2003 Java Black Discovery II

Clear title, never been wrecked, rust free, originally from Texas. Black leather interior, no warning lights or faults, no leaks, starts/runs/drives smoothly without issue. Engine was replaced at 158k due to a cracked cylinder liner. Due to many common issues with 2003 and 2004 model year engines the replacement engine was sourced from an earlier model year vehicle. Donor vehicle had approximately 100k and a very well documented maintenance history, but the engine was completely gone over anyway, any worn items and seals were replaced, all new gaskets, new head bolts, new water pump/thermostat/cooling system hoses, and the top end was rebuilt with a five angle valve job. Engine oil cooler system (not factory installed on 2003 models) was also fitted at this time. Of course all fluids were replaced, as well as transmission fluid and filter, and also the front drive shaft was upgraded to a heavy duty serviceable unit. Mechanically this vehicle needs nothing. It doesn't leak a drop and doesn't burn any either!

Includes the original jack, tool kit, wheel chocks, lug wrench, complete owner's manual set, and we also have the original window sticker. Original options included Java Black Clearcoat and Rear Air Conditioning. It also includes Genuine Land Rover heavy duty rubber all weather front/rear floor mats as well as cargo area mat. It has a Terrafirma lift kit installed (approximately 2") consisting of upgraded coil springs, shock absorbers, and steering dampener. Tires are Nitto TerraGrappler 285/60R18 with a matching spare. Vehicle has a stainless steel Magnaflow muffler, ARB Offroad winch bumper (no winch installed) and window vent shades. Front and rear oval Land Rover badges have been upgraded to the late model black/silver design found on the Range Rover Sport. With the fully operational cruise control (rare), it looks/sounds great and drives even better- on dirt or on the interstate. The black paint looks fantastic and gets compliments all the time, but it is beginning to fade on the very top of the roof.

Black leather interior with power, heated front seats and folding rear seats. The interior is in fantastic shape, the only flaw in the leather is one small spot on the driver's front seat, visible in the photos. Custom black headliner. Legal window tint. One touch power windows and sunroofs work perfectly. Please note the front doors do not lock when the button is pressed but can still be locked/unlocked manually and can be opened from the inside or outside without problems. All other door locks do function properly as does the remote locking from the key handset. Sony CD stereo with auxiliary input jack, and bluetooth audio/phone capability. Clarion amplifier installed in back for the rear door sub woofers. Scanguage II unit installed on the dash to provide real time monitoring of various ECU data (coolant temperature, etc) this unit can also read and even clear fault codes on the fly.
There are no issues with the ABS, Traction Control, or Hill Descent systems. The battery, tires, and brake pads/rotors are in very good shape and should not need replacement for a long time. This is our favorite Discovery II thus far, and we have owned nearly twenty! It has all the great creature comforts of the Series II, with none of the mechanical issues, and it is just as capable of going trail riding as it is getting groceries or taking us on vacation. We wouldn't even consider selling it if not for the fact our family is expanding soon and we want a little more room for kids. Thanks for looking, if you have any questions please feel free to ask. It is also for sale locally, and we are currently driving it so the mileage may increase a bit- also the car seat shown is not included in the sale!

Jaguar CEO says people just don't want EVs right now

Mon, Jun 22 2015

"Customers are not impressed with it currently." These are the words of one Ralf Speth, CEO of Jaguar Land Rover, spoke at the Automotive News Europe Congress in Birmingham, England. The "it" Speth is referring to is battery technology, which he characterized as "too heavy, too expensive," and with power density that's "too low." That all could go some way towards explaining why the British automaker has yet to bring an electric vehicle to market, why it killed the C-X75 hybrid-turbine supercar project, and why it only recently started offering hybrid versions of its Range Rover models (and has yet to offer them in the United States). That doesn't mean the company won't pursue electric propulsion in the future, though. According to Automotive News Europe, Speth forecasts that "the next generation of batteries will be higher density, lower weight and the cost will come down." What he didn't say, exactly, is when he expects that next generation of battery tech to come around – or when JLR will start to more closely embrace electric propulsion. In the meantime, Jaguar Land Rover will continue investing in research and development. Since Tata acquired the brands from Ford seven years ago, JLR has quadrupled its R&D budget and doubled the number of engineers on staff. Related Video:

Jaguar Land Rover said to favor Europe rather than US for new plant

Sat, Feb 21 2015

With its plants running at full tilt, Jaguar Land Rover is in desperate need of additional manufacturing capacity. That's led to reports that the Indian-owned British company was looking to join European, Japanese and Korean automakers in America's southern states, all while it opened new plants in the UK and China. The company even announced it would be building the Land Rover Discovery Sport in Brazil. Now, though, reports are suggesting that JLR is looking at Europe for a new facility, rather than the US, with Automotive News claiming the company's execs are eyeing the lower costs afforded by Austria and Turkey. The report cites the Birmingham Post (UK), the broadsheet that's closest to the company's headquarters. According to the original report, labor costs and wage disputes with unions are ruling out another factory in the UK, while those same disputes with labor outfits may also be souring the automaker on a US facility. "At this stage Europe seems more likely than America. The union pay dispute had a big effect," an unnamed source told the Post. "There is a feeling of alienation that has been left over from the way the pay talks were handled." JLR, meanwhile, offered a solid no comment to the Post, with a spokesperson saying, "No decision has been taken on future manufacturing locations. We will continue to evaluate opportunities to increase our manufacturing footprint in the future." Related Video:

This Or That: 1987 VW Vanagon Syncro vs. 1987 Land Rover Defender [w/poll]

Thu, 13 Nov 2014

As I scoured auction sites and classified ads for the perfect vehicle to take into battle with Autoblog Associate Editor Brandon Turkus, I knew I needed to find something unique. You see, I'm currently 0-2 at winning a round of This or That, in which two of our editors agree on a category, choose a side, and argue it out over a (mostly) friendly chain of emails.
The first time we did this, my chosen Fiat 500 Abarth took about a third of the popular vote in our reader poll. The second time, my lovely 1980 Oldsmobile 442 did just a little bit better against a 1989 BMW 635 CSi. Despite holding the opinion that my automotive choices, though perhaps a little bit more... obscure than my fellow editors, are still better, an outright win would go a long way toward boosting my vehicular self worth a few notches upward.
With all of that out of the way, even if three isn't my lucky number after all, I go into battle against Brandon knowing full well that I've made the perfect choice: A 1987 Volkswagen Vanagon Syncro. My rough-and-tumble van/'ute has a formidable opponent in the form of a 1987 Land Rover Defender, which, truth be told, is exactly what I was expecting from Turkus, a self-proclaimed Rover aficionado.
