two models will share absolutely nothing under the sheet metal. The soft-roader could resurrect the Freelander nameplate when it goes on sale during the 2020s. Looking even further ahead, the front-wheel-drive platform the next Mini Countryman and X1 will utilize could find its way under the replacements for the next Range Rover Evoque and Discovery Sport. These plans could very well change; the Evoque and the Disco Sport barely entered their second generation, so they're not due for a replacement until the second half of the coming decade. While neither company has confirmed or denied the report, the partnership makes sense from a business standpoint.

Jaguar Land Rover tech tracks brainwaves, heart, lungs

Wed, Jun 17 2015

Jaguar Land Rover has been on a bit of a tech kick lately, and its latest is called Mind Sense, which uses biometric sensors to monitor and enhance the driver's level of alertness. Jaguar is installing brainwave sensors adapted from NASA into the steering wheel of an XJ sedan, along with medical-grade heart and respiratory sensors in the seat. Together, the sensors would determine if the driver is focused on the road, dozing off, merely thinking about something else, or if the driver's stress level suddenly peaks. The system would enable the vehicle to better prepare for an emergency, or for a future autonomous vehicle to hand off control to a better-prepared driver where needed. At the same time, JLR is also working on an enhanced infotainment system designed to reduce the amount of time the driver's hands are off the wheel and their eyes are off the road. The system determines which control they're reaching for on the display and engages it while their finger is still in mid-air, deploying an ultrasonic pulse to provide artificial haptic feedback without actually having to touch anything. Finally, a new haptic accelerator pedal is under development that could alert the driver to respond to an impending situation without overloading the senses with chimes and beeps. These latest developments follow the demonstration of a remote-control system installed on a Range Rover Sport, and follow in a long line of new technologies under development by the British automaker. JAGUAR LAND ROVER ROAD SAFETY RESEARCH INCLUDES BRAIN WAVE MONITORING TO IMPROVE DRIVER CONCENTRATION AND REDUCE ACCIDENTS - Jaguar Land Rover's pioneering Mind Sense project is researching measuring brainwaves to monitor driver concentration in the car - Researchers are developing a Wellness Seat in a Jaguar XJ which analyses the driver's heart rate and breathing to monitor driver health and stress - Touchscreens that predict which button you want to press as the user's fingers are in mid-air - to minimise time spent with eyes off the road - Jaguar Land Rover researchers use new haptic accelerator pedal to communicate hazards to the driver Whitley, UK: Jaguar Land Rover has revealed a range of new road safety technology research projects that are being developed to reduce the number of accidents caused by drivers who are stressed, distracted and not concentrating on the road ahead.

A hybrid and electric Corvette, plus we drive the Ioniq 5 | Autoblog Podcast #728

Fri, May 6 2022

In this episode of the Autoblog Podcast, Editor-in-Chief Greg Migliore is joined by Road Test Editor Zac Palmer. Zac drove the electric 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5, and Greg drove the fire-breathing 2022 Maserati Levante Trofeo. The two dive deep into the relatively heavy news week by starting off with a discussion about the upcoming hybrid Corvette before chatting about what the electric Corvette might be like. They have a chat about the possibility of Porsche and Audi officially joining the Formula 1 field. Then, Greg and Zac get into some quick-hitting news to round out the segment by dissecting the updated Kia Soul (now without a turbo), the 30th Anniversary Edition Land Rover Defender and the new CEO at Aston Martin. Following the news and drive reviews, they rope in Senior Editor, Green John Beltz Snyder to give them a quick download of what went down at the first drive for the 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning. Finally, they reach into the mailbag and answer some questions from someone who is less than pleased about infotainment systems in some new cars. And lastly, the gang hears back from someone they helped out in a prior Spend My Money segment on the podcast. Send us your questions for the Mailbag and Spend My Money at: Podcast@Autoblog.com.
