Kia teases e-AWD Soul concept for Chicago
Thu, Jan 29 2015Kia let slip just a few days ago that it is preparing an outdoorsy concept based on one of its most popular models for the 2015 Chicago Auto Show. After a brief wait, we are getting our first look at an unnamed e-AWD concept – or at least the front third of it. By all accounts, it looks to be rough and tumble version of its popular Soul compact. Beyond some tougher looks, the concept will get some extra oomph from an electric all-wheel drive system. Plus, to fit its inspiration of letting city dwellers go on off-road adventures, the styling wears a few tweaks from Kia's California design studio. The teaser shows off black body cladding around the lower air dam and wheel wells. The headlights also appear blacked-out with white trim around them for contrast, and the orange highlights in the wheels provide some visual pop. We're curious to see if Kia will do anything else for this Soul concept's design and how much power the electric all-wheel drive system adds. With the way the teaser image is tightly cropped, it could be a different bodystyle altogether, from a convertible to a pickup. All will be revealed when the concept is unveiled on Thursday, February 12, at the show. For the moment, we're just happy it appears that Kia is finally formally entertaining the idea of an AWD Soul. Kia Motors America will unveil an advanced and capable electric all-wheel drive (e-AWD) concept vehicle at the upcoming Chicago Auto Show. This bold off-roader was conceived by Kia's California design studio and built for city dwellers seeking the ultimate urban escape. Intended to enable a wide array of outdoor activities from skiing and snowboarding, to camping, hiking and mountain biking, this rugged runabout captures the essence of adventuring at higher elevations with the promise of surefootedness in the wild. Kia's newest concept will be revealed on the Kia stand Thursday, February 12 at 9 AM. See you there. News Source: Kia Design/Style Green Kia Crossover Hatchback Concept Cars Hybrid
2021 Kia Sorento price creeps upward with the redesign
Wed, Nov 18 2020Pricing for the redesigned 2021 Kia Sorento is out, and it’s more expensive than the outgoing 2020 model. You will be paying a heavier sum for the snazzier exterior and higher quality interior on the new model. In its base LX trim, the Sorento is $30,560, including the $1,170 destination charge. ThatÂ’s $2,450 more than the standard L trim of last year. Since Kia dropped the L trim for 2021, a more fair comparison would be LX to LX trim, where the Sorento only costs $1,350 more than the 2020. If you want all-wheel drive, thatÂ’ll cost you another $1,800 over the standard front-drive model. Both the LX and S models come with the low-power, naturally aspirated 2.5-liter four-cylinder. That gets you to 60 mph in the nine-second range. More power can be had in the form of a 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, but itÂ’ll cost you. This engine (good for 0-60 mph in the seven-second range) is standard on EX trims and above, and it can't be added to the lower trims as an option. The cheapest Sorento available with it is $36,160. Adding all-wheel-drive with this engine involves paying the same $1,800 upcharge as you do with the base engine. The top trim level has two tiers: SX and SX Prestige. The standard SX is priced at $39,160, whereas the Prestige comes in at $41,760. The latter trims is the only way to get the off-road-oriented X-Line package, too. This version of the Sorento will cost you $43,760, making it the most expensive version of the crossover. The package adds an extra inch of ground clearance, locking center differential and more useful roof racks. Pricing for the late-coming hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions is not listed by Kia yet. Compared to the other three-row Kia on dealer lots (the Telluride), a base Sorento is $2,600 less. That price gap is far less than what it was before Kia eliminated the basement level L trim. However, it still provides an incentive for folks to buy the smaller Sorento if they donÂ’t need the extra space that the Telluride offers. Expect the first 2021 Sorentos to start hitting dealer lots soon. Related video:
Recharge Wrap-up: Hyundai and Kia rethinking diesel for US, BMW i partners with Soho House
Wed, Oct 15 2014Hyundai and Kia are once again considering bringing diesel vehicles to the US. "It's something that's a strong consideration for us at this point," says John Juriga of Hyundai/Kia America. Diesel would help the group meet future fuel economy standards. While the obstacles that previously kept the brands from bringing diesel to the US in the past still exist, Juriga says they see a "more direct path" to making diesel work for them. Hyundai and Kia are also considering introducing cylinder deactivation, plug-in hybrids and 9- and 10-speed transmissions to reach fuel economy targets. Read more at Wards Auto. BMW's i division is teaming up with Soho House as its official automotive partner. BMW will provide i3 EVs for the private club's members and guests to use. The two groups will also host events together focused on art, design and innovation, beginning with an art talk called, "The Naked Truth? Nudity, fashion, and the photographic image today." According to BMW's Steven Althaus, the two brands are a great match. "BMW i and Soho House share a common mindset: both brands strive for innovation, creativity as well as a special sense for aesthetic setting new design standards," Althaus says, "What I look forward to most about our partnership is our determination to create memorable and sophisticated experiences together." The trikes deliver food to local businesses and restaurants, a job usually done by air-polluting diesel trucks. The electric trikes feature cargo boxes that can hold 47 cubic feet or about 660 pounds of food. The trikes are stored in a shipping container fitted with solar panels, which charges them when they're not in use. By delivering food using solar and human power, Foodlogica is helping taking pollution and traffic congestion out of the "last mile" of food transport in Amsterdam.
