2018 Kia Niro Plug-in Hybrid revealed, boasts 26 miles of electric range
Thu, Nov 30 2017The 2018 Kia Niro Plug-in Hybrid was introduced Thursday at the 2017 Los Angeles Auto Show, adding a considerably larger battery pack to the existing Niro Hybrid crossover. With an estimated 26 miles of all-electric range, the Niro Plug-in is in the same ballpark as most other plug-in hybrid models like the Toyota Prius Prime (25 miles), Hyundai Ioniq Plug-in (29 miles) and Kia's own Optima Plug-in (29 miles). The Chevrolet Volt is the king of the castle at 53 miles. When the all-electric range is exhausted, it'll get 48 mpg city, 44 mpg highway and 46 mpg combined. That's actually a bit worse than the regular Niro (51 city/46 highway/49 combined), though that difference isn't as great it might seem given actual gas burned and the all-electric range. The estimated mile-per-gallon-equivalent rating is 105 MPGe. That's actually about the same as the Volt (106) and Optima (103), but less than the Prius Prime (133) and Ioniq (119). This is all achieved by the addition of a 8.9-kWh lithium-polymer battery pack and a 60-horsepower (44.5-kw) electric motor. This compares to the regular Niro Hybrid's 1.56-kWh battery pack and 43-hp motor. Despite its greater capacity, the battery doesn't take up any extra interior space, still fitting under the back seat and cargo area. It can be recharged in approximately 2.5 hours using a 240V charger, or in less than 9 hours using a regular household 120V outlet. Besides the powertrain, the Niro Plug-in is essentially the same beyond a few minor styling updates. There is a slightly different "grille" insert and some blue trim accents. It can also be equipped with LED headlamps. Related Video:
Kia sold 123 North American Soul EVs in October
Sat, Nov 15 2014How happy were those Kia hamsters last month? We're guessing they were pretty pleased, because reports are out that the South Korean automaker sold 123 Kia Soul electric vehicles in North America during the model's first month of sales on the continent. Now crank up that funky music. Kia sold 109 Soul EVs in the US and another 14 in Canada, Kia-World reports (the site is unaffiliated with the automaker). Kia's expected to move about 5,000 Soul EVs in North America by the end of next year. Kia spokesman James Hope, in an e-mail to AutoblogGreen, said the automaker doesn't specifically disclose the number of gas and electric Soul models it sells in North America. Those volume numbers are on par with lower-volume electric variants of conventional models that are generally positioned as "compliance" vehicles (i.e., vehicles sold specifically to comply with California's zero-emissions vehicle mandate). For instance, the Ford Focus Electric sold 186 units in the US last month, while the Smart ForTwo ED electric moved 150 vehicles. Honda sold 23 Fit EVs in October. The Kia Soul EV has base price of $33,700 and a single-charge range of 93 miles. You can read our Quick Spin impressions of the new EV here.
Kia teaming up with DUB to bring modified Stinger GT and K900 to SEMA
Mon, Oct 29 2018SEMA kicks off this week, so continue to look for all manner of modified cars, trucks and SUVs. For years, SEMA was ruled by aftermarket companies — it isn't called the Specialty Equipment Marketing Association for nothing — but in recent years, the automakers themselves have used the show as an opportunity to showcase a variety of fun but often garish modified vehicles. This year, Kia is bringing a pair of cars that appear to fall somewhere in the middle of the spectrum. All we have right now are a few teaser images of a bright blue Kia K900 and a silver over red and black Kia Stinger GT. Kia has teamed with DUB, one of the most famous aftermarket outfitters in the business, to design the vehicles. The K900 has been updated with gloss black accents, 24-inch wheels, a blue and black interior, air suspension and a "specially developed multimedia setup." We'll be disappointed if that doesn't mean TVs in the headrests. The Stinger GT will have 22-inch wheels, a custom intake and exhaust, air suspension and a redone interior. We won't have any other details until the cars are fully revealed at Kia's press conference, but stay tuned to the site this week for more SEMA coverage from Kia and other automakers and suppliers.
