Kia Sportage first spy shots show compact crossover gets a facelift

Wed, Feb 7 2018

Here are the first spy photos for the refreshed Kia Sportage SUV. Still heavily camouflaged both front and rear, the vehicle does show some changes under the masking. One thing is that the daytime running lights are moving from the front bumper's side intakes into the headlights, possibly mirroring the halo sportback Stinger's light clusters. The front bumper design is expected to get redesigned, as well as the rear; the rear lights now have a different graphic compared to the current motif. The interior and safety equipment can also be expected to receive improvements, as the current QL generation has been with us since 2015, and it needs to stay on top of its game. The 2017 car has an overall five-star rating from the IIHS, with only the headlights getting a poor rating. No word has been uttered about any changes in the four-cylinder drivetrain, except there are some rumors about a 48-volt mild hybrid joining the Sportage powerplant ranks. K900 probably won't be last time Kia goes alphanumeric

Thu, 23 Jan 2014

This is part of an effort to ensure that the vehicle brand itself registers with consumers more than the model name.
The new Kia K900 luxury sedan stands as a four-wheeled flag in the ground of the financially fertile turf of the world's premium automakers. It's a bold move for a Korean manufacturer that was best known for inexpensive MSRPs and easy credit only a few years ago. The company has made sure it has the requisite trappings of premium motoring: indulgent size, rear-wheel drive, a powerful V8 engine, real wood trim and rich leather seats. It has also ensured the model has another important earmark of luxury - an alphanumeric name. These days, everyone from Audi to BMW to Cadillac to Lexus to Volvo rely on a jumble of letters and numbers to make up their model names. We've been told this is all part of an effort to ensure that the vehicle brand itself registers with consumers more than the model name.

South Korea island of Jeju becoming an EV-incentive heaven

Tue, Apr 1 2014

When it comes to providing some island EV love, we can point to Hawaii, which has been pushing hard for greater electric-vehicle adoption through subsidies and a broader charging network. Now, South Korea has Jeju. We're not sure if the surf is as good. Like Hawaii, Jeju is focusing on a "carbon-free" existence and lowered fossil-fuel dependency as a way to help the environment while addressing the extra expenses involved in providing fuel locally, Wards Auto says. Jeju, which is about 720 square miles, provides about $7,000 worth of EV incentives on top of those provided by the South Korean government. As a result, the cost of buying an EV can be cut in half. In the case of a Chevrolet Spark EV, going electric actually has a lower out-of-pocket price tag than buying a gas-powered counterpart on the island. South Korea's Ministry of Environment has earmarked about $14,000 in subsidies for each EV purchase, while 10 South Korean cities are adding on incentives anywhere from about $2,800 to $7,400 per vehicle. South Korean automaker Hyundai and affiliate Kia are just starting to do their part to boost the country's EV sales, which didn't even break the 800-unit mark last year. Kia recently said it will start making its 2015 model-year Soul EV in April, with sales debuting in South Korea by the end of the year. Hyundai is said to start selling its own EV starting in 2016.
