This is a fantastic totally stock and original 1979 Jeep Cherokee S Wide-Wheel Quadra-drive 4x4. What makes this Jeep special and unique is its originality and factory options. Wedgewood Blue and Olympic White paint that still shines looks great on this truck, the graphics and optional Western Weave bucket seats along with full insulated color keyed original carpeting and door panels really completes the look.  This Jeep comes equipped with the Cherokee S package, with the optional 360 CID 2-bbl, TurboHydramatic with Quadra-Trac with low-range, fuel tank skid-plate, tow-package, transmission cooler, and heavy-duty sway bars. The bottom of the truck is as clean as the top. Additionally the following factory options where ordered.

The Convenience Group: remote control left outside mirror, electric clock, lights on buzzer, intermittent wipers.

The Light Group: cargo area, glove box, engine compartment, lighted vanity mirror, dome-map, and courtesy lighting.

It also comes with the following optional equipment: air-conditioning, power tail-gate window, rear-defroster, passenger mirror, roof-rack, AM-FM CB Stereo Radio (still sounds great), flipper rear-quarter vent windows, styled steel wide wheels (original paint), power steering with tilt wheel, S-Medallions, and tinted glass.

I purchased this Jeep from the original owner who special ordered it from the dealer, Henkell Pontiac Buick AMC Jeep in Victorville CA. It has always been garage-kept and has never been off-road, I don't think anyone ever even rode in it with dirty shoes.

There is zero rust and the maintenance has always been performed. It runs and drives great and needs nothing. Recently it has had a new master-cylinder, carburetor, tune-up, and water-pump, and chassis greased. Everything works, although I think the air-conditioning could blow colder. The original paint is in great condition and still shines (I regularly wash and wax it). There are a few minor dings and scratches and the graphics have hairline cracks from age.  There are old stone-chip stickers on the rear fender flares that have yellowed, I got one of them off but the glue is still there and I did not want to harm the paint so I left the other one alone, I don't know how to remove the adhesive residue, so that is for the next owner to play with..

This Jeep has a great patina and we get compliments everywhere we go. It drives great, no rattles or vibrations, tracks straight, brakes straight, decent performance for a totally stock drive train. It has the jack, lug wrench, good spare. I think it would even drive better with some new tires. The tires that are currently installed are older, but still have good tread.  Some people are into Corvettes or Mustangs, I’m into this old Jeep and treat it well, I just don’t drive it much and the rear seat does not accommodate car seats very well. I’m selling it to buy a house.

There just aren’t many Cherokees like this anymore and I don’t think many where ever ordered like this, I like the look of the Cherokee S trim better than the Chief trim.  I think the vintage 4x4 market is on the rise and vintage vehicles like this a great investments. AMC really made a great vehicle and where clearly ahead of their time. Call me if you have any questions at 312-972-7614 (cell). I’m located in Seattle WA and I have a clear title in my name, thanks for looking, Tom.

NHTSA closes investigation on 4.7M FCA power modules, no recall

Thu, Jul 30 2015

FCA US hasn't had the best time with recalls as of late. Not only did the company recently agree to greater safety oversight and paid $105 million to the government, that came just days after hacking fears prompted a 1.4-million model recall campaign. However, a recent decision to close an investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration means that the automaker doesn't have to worry about another major recall possibly affecting 4.7 million vehicles, according to the agency's report (as a PDF). Last September, the Center for Auto Safety petitioned NHTSA to investigate an alleged problem with the totally integrated power module (TIPM) on these FCA US models. The group claimed that a fault with the component could cause a variety of maladies, including stalls, not starting, catching fire, unintended acceleration, and airbag non-deployment. At the time, it also submitted 70 cases where this had reportedly happened. According to NHTSA, "no valid evidence was presented in support of claims related to airbag non-deployment, unintended acceleration, or fire resulting from TIPM faults and these claims were found to be wholly without merit based on review of the field data and design of the relevant systems and components." The agency did find signs of an issue with the fuel pump relay in some Jeep Grand Cherokees and Dodge Durangos, but FCA US issued recalls for the problem in September 2014 and February 2015. Without anything else to go on, the Feds don't think it's worth investigating this topic any more.

NHTSA investigating power modules on Chrysler Group SUVs and minivans

Mon, 29 Sep 2014

The Center for Auto Safety is officially petitioning the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to begin scrutinizing alleged problems with the totally integrated power module (TIPM) on about 24 Chrysler Group SUVs and minivans. The advocacy group claims that the part's failure can cause affected vehicles to stall or not start at all. NHTSA is still looking into the accusations and deciding whether a full investigation is actually warranted.
The CAS petition claims at least 70 TIPM failures, but according to NHTSA, six of the complaints are for models that don't have the modules. In 34 of the reported cases, the vehicles refused to start, and in 17 of them the engine stalled. There were also two allegations of smoke and one of a fire. However, none of these affected airbag deployment or resulted in a crash.
This petition isn't the first TIPM-related problem for Chrysler Group. A recent report in the New York Times alleged that it found 240 complaints potentially related to the issue on NHTSA's website alone. In September, the automaker also recalled 230,760 examples worldwide (188,723 in the US) of the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango replace the fuel pump relay circuit inside of the TIPM-7 with one external to the unit. The original part could allegedly cause the models to stall without warning. Even earlier, the company also recalled about 80,000 examples of the Jeep Wrangler and Dodge Nitro in 2007 to have the module reprogrammed.
