1985 Land Rover Defender 110 RHD Turbo Diesel 5-speed

I purchased this vehicle last year with the hopes of having a unique bit of British history driving around Southern California. I picked it up on Ohio and figured that any problems would show themselves on the ride back to California.
The former owner had told me that the truck had a slow leak in the rear main seal, but if I just kept the oil level up during the drive there wouldn't be a problem.
I made it a few hundred miles before the fuel filter gave up. Luckily, the NAPA in the small town had two.
It made it all the way back without many issues. Even through 116 degree heat in New Mexico and Arizona.
Upon arriving back in California, I took it to a Land Rover shop to have it thoroughly checked.  The rear seal was fine, but the front seal on the transfer case was bad and the case was dry.
I had to have the transfer case removed and rebuilt. I also replaced the fuel pump as it was starting to weep.
I took it to the DMV here and was issued a license plate and registration. Two weeks later, I was informed that the vehicle was not able to be registered nor was a California title able to be issued.
I went upon my way knowing that it was just a matter of a little paperwork to get the truck legal.
Later I replaced the radiator and the Charge Air Cooler and changed all the hoses to Silicone. It started making a ticking noise so I took it back to the Rover shop and had a valve job done. Problem solved.
I month or so later, the Timing pump went out and I had to have it rebuilt.
This past month I finally got all the required paperwork ready for the DMV and upon showing all that I had acquired, they dropped the bomb.
California now has a law that basically stated that although the vehicle is exempt from EPA and DOT laws within the US, any imported vehicle newer than 1978 that is to registered in California must pass current emissions standards. That would mean on this diesel vehicle I would need to replace the engine with a properly equipped engine and transmission from a 2013 vehicle.
Their suggestion was to export the vehicle to another state.
So my dream vehicle that I have spent 6,000 more than the original purchase price is now up for sale.
Someone will get a solid vehicle that has little left to finish. I have new seat upholstery for the front row and extra replacement lights that will go with the vehicle.

Now, it is still a 25+ year old vehicle and has the normal issues of a vehicle of that vintage. The paint is in good condition (I believe that the previous owner had it painted).

It is a diesel that has been getting 23 miles to the gallon on average.

It is being sold "where is/as is" and the buyer will need to arrange transportation or just drive it home like I did. Its a great way to get to know the Rover.

Jaguar Land Rover names new manufacturing chief for EV transformation

Thu, May 3 2018

LONDON — Britain's biggest carmaker Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) is replacing its director for manufacturing as it prepares its plants for an electrified future, the firm said on Thursday. JLR operates three factories in its home market but is building its first electric car, the I-PACE, in Austria. The Indian-owned automaker's Chief Executive Ralf Speth told Reuters earlier this year he is waiting for more information on trading conditions after Brexit before he decides whether to make electric cars in Britain. On Thursday, he said Executive Director for Manufacturing Wolfgang Stadler is retiring from the business, to be replaced by Director of Quality and Automotive Safety Grant McPherson starting July 1. "He will oversee the ongoing investment into our UK and global manufacturing, transforming our plants to enable Jaguar Land Rover's exciting electrified future," Speth said. Buy a Jaguar E-Type continuation, get a matching wristwatch

Tue, Feb 28 2017

From time to time, automakers release special branded watches. Jaguar and Land Rover are no different. The latest from Land Rover isn't particularly remarkable, but one new Jaguar piece is pretty special. Jaguar partnered with British watchmaker Bremont for a line of watches, the most impressive being a 43mm watch that commemorates Jaguar's continuation series of Lightweight E-Types. Like the cars, only six of the watches will be produced, and they will be offered to the owners of those $1.5 million cars. Each watch features a serial number that matches a corresponding car, and the faces have been designed to look like the instruments aboard the E-Types. The same goes for the hands, which look like the gauge needles. The winding crown also has a tire tread pattern that wraps around the sides, with Jaguar's heritage logo on the top. And these timepieces are built with aluminum left over from the continuation E-Types. On the back is the most impressive part, though. Here is where the watch's automatic winding weight is visible. It's shaped like a vintage steering wheel, and the outer rim is made from real wood. The weight keeps the watch and its exclusive Bremont movement wound. If you can't afford this ultra-limited watch, Bremont has a line of other Jaguar watches with many of the same design cues, at prices ranging from less than $5,000 to more than $11,000. The Land Rover watch is a bit disappointing, since it bears little apparent connection to the vehicles. Zenith, the Swiss company that partnered with Land Rover for the piece, claims the design is inspired by the Range Rover. And Land Rover claims a connection in that a British explorer wore the same series watch while completing an expedition with a pair of Range Rovers. There's also the fact that the watch and the SUV are both made of aluminum, but otherwise, the Zenith watch doesn't look particularly automotive. The box sounds pretty cool, though, since it's fashioned from Land Rover wood and upholstery. Related Video:
