I have for sale a low mileage 2001 Jeep Cherokee Sport Utility which was in an accident in Burlington VT in December of 20011. The owner's Vermont insurer classified it as a total, which doesn't really make sense, even based on the inflated dealership repair quote ( I have a copy). I found this vehicle at our local salvage yard. They had it put aside as repairable, which it most certainly is!
2001 was the last year for this classic Jeep. Chrysler updated the drive train (low pinion Dana 30 rear axle) and (distributorless) ignition., which compliments the rock solid 4.0L cast iron in-line six motor. I have had a number of these Jeeps over the years and still admire them. I'm reluctantly selling this vehicle because quite frankly, I have too many other pressing projects! I'd rather pass it along to someone who's going to use it, than have it continue to sit in dry storage.
The Good:
Some of the impressive things about this Jeep are the complete service history (extensive), the incredibly clean interior and overall condition. The carpets, seats, headliner and vinyl are almost mint. I've seen a bunch of these cars over the past 10 years, and that's the first thing that grabbed me when I saw it.
The drive train only has 96,270 miles and has been starting and running very strong. These engines are known for their power and longevity. The body damage does not affect handling or performance. Once started, the car runs perfectly on the alternator. However, I think the crank sensor module is going bad, as I've had to move the shifter to neutral to get it started recently. I just purchased an after market crank sensor for my '99 Cherokee on eBay - cost - @$40.00. Consequently I would say that the car currently has starting issues. The alloy wheels are in good condition, but the tires are worn. Most options appear to work fine, however, the radio is out - may need a fuse.
With the exception of the damaged areas on the passenger side, the paint is in excellent condition, There are a couple of other minor dents here and there, which may have happened when the car was transported - they can probably be popped out. The hood is mint - opens and closes perfectly.
The Bad:
The car took a rather peculiar hit on the passenger side, which caused a long crease above the drip edge, the passenger side windshield pillar is crushed, as is the front passenger door and both front fenders are dented.
I purchased mint salvaged fenders (LH + RH) and a mint front passenger door - all in white, when I acquired the car in April, 2012. My understanding is that the headliner will need to be pulled away on the passenger side to access the underside of the roof to repair the damage. The headliner is currently in mint condition - so care's needed doing that project.
The passenger side rocker will need to be replaced. The driver side rocker panel has surface rust, but is sound. All three doors open and close perfectly and the damaged passenger door opening appears to be OK, but until the damaged door is removed, we won't know for sure.
There is corrosion on both front floor pans. New pans are $81.00 each on eBay. I'm replacing them (along with the rockers) on my 1999 this fall. The front seat mounts have surface rust, which is normal for cars which have spent time in the snow belt. Other than the front floor pans, there does not appear to be any significant rust on the underside. The exhaust is good, but is probably an older replacement.
That's about it - this is a really nice Jeep, which if repaired should give many more years of good service - or buy it for the excellent drive train and interior. You won't go wrong!!

10 Facts about the 2018 Jeep Wrangler
Wed, Nov 29 2017The 2018 Jeep Wrangler is here. It debuts this week at the Los Angeles Auto Show and it's going on sale in January. After years of anticipation, it's finally reality. Here's our complete First Look, but to break it down further, here's things you'll find curious, cool, absolutely necessary, or just plain interesting. – The 2018 Jeep Wrangler (JL) will be sold concurrently during 2018 as inventory is moved out. This means you might be able to get a decent deal on the outgoing model, the JK. It gets a little confusing since the JK and the JL will both be 2018 models, which suggests the JK sell-down might take awhile. Mike Manley, Jeep boss, defended the strategy during a briefing in Auburn Hills, and noted it's somewhat common across the industry. – The doors: They lift out and have handles so you don't drop them. There's also half-doors that will be offered in 2019. Doors weren't standard on Wranglers until the early 1980s. – There are multiple trims. The two-door comes in Sport, Sport S or Rubicon. The Unlimited is Sport, Sport S, Sahara or Rubicon. Expect more to come. – The EcoDiesel arrives in 2019. This could be interesting. Jeep says it's in response to consumer demand, and it could be a differentiator from the Ford Bronco or other utes looming on the horizon. The V6 is the same engine from the Ram and Jeep Grand Cherokee EcoDiesel models. In the Wrangler, it pumps out 260 horsepower and 442 pound-feet of torque. – The Sky One-Touch power top is cool. With a touch of a button, the canopy of the roof scrolls back. Perfect for the urban or actual jungle. It's offered on Rubicon and Sahara four-door variants. – What they didn't do: The speculation surrounding the Wrangler's future hit a fever pitch in 2015, and most of rumors didn't pan out. It's still built in Toledo, Ohio and it's still body on frame. – Some of the rumors were (kinda) on point. Aluminum was used, fairly extensively. The doors, door hinges and front fenders are aluminum. The rear swing gate is magnesium. No one was speculating on that one. – The badges are cool, and Wrangler enthusiasts will love them. There's one on the swing gate that harks back to the Willys predecessors and offers cool stats, like the fording depth of 30 inches. There's also a silhouette on the shifter and the steering wheel is meant to conjure the image of the Y-shaped ones on military vehicles. You kind of need to squint for that one, but there's plenty of other Easter Eggs.
2018 L.A. Auto Show: 5-plus takeaways on Jeep, Honda, Porsche and more
Thu, Nov 29 2018The 2018 L.A. Auto Show is making a strong case that auto shows aren't dead. Carmakers are ladling out sports cars and SUVs featuring serious style and performance in Los Angeles, and it's a feast for the senses. We're talking the new Porsche 911, the long-awaited Jeep Gladiator and the stylish Mazda3. It's the best car show with the most important reveals since the 2018 Detroit Auto Show kicked off the year. Here are some quick reactions: The 2019 Jeep Gladiator is a rock star When the story went live on Autoblog, our traffic went straight up. I've literally never seen the graph go straight up. So yeah, you guys seem to like it. I do, too. It's everything I want in a vehicle, including enough of a retro feel that it satisfies my cravings for an old Cherokee XJ. It's more capable and likely more expensive than I originally anticipated, but Jeep is going to have to expand its Toledo factory to keep up with demand. Don't be fooled by whatever the politicians say when that happens. It's because people like Jeeps and pickups, and this is the hero sandwich of all of that. I'd likely go with the 3.6-liter and a manual transmission if I were buying a Gladiator, but the diesel is compelling, too. Gladiator is a great name, drenched in history. I like it better than Scrambler, which never felt right to me. Only issue: It's a little over-the-top. Imagine this conversation: "So, ready to go to Panera?" "Sure, let's take the Gladiator." I mean, it's a bit much to refer to your personal vehicle as the Gladiator. Unless Russell Crowe is driving it. Then it's fine. The 2020 Porsche 911 is conservatively brilliant Every time I drive a 718 Cayman, Jaguar F-Type or another 911 challenger, I wonder if the 911 may be over the hill. It's not. And it likely never will be. This latest generation, dubbed 992 in Porsche-speak, stayed the course. The back takes some Mission E stylings that give the 911 a more modern feel. The flat six gets a little more power. The digital-heavy interior looks futuristic and slick. But overall, it's a blocking-and-tackling update that should satisfy the purists and maybe draw in a few new Porsche fans. It's the right time for the 2019 Honda Passport This slots between the Honda CR-V and the Honda Pilot. That's serious segmentation, but it's another crossover, and it's undoubtedly what the people want.
