Sunday Drive: Rendering the future at Jeep and Ford
Sun, Apr 8 2018Last week brought us quite a wide variety of automotive news nuggets, and judging by the response of our own readership, the Jeep Wrangler pickup truck led the way. It's not expected to hit the sales floor until April of 2019, which means we've all got an entire year to wait, but that just means we have lots of time to anticipate its arrival. And we do so today with a series of renderings that show what the so-called Scrambler may look like in a few different colors. Another set of renderings depicting a hotly anticipated new vehicle follow just behind. The Baby Bronco – will Ford ante up to the retro-inspired table and call it the Bronco II? – will be one size smaller than the regular-grade Bronco, and we think it'll compete with the Jeep Renegade as a subcompact crossover with some real off-road chops. Moving onto some tuners, both old and new(er), we first present a sweet old Dodge Ram pickup truck tuned by none other than Carroll Shelby himself. The blue and silver striped truck looks so period perfect that it stands out as a star even alongside a quartet of vintage Shelby Mustangs with which it will share space at the Bonhams auction in Greenwich, Conn., this June. And finally we turn our attention to the Hennessey Veliciraptor, an absolute behemoth of a truck. Based on the most excellent Ford Raptor, the Velociraptor ups the crazy quotient with six wheels and 600 hundred horsepower. As always, stay tuned to Autoblog this week for all the latest automotive news. Jeep Comanche Moab Concept: Hell yeah!
Mon, Mar 28 2016The moment I saw the Jeep Renegade I knew it was a winner, at least in terms of styling. The Renegade's "face" is exactly what small 21st-century Jeeps should look like. It has loads of Jeep's visual heritage DNA – important! – that has been brought up-to-date in the best possible way. (Now if only they could graft that face on to the new-ish Cherokee...). Where the Renegade falls short is what's under the skin. Thanks to misguided marketing, it is saddled with a rather unremarkable USA-spec 2.4L four, undersized tires, so-so ground clearance, an iffy 9-speed automatic, and a questionable (available) low range. I don't mind the independent suspension; in fact I embrace it, as IFS/IRS is the future in terms of off-road suspension design. So, for me, the Renegade is a close-but-no-cigar vehicle, at least as it currently stands. This new Comanche, however, shows how the Renegade can evolve; both as a 4-door SUV, and in terms of how spin-off models can be developed. Big beefy tires, flared out fenders, and great ground clearance are the main ingredients that make this work visually. Still wish for a 3.6L V6 under the hood, but the 2.0L diesel isn't a bad alternative. Anyway, I think a Comanche pickup makes more sense than the predicted Wrangler-based pickup. Why? I'm not big on retro-vehicles in general. Rarely do they survive long term. Besides, the Comanche would be far more civilized and livable. I could see this Comanche pickup as a daily driver much more so than a Wrangler-based pickup. Yeah, I like and value creature comforts over ultimate off-road ability. I think most pickup buyers would agree. Finally, while there is a large devoted Wrangler following who would love a Wrangler-based pickup, I bet this Renegade-based Comanche would bring more new customers into the Jeep tent – especially over a much wider age demographic. Put a mustache on your Jeep this Movember for charity
Wed, Nov 2 2016Move over Lyft drivers, Jeep is getting in on the automotive mustache game. And it's for a good cause. The company announced that for the month of November, it will sell giant, bushy, black mustaches for Jeep vehicles through the Jeep Gear website and at dealers. The mustache is made by Carstache and costs $49.99, with all proceeds going to the Movember Foundation. The foundation supports improvements in men's health, and takes its name from the trend of growing mustaches in November. We would also like to point out that the product description says you shouldn't drive over 40 miles per hour with the mustache in place. So keep the 'stache wearing to your own face when traveling at highway speeds. Now if you don't have a Jeep on which you can put a mustache, well, you could probably put it on whatever car you have since it installs with some rubber-coated wires that thread through the grille. But if you really want a Jeep with a mustache, the company is running a contest in which you can post a photo of your mustache to Twitter or Instagram with the hashtag #JeepStacheContest for a chance to win a new Renegade. The winner will be the entry with the most creative, original and high-quality mustache. This contest is also an opportunity to help out Movember Foundation a little bit more. Jeep will donate $1 for every post with the hashtag "#JeepStache" up to $15,000. The contest runs until November 30, as does Jeep's donation program. Related Video:
