1993 NAS Land Rover Defender 110 10/500

I bought this truck to restore but I have a 90 and another 110 so I don’t see getting to it anytime soon.

First the good:

It is a two owner truck with roughly 61,000 miles.  It has a clean carfax and was well maintained by its owners from a mechanical standpoint.  It drives shockingly well and the engine runs perfectly.  When I got it there was a weird noise that I traced to low power steering fluid.  I filled it up and the noise is gone.  I think one of the hoses is leaking.  The inside is super clean and original.  Seats, carpet, cubby box, original radio are all in good shape.  The headliner of course is sagging but that is normal.  Tires are fairly new as are the oil lines.  They are the original style though so if you want to drive the truck as is I would advice getting stainless ones.  As is the truck is a fine driver.  Better than most.

Now for the bad.  The truck has some rust issues but they look worse than they are.  A new bulkhead is needed for sure.  I have a source for one with the closed vents so that all the original AC/Heat functionality can be kept.  If you would rather upgrade, Rovers North sells the new style and you could put a td5 dash in.  Personally I would rather keep it stock.

The sills are rusted.  These trucks came with the bottom door seals on the sills instead of the doors.  Dirt and moisture get trapped there and they rust.  It is an easy fix.  You remove the seals, and the outer layer of metal add paint, and move the seals to the bottom of the doors and the problem is fixed.

Now for the doors,

Front driver’s door has a small hole at the bottom that is easily fixed.

Rear driver’s door also has a hole.  This hole is about an inch in size and the worst damage to the doors.

The other doors just have surface rust on the bottoms.  Easily cleaned up when you move seals.

The frame is shockingly solid.  I have gone over it with a hammer and it is good.  It has scale but if someone wire wheeled it and painted it, it would be great.  One outrigger does have a small hole shown in a picture but easily fixed and the only frame issue.  Rear cross member is completely solid.

Truck also has a few dents and scrapes but nothing major.

Otherwise this is a great solid truck.  Not many out there with clear histories and relatively low miles.  For the right owner the sills and bulkhead are easy fixes.  I have done the sills on another NAS 110 and it was a do it yourself job.  See ECR website for what is required.

If the buyer needs help sourcing a bulkhead I can get them the original style.  The other option is to just fix this one.  More photos here https://www.dropbox.com/photos/c/bQnuJLyooWemGVr

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask.  Thanks

Jaguar Land Rover moves closer to building Slovakia plant

Tue, Aug 11 2015

Jaguar Land Rover has announced its intention to build a new assembly plant in Slovakia. Though it has yet to make the final decision, the British automaker has signed a Letter of Intent with the Slovakian government. Its next step is to launch a feasibility study before committing. If the company does go ahead with plans, it wouldn't be the first automaker – or even the first European luxury automaker for that matter – to start producing in Slovakia. Nor would it be the first Jaguar Land Rover plant outside the UK, either. The Volkswagen Group, PSA Peugeot Citroen, and Kia all manufacture in the Central European country. VW's Bratislava plant in particular handles production of the Touareg, Audi Q7, and Porsche Cayenne. In the past few years, JLR has expanded its production capacity to new locations outside of the UK. It has a new factory in China, one under construction in Brazil, and has been manufacturing in India – home country of its parent company Tata – since 2011. It recently announced a manufacturing contract with Magna Steyr in Austria, and is investing in its facilities back home as well. Though yet to be finalized, the prospect of manufacturing in Slovakia has proven more favorable to JLR than other locations in Europe or in the United States or Mexico – all possibilities that the company says it looked into. It has yet to reveal just what it would produce there, saying only that "the plant would manufacture a range of aluminium Jaguar Land Rover vehicles," that the plant would be earmarked to come online in 2018 and eventually ramp up production to 300,000 vehicles. The prevailing wisdom would seem to indicate, however, that the site is being considered for the next-generation Land Rover Defender. Jaguar Land Rover to cut workforce by 2,000 in push toward electric future

Thu, Feb 18 2021

Jaguar Land Rover said on Wednesday it would cut 2,000 jobs from its global salaried workforce, just days after announcing its luxury Jaguar brand will be entirely electric by 2025 and e-models of its entire lineup will be launched by 2030. "The full review of the Jaguar Land Rover organization is already under way," the company said in an emailed statement. "We anticipate a net reduction of around 2,000 people from our global salaried workforce in the next financial year," it said. However, it added that the organizational review did not impact hourly paid, manufacturing employees. JLR, owned by India's Tata Motors, said earlier that its Land Rover brand will launch six fully electric models over the next five years, with the first in 2024. Known for its iconic, high-performance E-Type model in the 1960s and 1970s, Jaguar faces the same challenges as many other carmakers as it transitions to electric vehicles while trying to retain the feeling and power of a luxury combustion engine model. Last month, Tata Motors said it was concerned by semiconductor shortages and Brexit-related supply disruptions as its luxury car sales recover, although the Indian automaker added these had not yet hit production. Tata Motors posted three straight quarters of losses as the COVID-19 crisis dented sales, exacerbating uncertainties over Britain's exit from the European Union, weak demand and rising costs, but had bounced back to clock a profit in its third quarter to the end of December. The 2,000 reduction in JLR's non-factory jobs was reported earlier on Wednesday by Sky News.

UK car output falls 14% in March, may get worse with no-deal Brexit

Tue, Apr 30 2019

LONDON — British car output fell for the 10th month in a row in March, hit by a slowdown in key foreign markets, and the sector stands to suffer a lot more if the country leaves the European Union without a deal, an industry body said on Tuesday. Output tumbled by an annual 14.4 percent to 126,195 cars in March, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders said. Exports, which account for nearly four out of every five cars made in Britain, were down by 13.4 percent. The SMMT said analysis it had commissioned predicted output would fall this year to 1.36 million units from 1.52 million in 2018, assuming London can secure a transition deal with the EU. If Britain has to rely instead on World Trade Organization rules for its trade with the bloc, which include import tariffs, output is forecast to fall by around 30 percent to 1.07 million units in 2021, returning to mid-1980s levels, the SMMT said. The forecasts were produced for SMMT by AutoAnalysis, a consultancy. Prime Minister Theresa May has secured a delay to the Brexit deadline until Oct. 31, giving her more time to try to break an impasse in parliament over the terms of Britain's departure from the EU. Foreign minister Jeremy Hunt traveled to Japan earlier this month to try to persuade the Japanese government and Toyota, which has a big presence in Britain, that London was determined to avoid a no-deal Brexit. "Just a few years ago, industry was on track to produce 2 million cars by 2020 — a target now impossible with Britain's reputation as stable and attractive business environment undermined," SMMT chief executive Mike Hawes said. "All parties must find a compromise urgently so we can set about repairing the damage and diverting energy and investment to the technological challenges that will define the future of the global industry."
