Lamborghini previews a Huracan race car made just tame enough for the road

Mon, Nov 16 2020

November 2020's Los Angeles Auto Show has been rescheduled to May 2021, but the new date is not stopping carmakers from revealing the models they planned to introduce at the event. Lamborghini released a preview image that shows what could be the most extreme variant of the Huracan to date. We'll see it in full this Wednesday, November 18. Very likely called Huracan STO, an acronym which stands for Super Trofeo Omologato, the coupe will arrive as a street-legal supercar endowed with some of the technology developed for the Super Trofeo Evo model that races around the world. Lamborghini's preview image highlights W-shaped LEDs integrated into the headlights, but the cover that obscures the STO's full design can't conceal the giant wing attached to the back end. It also looks like the hood receives a pair of deep air vents. While the photo leaves a lot to the imagination, a set of spy shots published earlier in 2020 gave us a much better look at the car's aggressive aerodynamic add-ons. We expect the cabin will ditch some of the comfort-oriented features found in the standard Huracan in order to save weight; earlier reports claimed the STO will tip the scale at approximately 330 pounds less than the coupe it's based on. Amazon Alexa compatibility won't be needed, for example. Who preheats their oven while lapping Laguna Seca? It sounds like the variant will be street-legal, however, so it won't be completely stripped down. Why the STO needs so much downforce is, if you'll pardon the pun, up in the air. Power will almost certainly come from Lamborghini's naturally-aspirated, 5.2-liter V10 engine, but we'd be surprised if the firm doesn't use this opportunity to put a few more horses in the cavalry. In the Huracan Evo, the 10-cylinder produces 632 horsepower and 442 pound-feet of torque. Rear-wheel drive and a paddle-shifted automatic transmission will come standard, and bigger brakes will help drivers keep the extra power in check on and off the track. Lamborghini will unveil the Huracan STO online on November 18. While nothing is official yet, unverified rumors claim it will arrive as a limited-edition model, and odds are it will be sold out by the time it breaks cover. Related Video:

Lamborghini, Bentley recalling models with carbon-ceramic brakes

Wed, 30 Oct 2013

An issue involving carbon-ceramic brakes has prompted Lamborghini and Bentley to recall certain models so equipped. The problem, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, revolves around the stainless steel screws that secure the brake rotors, which are prone to corrosion when exposed to salty conditions.
The recall affects 2007-2009 Lamborghini Gallardo coupes and Spyders, 2006-2010 Murcielago coupes and Roadsters and 2007-2011 Bentley Continental GTs, GTCs and Flying Spurs. All in all, some 1,136 vehicles are subject to the recall in the United States, including 263 Gallardos, 404 Murcielagos and 469 Continentals. The fix seems simple enough, with local Lamborghini and Bentley dealers replacing the problematic screws with new ones. The recall follows two notices recently issued for Audis as well. For further details, see the trio of recall notices below.

Lamborghini Revuelto gets its closeup, makes some noise

Sun, Apr 30 2023

Lamborghini revealed the successor to the Aventador at the end of March. The new biggest, baddest bull from Sant'Agata is called the Revuelto, powered by a hybrid V12 designed to celebrate the most feral side of Lamborghini's take on internal combustion while also providing everyday hybrid manners in the city and meeting global emissions regulations. The first public viewing happened at Auto Shanghai in April, the Revuelto taking its first European bow late in the month at Milan Fashion Week, where Lamborghini also showed versions of the 60th Anniversary Huracan models. Now we're getting more details on the new V12 in Lamborghini's own words, thanks a seven-minute video called "The Challenge." Most importantly, we're getting a taste of the Revuelto's sounds. A leaked trademark application in Europe from earlier this year put a clip of the Revuelto's pure EV mode on YouTube. That video's been banished, but at 3:10 in this new vid there's a sample that sounds similar to the leak. It opens up a discussion of techniques the sound engineers used to represent the new frontier for the brand, that section ending with a short blast of V12 noise. Technical officer Reuven Mohr runs through some of the special numbers defining the Revuelto: The carbon fiber "monofuselage" is composed of RTM, pre-preg, and forged carbon fiber and weighs 10% less than the previous carbon tub while being 25% stiffer; and the V12 makes 30% more power than the final Aventador while producing 30% fewer emissions. There's also an animation of the new eight-speed double-clutch gearbox that houses an electric motor. Replacing the former longitudinal transmission placed between the cabin seats with a compact unit mounted behind the engine meant being able to move the engine forward. Mohr gives the impression the relocation enabled designers to add a proper, deep diffuser. However, the 2017 Centenario gave us a taste of what we have now, including the visible chunk of rear tire. There's so much more we're still waiting to find out about the new Italian flagship, but you can start your studies with the video above. Related video: This content is hosted by a third party.
