Kia Venga puts a fresh face on mini minivans
Fri, Oct 3 2014Minivans in America have grown to become anything but mini. That's not the case overseas, however, where Ford offers the B-Max, Citroen the C3 Picasso and Kia the Venga. On the European market now since 2009, the Venga shares its underpinnings with the Soul and with the Hyundai i20. The shape which Peter Schreyer sketched for it won a prestigious iF Design Award upon its debut, but five years later, it was time for a bit of a refresh. Debuting alongside the updated Rio at the Paris Motor Show, the new Venga has received some updated sheetmetal, an upgraded cabin and enhanced equipment – all the better for transporting a (small) family around some European metropolis, where the streets are narrow and the parking even tighter.
Limited-edition Kia Stinger GTS gets all-wheel drive with a drift mode
Wed, Apr 17 2019The Kia Stinger is currently available with either rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, each with fairly distinct characters. With the limited-edition Stinger GTS, Kia wants to blend the best parts of each and create a third option for buyers: Drift Mode. Although the GTS will still be available as RWD or AWD, the all-wheel setup is focal point of the new limited-edition model. Revised to integrate "rear-wheel DNA," the new D-AWD system features a mechanical limited-slip rear differential for improved traction and power distribution. Kia also says the control logic has been tuned with a new transmission shift pattern, improved stability control, better slip control, and countersteer detection. The D-AWD-equipped Stinger GTS will have three different driving modes: comfort, sport, and drift. Comfort mode sends 60 percent of power to the rear, sport mode sends 80 percent to the rear, and drift mode gives the rear wheels 100 percent control. Drift mode will also hold gears to maintain power. No powertrain alterations will be made, as the GTS will get the 365-horsepower twin-turbo 3.3-liter V6 that pairs with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The rest of the changes aim to make the GTS feel slightly aftermarket. It gets an exclusive Federation Orange paint job, a Stinger emblem on the rear, and a rear GTS badge. Kia also gave the GTS real carbon fiber on the hood, side mirror caps, and side vents. Inside, the GTS is equipped with a Chamude headliner, an Alcantara steering wheel and center console, a wireless smartphone charger, a 720-watt Harmon/Kardon sound system, and a sunroof. Kia plans to start production of the GTS this spring and is limiting the run to 800 units. The RWD model starts at $44,995, and the AWD model starts at $47,495. Kia Niro EV revealed in Korea
Thu, Jun 7 2018The Kia Niro EV has been introduced at the Busan International Motor Show. The manufacturer says its fully electric Niro compact crossover will go on sale in its home market this year, with global sales starting later. Kia already showed the production Niro EV last month, but at that point no power figures were announced. We know them now, and the 204-horsepower rating, together with a 291 pound-foot figure, match the Hyundai Kona EV. Under the trunk floor is a 64-kWh lithium polymer battery pack, which according to Kia is good for 236 miles on a single charge. A 100kW fast charger will get the battery to 80 percent capacity in 54 minutes. There's also a smaller battery pack available with a 149-mile range from 39.2 kWh. This presumably comes with a cheaper purchase price. Also revealed is the Niro EV interior, which features a different center console and gear selector than the hybrid and plug-in hybrid (much as the Hyundai Ioniq Electric does compared to its part-gasoline siblings). Also different is the special LCD instrument cluster and the 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system that gets special EV features like charge point location services and a battery pack charge indicator. A mood lighting system is also offered, similarly to the K900 flagship sedan. There's also a driver assist suite, consisting of collision warning systems, adaptive cruise control, "Intelligent Stop & Go" and Lane Following Assist, which Kia calls a Level Two autonomous technology. Like other such systems, it uses the adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist systems to control the accelerator, brakes and steering when on a highway. The system functions between 0 and 80 mph. Related Video: Featured Gallery 2019 Kia Niro EV Image Credit: Kia Kia Crossover SUV Electric
