Selling a 1996 Jeep Cherokee with 172K on the odometer. It’s been a great vehicle for us, but it’s time for it to go to a new home. We are the second owner of the Cherokee, first owner was a naval aviator who had it from 1996 until the end of 2011—the Cherokee spent its time in California, Maryland, Virginia, and Florida.  We bought it two-and-a-halfnyears ago, but now our children are in college and we’re doing some downsizing of our vehicles.  This Jeep has been well taken care of and really has done no extreme off-roading.

Here are the particulars of the Jeep.

1996 Cherokee four doors – body is in great shape, there is no rust.  I will note that the driver’s door has some dent damage, although the door opens and closes with no problem.  I have included a picture of the door so you can see the dents.

The previous owner did some cutting on wheel wells to accommodate larger tires.  He did a great job and it looks well-done.  See the pictures.

Color – Red, this Cherokee was kept inside most of its life, so the paint is in pretty good shape. There is some peeling along the front fender, but for an older vehicle the paint is in good shape. It cleans up really well.

4.0 liter six cylinders engine, in absolutely great condition.  It pulls strong, no smoke at all, this motor had oil changes every 3,500 miles.

Transmission – 5 speed, pretty rare in Cherokees.  We put a new clutch in about 10K mile ago and being an older transmission, we put in Redline MT-90 transmission fluid.

Gearing – This Cherokee is geared low, max speed in 1st is about 10mph and the Jeep in 2H maxes out at 65 mph.  It’s geared great for the out-of-doors. No problem engaging the four wheel drive in 4H or 4L.

Suspension – Four inch high country lift, well-done and we put it on the rack recently to make sure everything was tight underneath.

Wheels – Goodyear Wranglers on American Racing centerline rims.  Tires are LT 265/75R16s.  They have @12K miles on them; they’re in really good shape.  We have a full size spare on the rear swing arm.

Interior – Light gray in pretty good shape, no stains or tears on the upholstery.  The driver’s seat is showing wear and some cracks on the side, but it is serviceable.

Maintenance – Both owners religiously followed the maintenance.  In the last 5K miles we replaced the starter, battery, and installed a better Flow Kooler water pump.  On the dashboard we installed a water temperature gauge.

Extras:

·         Spare tire swing arm with a fully mounted spare

·         Driving lights on separate switch in the front and twin back up lights on another switch – it’s great to have these lights when you out in the wilderness at night.

·         Class three tow hitch with ball.

·         Side rocker panels to assist step up if needed – these are legitimate well built steel side steps bolted on, not cheap cosmetic ones that break.

·         Roof rack

·         CD radio with six foot antennae

·         Virginia safety inspection good through March 2015.

·         There are no leaks with this vehicle, the transmission seals are tight.

Don’t hesitate to send me an e-mail with questions.  It’s a great vehicle, a lot of fun, and you’ll get many positive looks and comments.

Here are some questions I answered a previous time I put the Jeep up for auction (I had a buyer who never completed the sale)

Answers to Questions

Q:

Hi I have had these Jeeps in the past and like them. Just a couple of questions. 1. Does this problem with thee drivers door let much air blow in? 2. How does the heater work, since I live in IL? 3. Do you think this Jeep would make it back to IL if I drove it back? 4. Thanks for any and all info. Matt and Mary

A:

1 - Not much air comes through the driver's door, I feel some on a cold winter day, but not much. The other three doors are tight. 2 - Heater works great, so does the air conditioning. When it s 20 degrees here, the Cherokee is warm in the cabin within 5 to 7 minutes. 3 - Well, I have driven to Virginia Beach about 400 miles round trip with no problems. IL you can make, but this beast likes to go 60-65 mph on the Interstate, so it will be a 12 hour trip for you. Thanks for the questions.

Q:

Very interested and hoping to make purchase of Jeep in next week to 10 days. Can you provide more info on "severe" damage accident in 2012. Also, if you give me a sense of what you are hoping to get for the Jeep, I can quickly determine if we are in the same ballpark. I am in Texas, but travel to DC frequently for work - so may want to arrange a test drive.

Thanks for the interest. Interesting they characterized my son's accident as severe when the only thing that prevented him from driving away was a flat tire. Accident resulted in a flat tire that was repaired, windshield that was cracked and replaced, we had the door hinge re-welded to strengthen it, and a new left side mirror that we replaced. Some of the crumpling on the door resulted from this accident, although the door already had some dents from the previous owner, so we simply added to it. My son and I debated about replacing the door, but it works fine and frankly we think in our own way it gives it some character. We paid out of pocket from the accident--the windshield, mirror, welding, and flat (and tow) came to $800--most of it was spent to replace the windshield. For your planning, we live near Quantico Marine Corps Base, a test drive can certainly be arranged.

10 of 18 midsize SUVs earn 'good' IIHS side impact safety rating

Wed, May 18 2022

It's not terribly surprising that midsize SUVs earned better safety ratings than small SUVs in the latest side-impact tests performed by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Just how much better they scored, on the other hand, certainly raises an eyebrow. Ten out of 18 midsize SUVs earned the highest rating of 'good' in the stringent new test, altered for vehicles starting with the 2020 model year with a heavier barrier (4,200 pounds) that moves at a higher speed (37 miles per hour) and is fitted with a hard honeycomb frontal structure. By way of contrast, just one out of of 20 small SUVs earned a 'good' score.  SUVs that receiving 'good' scores were the Ford Explorer, Infiniti QX60, Lincoln Aviator, Mazda CX-9, Nissan Pathfinder, Subaru Ascent, Toyota Highlander, Volkswagen Atlas, Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport and Volkswagen ID.4. For EV fans, it's worth noting the ID.4 was the only electric vehicle included in the test. The Buick Enclave and Chevrolet Traverse scraped away with 'acceptable' ratings while the Honda Passport, Honda Pilot, Hyundai Palisade, Jeep Wrangler 4-door, Kia Telluride and Nissan Murano were deemed merely 'marginal' in the tough new test. Only two models — the Mazda CX-9 and Volkswagen ID.4 — earned a "Good" rating in every test category.  Interestingly, the Jeep Wrangler would have scored a 'good' rating if it were equipped with side airbags for the rear seating positions. It would likely be an engineering challenge to equip its removable top and/or doors with airbags, but the lack of that safety feature allowed the head of the rear passenger dummy to hit the vertical support of the top. Otherwise, the Wrangler scored good ratings across the board. The new Ford Bronco, which makes more allowances for side-impact safety, has not yet been tested.  The popular Hyundai Palisade and Kia Telluride SUVs stand out in the test with 'poor' ratings for driver pelvis injuries. The Nissan Murano, a vehicle last redesigned for the 2015 model year, was the only vehicle tested that received a 'poor' rating for its structure and safety cage. Videos of the tests of 12 of these 18 SUVs can be found on the IIHS' YouTube page. Fiat Chrysler halts European production as coronavirus hits demand

Mon, Mar 16 2020

MILAN — Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) is halting production for two weeks at most of its European plants to help protect staff against the coronavirus pandemic and adjust to a slump in demand, the Italian-American carmaker said on Monday. Italy has been the European country worst hit by the crisis and the first to enforce a nationwide lockdown, which has now been replicated by Spain and, to a lesser extent, by France as the virus sweeps through the continent. With all non essential services closed, including car dealers, and people forced home except for strict working needs, many forecast a heavy fall in car sales in March. FCA — which according to analyst estimates produces around 25% of its vehicles in Europe — said the suspensions through March 27 would allow it "to effectively respond to the interruption in market demand by ensuring the optimization of supply." Ferrari, meanwhile, said it closed its two plants until March 27. Ferrari said it had so far ensured production continuity, and it already implemented all the health measures decided by the Italian government at the two sites, in hometown Maranello and in Modena. But it was "now experiencing the first serious supply chain issues, which no longer allow for continued production." Marco Opipari, an analyst at Fidentiis, said a few weeks of closures was not a big problem in an over-supplied European auto industry and lost production could be recovered later on. "The real problem is on the demand side, people are not buying cars now, and sales volumes are expected to be very bad in March, with a real impact on automakers' earnings," he said. FCA said in a statement that production for its FCA Italy and luxury Maserati units would stop for two weeks, extending a temporary closure period already planned for some Italian facilities. Affected plants are Melfi, Pomigliano, Cassino, Mirafiori, Grugliasco and Modena in Italy, Kragujevac in Serbia and Tychy in Poland. The FIOM union said FCA's decision was "necessary". The carmaker said the freeze would help it to resume activity promptly once market conditions allow it. "The group is working with its supply base and business partners to be ready to enable our manufacturing operations to deliver previously planned total levels of production despite the suspension when market demand returns," it said.

Work at a Chrysler dealership, get free college education

Mon, May 4 2015

The cost of a college education in the US can put a student tens (hundreds, in some cases) of thousands of dollars into debt. FCA US wants to give its dealership employees a leg up, though, and the automaker is now offering a completely free education to them through a partnership with Strayer University. The workers can take any of the college's classes online or on campus through program called Degrees@Work. Currently, the offer is only available to employees Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge, Ram and Fiat dealers in the automaker's Southeast region, which includes Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Alabama and Tennessee. However, a national expansion will happen before the end of the year, Strayer spokesperson Cristina Henley tells Autoblog. The program will cover all of the students' expenses, including their books, according to Henley. FCA US sees this partnership as a way to improve the talent of its workforce, retain employees longer and possibly attract people wanting to take advantage of this free education. "Many of our dealers have expressed concern over the availability of talent to fill open positions due to business growth and turnover in their stores, especially in metro markets," Al Gardner, the company's Head of Dealer Network Development, said in the Degrees@Work announcement. Strayer has about 40 programs available, including in business administration, accounting, marketing, and more, and the university offers associate's, bachelor's, and master's degrees. It will also give FCA US employees credit for their work experience to get them a diploma even more quickly. FCA US Dealers to Offer Employees No-Cost, No-Debt College Education FCA US teams with Strayer University to develop first-of-its-kind dealer program Degrees@Work program open to all employees of participating dealerships Employees can earn no-cost, no-debt degree through Strayer University All Chrysler, Jeep®, Dodge, Ram and FIAT dealerships may participate First phase of program rollout begins with dealers in the FCA US Southeast Business Center National rollout expected later this year May 4, 2015 , Auburn Hills, Mich. - Employees of Chrysler, Jeep®, Dodge, Ram and FIAT dealerships will have the unique opportunity to earn a no-cost, no-debt college degree through Strayer University's Degrees@Work program, developed in collaboration with FCA US LLC. FCA US is the only company in the automotive industry to offer the program.
