I'm only selling our hard-to-find two-door stick-shift 1998 XJ Cherokee because we're having a kid and two doors isn't going to cut it with a car seat to wrangle.

This Jeep has everything you need (Command-Trac 4WD, manual transmission, the famous 4.0 liter inline 6 engine) and nothing you don't (extra doors, power equipment that breaks, etc.)

We're the second owners. The Jeep spent its early years in Maryland and then, after we bought it with 94k miles, some time in North Carolina and now Brooklyn, NY. We've maintained it very carefully (oil changes every 3k miles, transmission fluid changes, differential and transfer case fluid changes, lubrication, air filters, spark plugs, cables, distributor cap, brake pads, rotors, shoes, and cylinders, etc.) We've replaced the water pump, the battery, and the tires. It never needs oil between oil changes.

It's rust-free except for a small spot at the bottom of the rear quarter panel on the driver's side that should be easy to take care of (see photo). See the photos of the undercarriage - it's in fantastic shape. This Jeep is all stock - no lift, no aftermarket modifications. We've never taken it off-road. It's never been smoked in. Heat works great and the air conditioning is cold.

While in North Carolina, we were in a minor accident that caused some cosmetic damage on the front passenger side: the plastic grille and fiberglass grille opening panel were broken, the fender panel and plastic bumper were dented, and the headlight and turn signal were broken. The insurance company decided that the cost of the repairs would exceed what they thought the vehicle was worth, but we kept it and repaired it, which means that it has a salvage title. The salvage brand did not transfer when I registered the car in New York, but, just so we're clear: the vehicle has a salvage title. We replaced the grille, grille opening panel, fender panel, and lights. You can see the discoloration in the plastic bumper. There was no damage beyond this (the hood wasn't damaged, for instance) and I'm happy to provide pictures of the damage for you to assess for yourself.

What else? There's a chip in the windshield (see photo). No FM stations on the radio (this could be as simple as a bad connection to the antenna, I haven't had time to check), and the rear speakers aren't in great shape. There are some rock chips (which I've touched up) on the front grille opening panel. The carpet in the cargo area has light stains in two spots. The headliner is sagging a bit over the rear seat. The front mats are a bit worn. There will probably be a few more miles on it when you get it, because we're using it (locally) until it sells.

If we weren't having a kid, I'd drive this Jeep forever. But here's your chance to own a classic! If you want to see it in person, just ask. And let me know if you have any questions.

We've also listed the vehicle locally; if it sells we'll end the auction.

2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee EcoDiesel

Tue, 26 Feb 2013

Choose Your Own Adventure... But Choose Wisely
Jeep has got you covered. We can say this without even having to know what it is you want, because there's hardly an option or configuration that you won't find in the 2014 Grand Cherokee. There are three different engines, three different four-wheel-drive systems (plus rear-wheel drive), four different trim levels - not counting SRT - two different suspension setups and five different settings for various off-road terrain conditions. If you happen to check the box for Quadra-Lift, you'll also have five different ride-height settings for the driver-selectable air suspension.
As you might expect with so many customization possibilities, the way a buyer checks the options sheet can have a profound effect on the final product and its capabilities, to say nothing of its price. Nowhere is that more true than with the Grand Cherokee's choice of engines, with the brand-new 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6 stealing the spotlight from the still excellent gasoline-fueled 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 and 5.7-liter Hemi V8 powerplants that carry over from last year. No matter which engine you choose, though, it will be paired up with Jeep's new standard eight-speed automatic transmission from ZF. This, ladies and gentlemen, is very good news indeed.

2014 Jeep Cherokee: Fall colors tour [w/video]

Thu, Dec 11 2014

The Trailhawk's rugged good looks were right at home against the backdrop of changing seasons. Regardless of where you choose to call home, you've probably seen, or at least heard, about the Pure Michigan ads, showing off all the splendor that the Mitten State has to offer. You can make fun of them all you want (several spoofs already exist), but as a native, I fully stand behind the idea that Michigan is a truly gorgeous place. The western coast along Lake Michigan and the northern half of the Lower Peninsula are seriously pretty, and vastly different from the southeastern area that houses big cities like Detroit, Ann Arbor, Flint, and so on. Beyond that, the Upper Peninsula is the closest you'll get to seeing vast spoils of untouched wilderness, and trust me – it's truly pretty. I've seen the world, but I still feel all warm and fuzzy every time I venture north to experience all the vistas that my own state has to offer. In the autumn months, the changing leaves in Michigan put on quite a display. Sure, this happens all over the world, but we truly embrace autumn in the Wolverine State, and practically every Detroit-based Autoblog staffer has gone on at least one fall colors tour to the northern Lower Peninsula to take it all in. That's exactly what associate multimedia producer Chris McGraw and I did just over a month ago, behind the wheel of our long-term 2014 Jeep Cherokee. The Trailhawk's rugged good looks were right at home against the backdrop of changing seasons, and we opted to capture the whole experience on video for this latest long-term update. The Tunnel of Trees is a picturesque stretch of Michigan's M-119 highway that starts just northeast of Petoskey. As you can see in the video above, the Tunnel of Trees is a picturesque stretch of Michigan's M-119 highway that starts just northeast of Petoskey and follows Lake Michigan's Little Traverse Bay. This winding road through the woods goes on for nearly 30 miles, largely unobstructed by neighborhoods, fueling stations, shops, or roadside fodder, and spits you out at the famous Legs Inn in Harbor Springs. (Top-notch Polish food, if you're hungry.) From there, you can either continue north toward Mackinac City and the Mackinac Bridge that connects Michigan's lower and upper peninsulas, or you can turn around and take in all the goodness again.
