208k Kia Soul models recalled over broken pedals

Kia is recalling a whole bunch of Souls over accelerator pedals that may bend and fracture. A grand total of 208,858 vehicles are affected, all built between July 21, 2013 and January 8, 2015. Both the standard Soul and its EV counterpart are included in this recall. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, "If the vehicle has a bent or broken accelerator pedal, the driver may have difficulty accelerating the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash." Sounds about right – a broken pedal under your right foot certainly can't be good. Kia will add supporting rubber underneath the pedal stopper in these affected vehicles. The Korean automaker will notify owners, and of course, the repair work will be performed free of charge. Look for this recall campaign to officially kick off later this month. 2018 Kia Stinger GT becomes police car for Queensland, Australia

Now that Ford Falcon and Holden Commodore production has ceased in Australia, local authorities are encountering the same problems as United States law enforcement after the Ford Crown Victoria was discontinued: what to replace the aging police cars with? While some fleets will consist of BMWs and Chryslers in the future, News.com.au reports that Queensland police will go with Kia Stingers instead. The Stingers in question will be fitted with the twin-turbo V6 engine. The first 50 cars will hit the road this week, and 150 more will join them in the long run. According to News.com.au, Kia was pushing to get the pursuit car fleet deal, and it has been co-operating with the Australian authorities to modify the Stingers for police use. Road policing assistant commissioner Mike Keating said: "The Stinger performed very well in all areas and we had nothing but top reports from all the field officers. The result is a road policing first for us, the first foreign car to perform these duties." So, it seems that if any dystopic Mad Max science fiction scenarios were ever to take place in Australia, the vehicle of choice will not be a supercharged Ford Falcon Pursuit Special Interceptor, but a twin-turbo Kia Stinger instead. In the Kia Niro Super Bowl ad, no good deed goes unpunished

After a few teasers, we finally get to see Kia's Super Bowl ad for the Niro hybrid. The ad shows Melissa McCarthy rushing off to all corners of the world to help environmental causes of all types. As soon as a call comes over the speakers of her navy blue Niro, she's ready to go. Unfortunately, as you'll see in the video above, none of her experiences go according to plan. She has a close encounter with a whale that sends her flying, rides a tree down to the ground while trying to save it, and runs from an angry rhino. The end message is that "it's hard to be an eco warrior, but it's easy to drive like one." The ad is admittedly funny, but the end message isn't exactly ideal. Fuel-sipping cars like the Niro are generally better for the environment than thirstier machines, but it's a little disappointing to see it proposed as a viable alternative to actual volunteer work to help the environment. It's a bit like wanting to go overseas to help people in struggling countries, but deciding it's too hard and buying a Fair-Trade chocolate bar instead. But hey, it's just a Super Bowl commercial, so we're probably overthinking this.
