Stellantis unit FCA reaches plea deal in U.S. emissions probe
Wed, May 25 2022NEW YORK/WASHINGTON — The U.S. business of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles has agreed to plead guilty to criminal conduct and pay roughly $300 million in penalties to resolve a multi-year emissions fraud probe surrounding vehicles with diesel engines, people familiar with the matter said. FCA US LLC, now part of Stellantis NV, has agreed to plead guilty to a criminal conspiracy charge arising from its efforts to evade emissions requirements for more than 100,000 older Ram pickup trucks and Jeep sport-utility vehicles in its U.S. lineup, the people said. The plea deal, negotiated with U.S. Justice Department officials, is set to be unveiled as soon as next week, though the timing could slip. The company would then enter its guilty plea during a subsequent hearing in a U.S. district court. The affected diesel-powered vehicles span model years 2014 to 2016. FCA merged with French Peugeot maker PSA in 2021 to form Stellantis. Stellantis and the Justice Department declined to comment. The plea deal comes five years after Volkswagen AG pleaded guilty to criminal charges to resolve its own emissions crisis affecting nearly 600,000 vehicles in a scandal that became known as "Dieselgate." Volkswagen's deception precipitated additional scrutiny that resulted in officials on both sides of the Atlantic cracking down on automakers accused of using illegal software known as defeat devices to dupe government emissions tests. European automakers relied on so-called clean diesel technology to make vehicles that could comply with tougher environmental regulations only for officials to find they were polluting more on the road than during the tests that certified them for sale. Automakers are now focusing efforts on battery-powered electric vehicles. Negotiations between FCA lawyers and U.S. officials to resolve the current probe dragged on for years and across presidential administrations as the two sides haggled over whether the company would plead guilty and, if it did, the exact details in any criminal charge, one of the people said. One of FCAÂ’s employees is preparing to face trial on charges he misled regulators about pollution from the vehicles targeted in the investigation. Last year, the Justice Department disclosed charges against two additional FCA employees in the alleged emissions fraud. An indictment alleges the employees conspired to install defeat devices in vehicles so they could dupe government emissions tests and then pollute beyond legal limits on roadways.
Jeep Scrambler truck to debut at L.A. Auto Show next month
Wed, Oct 31 2018Jeep is planning to premiere a pickup truck at the Los Angeles Auto Show next month. We all know what that means: It's Scrambler time, folks. This news comes courtesy of a press release talking about the show in general. It casually mentions that "a pickup truck from Jeep" is coming. Up until now, we weren't sure when the Wrangler-based pickup would make its debut, but that's not a problem anymore. There sure aren't any other pickups from Jeep in the works we know about. The release details a few other debuts happening at L.A. as well. Audi confirmed we'll be seeing the E-Tron GT four-door concept. Mitsubishi is planning to show off a new concept car — it better not be an SUV with any Evo references. Hyundai is debuting an "all new" vehicle, and Kia is apparently planning on multiple new vehicle debuts. All of that is great, but the biggest splash is almost guaranteed to be the highly anticipated Scrambler. Everything is still speculation, but we're expecting the Jeep truck to offer both the Wrangler V6 and turbo four-cylinder powertrains at launch. We anticipate a diesel showing up at some point down the road, but almost certainly not at this auto show. L.A. mostly plays host to a whole lot of mobility pod news, but there are always a few big reveals like this one. Porsche fans will be able to see the 992-generation 911 on the show floor that we've already seen about 10 times over in spy photos too. Anton Yelchin's family suing FCA over the actor's death
Wed, Aug 3 2016UPDATE: Anton Yelchin received a recall notification for his Grand Cherokee a week after his death, family attorney Gary Dordick told Variety at a press conference. Dordick called FCA's recall "way too little and way too late." The family of actor Anton Yelchin is suing FCA for negligence and product liability, according to Automotive News. Yelchin was killed in June when his 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee rolled away, pinning him against a brick pillar and a gate. The Jeep Grand Cherokee, along with 1.1 million other FCA products, is currently under recall for a poorly designed shifter that may lead drivers to believe the car is in park when it isn't. Vehicles affected by the recall are at risk of rolling away. The recall was issued two months before Yelchin's death on June 19. It's believed that this is the first wrongful death lawsuit related to the recall. Although the shifter recall is linked to hundreds of injuries, Yelchin's death is currently the only fatality. There is a class-action lawsuit currently being filed against the automaker. FCA, in a statement to Automotive News, declined to comment and said it had not been served with a lawsuit. The automaker continues to urge drivers to follow the instructions in their owner's manual and become familiar with the instructions that were included with the recall notice. Related Video:
