Refreshed Jeep Cherokee gets more conservative styling
Tue, Jun 6 2017When the Jeep Cherokee hit the market a few years ago, it created a bit of controversy within the Jeep community. The two biggest issues were the styling and the fact that the former rough-and-tumble Cherokee was now a soft, car-based crossover. While there isn't much that can be done about the latter, it looks like Jeep is planning to address the Cherokee's love-it-or-hate-it looks. These spy shots, in typical fashion, don't reveal as much as we would like. The Cherokee here has a good amount of camouflage covering the front and rear fascias, the two areas that generated controversy. It looks like the headlights have moved up and sit alongside the bumper, not below it. The seven-slot grille remains, but there would likely be fires in Toledo if that disappeared. The rear has been changed as well, and it looks like there is a body-width trim piece similar to that on the Grand Cherokee. When the refreshed Cherokee debuts, the Jeep lineup will be murkier than ever. More conservative styling would make it look like a baby Grand Cherokee, but that's exactly what the all-new Compass looks like. It seems the pair might step on each other's toes, but Jeep must hope it's better than going to another manufacturer. Look for a full reveal this fall. Jeepster name may be used for Fiat-based baby Jeep
Tue, 17 Dec 2013In 1948, Willys-Overland, the forbearers of Jeep, built a vehicle called the Jeepster. It was a funky little thing, designed as a mix of the more rugged Jeeps that came before with what was then a modern car, which arguably makes it the world's first crossover. The name was later revived from 1966 to 1972, which means for Jeep enthusiasts, it has some history.
Now, the modern Jeep brand may revive the Jeepster name for a new product, likely based on Fiat bones, that will slot in at the bottom of the brand's range underneath the soon-to-depart Compass and Patriot. The report comes from Australia's Drive, which cites a dealer source that has seen the vehicle.
That same dealer confirmed there is a link between the Jeepster and the rumored Fiat 500X, and that the former will be available in both front and all-wheel-drive variants. The source also claims both gas and diesel engines will be available, although as this is an Aussie site, we shouldn't take that to mean we'll get a diesel Jeepster in the US.
NHTSA closes probes on Jeep Grand Cherokee, Ford Freestar and Mercury Monterey
Wed, 09 Jan 2013The Detroit News reports the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has officially closed its investigations into 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee, 2004-2005 Ford Freestar and Mercury Monterey models. The separate probes found no issues that pose safety concerns. NHTSA began investigating certain Grand Cherokee SUVs over complaints that power steering hoses could detach during operation, thereby increasing the risk of a vehicle fire. Of the 24 reports of failure, none alleged smoke or fire in the engine bay, and Chrysler has since modified the power steering cooler assembly to reduce the likelihood of the failure.
Meanwhile, certain Ford Freestar and Mercury Monterey vehicles garnered a government probe after receiving complaints that the models were equipped with faulty scissor jacks. The agency had received six reports of the jacks failing or causing injuries, including one incident that resulted in a fatality. But NHTSA says the jack failure rate is similar to those found in other vehicles. In those six cases, the government agency found the jacks were being used for something other than changing a tire, and investigators could not determine whether the emergency brake was set or the rear tires were properly chocked.
