                                Solid 1997 Land Rover Discovery I. This is a fairly rare, original XD created by Special Vehicles Division. It is correctly titled and badged as an original Special Vehicles Extreme-duty DI. There were 250 of these made only in 1997, and all were sold as 1997 models ( there is extensive history on the XDs available). There are reportedly less than 100 left according to the LR registry. This XD has been a California Land Rover all of its life, and as such, the aluminum panels, roof, doors and undercarriage are rust free and solid throughout, making it a perfect candidate for a mild restoration or drive it as it is.

This is a fairly rare, one-year-only model of the Discovery XD in the US. I had no intention of selling it, but a sudden job-relocation makes this improbable. Reluctantly, I am posting it for sale here to find it a good Rover home.

              This XD comes fully-equipped  with the standard-options package ( all Power accessories work, including all four windows, COLD A/C system, factory alarm, cruise control and central locking), with the original stock 4.0L V8 engine, heavy-duty suspension revised with EMU 3" lift set up,  springs and  struts, Updated front suspension and correct XD optional wheels.

Additionally, it has the XD standard SAFARI PACKAGE: Original and Rover all-metal sidesteps, Full wraparound brushguard with headlight guards, taillight guards, factory tow package and a rare SAFETY DEVICES full-basket roof rack with a pair of HELLA 1000 roof lights, a pair of HELLA 100 auxiliary roof lights, HELLA 100 foglights and a rear HELLA 520 service light. It has 169K original miles, and it runs well.

The automatic transmission shifts well into all forward and reverse gears. There is NO slippage or grinding of gears. No rearend, axle or bearing noises. The 4x4 system works well into both L and H gearing. It has had both differentials and transfer case rebuilt by West Coast British.

The 4.0L engine runs strong. It is tight and not a leaky mess like most. It is completely original, without any modifications from stock. Other general maintenance and mods include:

* Rebuilt FRONT and REAR differentials

* Rebuilt transmission

* Rebuilt transfer case

* New rear axles

* New rear wheel bearings and seals

* EBC rear rotors and pads

* EBC front rotors & new pads

* Heavy-duty BOSCH alternator

* New timing chain & sprockets

* New BOSCH battery

* New starter with lifetime-warranty

* Replaced transmission cooler lines

* New CARDONE MAF sensor

* New BOSCH O2 sensors

* High-flow auxiliary oiling system

* New Beck-Arnley water pump

* Rebuilt radiator

* FLOWMASTER muffler

* Recent all-new BFG 22' all-terrain tires

* New spark plugs & wires

* Rebuilt steering gear box

* Rblt ABS module

* Billet steering box shaft

* Discovery II cup holder pair

          This XD rides very well, with NO front-end vibrations, wobbling or pulling. It passed California's stringent SMOG EMISSIONS TESTING WITH FLYING COLORS. Currently titled in CA with a clear title ( in MY name), currently registered through 2014 and insured.

                The body is in remarkable condition for its age, with NO rust whatsoever, anywhere in, under or around the car. The body is solid and RUST-FREE, as any clean, California car should always be. The original yellow ( unique to the XD) factory finish has held up remarkably well. Minor fading in the roof. The original yellow still retains a nice shine despite the passing of years, evident that it has been well cared for despite its ruggedness. It would It would probably clean up even better with a good polishing.

It still has its original XD side decals, XD side emblems and its sought-after " Special Vehicles " badging in the rear tailgate. These are the originals, not reapplied.

The interior upholstery is in better than average condition, except the bottom of the driver's front seat which is sunken-in some. There are NO cracks, splits, tears or separation of the seams in any of the seats, and they are all the rare Tetra fabric, unique to the XD models only. The rest of the upholstery, including the other seats and all door panels are in very good shape, very clean and with no damage. The factory carpeting was removed and HERCULINE applied. Additionally, this XD has the off-road knobbed, rubber Discovery mats in front AND rear. The trunk area also has the heavy-duty knubbed cargo mat.

                    Overall, it is a very solid, rare Land Rover Discovery Series I, and a hard-to-find XD in its fairly original configuration, with full Safari package. It has NEVER been in an accident, abused or wrecked. I have listed the car to sell, with a very fair asking price way below market value. That being said, I have advertised it in various other venues, and am open to a reasonable, FAIR offer. I will also consider an offer with the roof rack removed.

To those that like to play games, this is NOT going to be the car for you. To the serious, potential interested bidders, I welcome your bid and any questions you may have concerning the XD. I reserve the right to end this auction early at any time, should a serious offer present itself, so bid early and bid often~!

          Upon end of the auction, I would like to receive payment within three business days. PLEASE ensure that your source of funds is in place and sorted out before placing a bid, in order to make timely payment.

If that means asking your significant other, checking with your boss that you are not getting transferred to Saudi Arabia or checking any significant tornado patterns landing in your home state, PLEASE do so prior to placing a bid and prior to the end of the auction.

Upon receipt of payment, I shall immediately mail you the CA title and bill of sale to the GREAT DIVIDE, via USPS priority mail with delivery confirmation, unless otherwise noted. Method of payment can be a cashier's check, or money order(s). Personal, business, C.C advance or annuity account checks may be utilized, but must clear funding before the car is released. Additionally, a bank wire transfer may be sent to my local CHASE bank branch here in town; it allows for faster shipping arrangements and a timely closing of the transaction. Finally, PAYPAL may be used as an alternative if previously arranged between the buyer and seller (me), prior to placing a bid, and prior to the end of the auction.

     I shall be glad to assist with transportation/ delivery of this rare XD to any location, nationwide or overseas. I can make all arrangements for shipping from here to your location, at the most economical shipping rate available.

Feel free to EM or call me with questions at (650) 430-4660 ( no later than 9pm PST, please). Thank you for your interest~!

Jaguar Land Rover said to favor Europe rather than US for new plant

Sat, Feb 21 2015

With its plants running at full tilt, Jaguar Land Rover is in desperate need of additional manufacturing capacity. That's led to reports that the Indian-owned British company was looking to join European, Japanese and Korean automakers in America's southern states, all while it opened new plants in the UK and China. The company even announced it would be building the Land Rover Discovery Sport in Brazil. Now, though, reports are suggesting that JLR is looking at Europe for a new facility, rather than the US, with Automotive News claiming the company's execs are eyeing the lower costs afforded by Austria and Turkey. The report cites the Birmingham Post (UK), the broadsheet that's closest to the company's headquarters. According to the original report, labor costs and wage disputes with unions are ruling out another factory in the UK, while those same disputes with labor outfits may also be souring the automaker on a US facility. "At this stage Europe seems more likely than America. The union pay dispute had a big effect," an unnamed source told the Post. "There is a feeling of alienation that has been left over from the way the pay talks were handled." JLR, meanwhile, offered a solid no comment to the Post, with a spokesperson saying, "No decision has been taken on future manufacturing locations. We will continue to evaluate opportunities to increase our manufacturing footprint in the future." Related Video:

Jaguar XE to be built in China

Mon, Dec 29 2014

After a six-year absence, the Jaguar XE will return that most English of automotive companies to the compact premium segment, the brand's first whole-hearted launch into that market. For certain Western markets it begins production at the Land Rover plant in Solihull early next year, but it will also continue the brand's venture in to China having been chosen as the first Jaguar to be built there, according to a report in Automotive News. Jaguar-Land Rover owns a plant in Changshu, a joint venture with Chery Automobile, that started building the Range Rover Evoque this year and will add the Land Rover Discovery Sport. Previously, The Leaping Cat was selling cars built from kits at its factory in Pune, India. The brand figures to sell 20,000 cars in China next year, which would be less than a fifth of in-country sales for the JLR group, but the XE is the "spearhead vehicle" that "could make significant inroads" there, according to Jaguar. For comparison, Audi moved 120,450 A4s alone and BMW sold more than 100,000 3 Series models in China in 2013. Globally, Jaguar is predicted to sell 80,000 units this year. By 2017, after the release of the XE, new XF and coming crossover, plus factory expansions in China, Brazil and Saudi Arabia, it hopes to get that number up to 200,000 units; Forbes has a piece detailing why they think it's possible. The JLR group is shooting for a target of 850,000 units worldwide by 2020. Jaguar Land Rover gives Lyft $25M and a fleet of cars

Mon, Jun 12 2017

Lyft recently raised $600 million in a massive funding round, and now we know that $25 million of that came from Jaguar Land Rover, via its mobility services subsidiary InMotion. The car maker's investment in Lyft goes beyond just funds, however; it's providing Lyft drivers with a fleet of Jaguar and Land Rover vehicles as part of the tie-up, and it's also going to work with the ride-hailing tech company on autonomous vehicle testing. This is yet another high-profile partner for Lyft after a spate of recent new collaborators, including Waymo and, just last week, Nutonomy. Now, Jaguar Land Rover is also joining the company's Open Platform for autonomous cars: The collaboration with InMotion will see the Jaguar Land Rover-owned company "develop and test its mobility services, including autonomous vehicles" using Lyft's platform. Lyft's ability to rapidly bring on a lot of partners in the car maker space, specifically around autonomy, may have a lot to do with rival Uber's ongoing problems, which now also include mounting calls for CEO Travis Kalanick to step back, at least temporarily, from his leadership role. Lyft has also been pretty clear about seeking to partner on autonomy, rather than pursue its own tech, which is likewise different from Uber's current approach. Uber, too, has brought automakers to the table around self-driving services and making use of its ride hailing platform for mobility service offerings. Both Uber and Lyft seem interested in being the layer that connects riders and these future services, and for automakers, it means leaving a complex and challenging part of the picture to partners with experience and expertise, rather than having to spin up that part of the tech business themselves. The fleet provision in the deal is also interesting, and suggests the partnership between the two could involve more strategic cooperative service offerings ahead of the advent of commercial self-driving tech. Lyft gaining more ground among automakers beyond longtime partner GM also explains why it was reported that the ride hailing company turned down overtures regarding a potential acquisition by the Detroit-based automaker.Written by Darrell Etherington for TechCrunch.Related Video:
