   A Special Breed of Cat

I am selling this spectacular, one-owner, numbers matching, 1972 Jaguar XKE for a dear friend who knows a great deal about high performance collector automobiles, but little about Ebay. As a long-time driving enthusiast and collector, he developed this special car for his own driving pleasure and to satisfy his passion for timeless automotive beauty combined with exhilarating performance. From the stunning red exterior paint and original interior to the six gleaming Weber carburetors mounted atop the powerful V-12 engine, this classic British sports car literally draws a crowd where ever it goes.

Before going further, it's important to note that the total cost for the extensive high performance work and other upgrades done to the car and identified in the description below exceeds $44,000. In addition, less than 10,000 miles has been put on the rebuilt engine, Richmond transmission, rebuilt rear end assembly and other high performance upgrades since the work was performed.

After purchasing the car new from a Jaguar dealership in 1973, my friend drove and enjoyed the car in stock form until deciding in 1986 to significantly enhance engine horsepower and performance. After consulting with several Jaguar specialists before starting work, the 5.3 liter 12 cylinder motor was removed and thoroughly cleaned before being painstakingly rebuilt by a master engine builder tasked with producing an engine perfectly suited for spirited, but enjoyable, street driving whether on scenic country roads or interstate highways.

The thoughtfully planned engine building process included an in-depth visual inspection, blueprinting and measurement (CC’ing) of all combustion chambers. Stock pistons were removed and replaced with 12 forged 10.5 compression ratio Venolia pistons and rings. High lift and duration camshafts were also installed. All engine gaskets and seals were also replaced during the rebuilding process.

Six new Weber 40 IDF carburetors and linkages replaced the four stock Zenith-Stromberg units and were equipped with beautiful chrome HP air filters. High quality Inglese induction manifolds replaced the stock Jaguar equipment. Braided stainless steel fuel lines, twin fuel pressure gauges, and a high performance electric fuel pump were also installed.

Engine lubrication was greatly improved with the addition of a high output oil pump, high capacity oil cooler, Hi-Flow braided stainless steel oil lines and remote 2 quart racing oil filter. Engine oil pressure is excellent. Engine cooling was also greatly enhanced with the addition of a high capacity racing radiator and installation of two high output electric cooling fans. An Alison high output electronic ignition system, Accel high voltage electronic ignition coil and high torque lightweight starter were also installed.

The standard exhaust setup was replaced with tuned long tube stainless steel racing headers and a matching high quality Ansa exhaust system was added. The deep and throaty V12 exhaust note that's emitted from the four beautiful chrome tail pipes is nothing less than fantastic!

For the purpose of handling the significantly increased horsepower, the standard Jaguar gearbox was replaced with a fully synchronized Richmond High Torque/straight cut gear 6 speed transmission and heavy duty twin disc clutch assembly. A lightweight aluminum racing flywheel with hardened steel ring gear replaced the standard unit.

The entire rear differential assembly was professionally rebuilt and a 3.55 to 1 ring and pinion gear set was installed. The stock rear shock absorbers were replaced with heavy duty units at that time. In front, a high performance anti-sway bar and torsion bars replaced stock components.

Wilwood heavy duty brake calipers, rotors and braided stainless steel brake lines have replaced stock equipment. This affords a level of stopping power and control that inspires confidence regardless of speed or road conditions. The rear brakes were rebuilt with the rear end assembly and continue to perform well.

Beautiful and extremely strong Dayton 72 spoke tubeless chrome wire wheels replaced the stock wheels and are now fitted with Dunlop GT Qualifier tires that are in excellent condition. A fifth chrome wire wheel and full size spare tire in excellent condition resides beneath the rear luggage compartment.

Inside the cabin, the original Jaguar leather seats were retained and a set of Simpson racing restraint harnesses were installed to replace the inadequate original seatbelts. The driver’s seat is currently fixed in position where as the passenger seat slides easily on its original tracks. Because the steering wheel is affixed to a telescopic mount and both seat backs are fully adjustable, achieving a comfortable driving/seating position is easy to accomplish. The entire dashboard looks fantastic. All switches and controls are in great condition and work properly. The car is not equipped with air conditioning or a heater at this time. The tachometer and Smith instrument gauges function as they should, however a new speedometer cable is currently needed. The stock e-brake was eliminated to facilitate the installation of the larger Richmond transmission, however an electric unit is currently available from several aftermarket suppliers. The original am/fm radio is present, but not currently operational. The original deteriorated headlining was removed and has not yet been replaced. The original carpet was removed to accommodate the new transmission tunnel and shifter. It was replaced with a nice looking non-standard carpet that still requires proper trimming and hemming. All headlights, tail lights, parking lights and directional lights work properly, however the reverse lamp is not currently working. The horn works intermittently and needs repair. The windshield wipers work properly but the washer is not currently operational. All glass is in excellent condition and the hand cranks and rear window latches work properly. The rear cargo door release and latching mechanism also work as they should.

All of the cars steel panels are in excellent rust free condition. A few small rust spots in the lower rocker panels were repaired and touched up in the past. All painted surfaces were professionally prepared and resprayed with several coats of high quality single stage Dupont red enamel in 1986. Although the exterior paint is now 27 years old, it is generally in great condition as a result of the car always being garaged and well maintained. Some minor paint touchups have been performed over the years to fix small road chips and other minor blemishes. All door and rear hatch panel gaps are original and the bonnet opens and closes properly. The bonnet latch mechanisms are in excellent condition and work as they should.

While the professionally upgraded engine and other components offer a level of performance and handling far beyond that of a stock model, the car is extremely reliable and pleasant to drive. The engine starts easily whether hot or cold and idles well. The power delivery is smooth, progressive and torque is abundant anywhere in the rpm range. The twin heavy duty electric cooling fans (with a manual on/off switch) and large capacity radiator assure the powerful V12 engine operates at a constant 180 degrees and does not overheat. The power-assisted steering makes the car easy to handle and park in any situation. The $6,000 Richmond 6 speed transmission shifts through all gears perfectly and allows the car to be driven at highway speeds while maintaining low engine RPM and reduced fuel consumption.

This increasingly collectable XKE coupe has been owned and maintained by a thoughtful gentleman with a special passion for timeless beauty and spirited driving. Although this special Jaguar provides exhilarating performance and a visual appearance that always commands attention, it has never been raced, mistreated or involved in an accident. No, it is not an automobile for the Jaguar purist or the faint-of-heart. However, it is absolutely perfect for an individual seeking to own, drive and enjoy a very special breed of cat!

Good luck bidding on this extraordinary automobile!

Jaguar says F-Type sales off to flying start

Fri, 31 May 2013

As we noted in our recent first drive, Jaguar's luscious new F-Type roadster is a bit of a tweener in both size and cost, lining up in between rival Porsche's Boxster and 911. That one-for-two-segment strategy is showing early signs of paying off, with Automotive News reporting that half of the car's 2014 production allotment is already sold. We're not talking huge numbers - sports cars in this segment only "have a global annual volume of about 75,000 units and a market share of 0.1 percent," notes Jaguar brand director Adrian Hallmark. Yet the company figures the F-Type will work out to about 15 to 20 percent of its total volume of around 60,000 units.
From where we sit, this is all very encouraging news, but it's way too early to call the F-Type a smash hit. The sports car segment is known for its fickleness and its front-loaded sales curve, so the real measure of success will be how it fares over the next few years after early adopters get their cars. Jaguar will have to work to keep the F-Type fresh with new variants, and we hear it's prepared to do just that. The British luxury marque hasn't confirmed a hardtop coupe variant yet, but patent images and spy shots suggest one is on the way shortly, and it ought to extend the model's appeal greatly. A four-cylinder option and a manual transmission have also been rumored, and presumably Jaguar will eventually launch higher-performance R and R-S variants as it has done with various model lines, including its other sporty two door, the XK grand tourer.

Jaguar hints at what might become of XK after F-Type's arrival

Wed, 02 Jan 2013

Jaguar may move the company's XK further upmarket following the introduction of its forthcoming F-Type. The newcomer to the range easily shoulders the burden of carrying the Jaguar sportscar mantle, freeing up the XK to evolve in another direction. While speaking with Autocar, Jaguar Design Director Ian Callum said there's an opportunity to grow the grand tourer both in size and luxury.
Whether that means the vehicle will retain its two-plus-two seating configuration or swell to offer buyers even more space remains to be seen. Either way, the future will likely see the XK soften its claws moving forward. And that's no bad thing. Jaguar has a long history of building luxurious grand tourers more content to soak up miles of highway than bounce from apex to apex.
What else is in store for the brand? Callum seems to have kept his cards close to his chest, refusing to acknowledge ongoing rumors of a Jaguar crossover beyond saying the brand "had to take notice" of the popularity of the luxury SUV market.

All-electric Jaguar XJ coming soon on platform shared with 'Road Rover'

Mon, Jun 24 2019

We've been posting on the likelihood of electric Jaguars for a while now, especially the XJ leading the charge as a new EV flagship. Rumors at the beginning of 2018 predicted an XJ EV on our doorstep by the end of 2018, the 50th anniversary year of the XJ. By April this year, it was looking like the battery-powered XJ would use the I-Pace platform and make an appearance sometime in 2019. Now, Automotive News Europe reports that during Jaguar Land Rover's Investor's Day presentations, the automaker said it would debut a "large SUV and a large premium sedan" on its Modular Longitudinal Architecture (MLA) suitable for EVs, hybrids and traditional ICE-powered cars. The sedan in question is the next-gen XJ. Nick Rogers, JLR's product engineering boss, said electric MLA vehicles will get 90.2-kWh batteries that return range of up to 400 kilometers (292 miles) on the European cycle. That would effectively be the same size battery as the I-Pace, which rides on its own one-off platform, and the same range; in the U.S., the I-Pace is rated at 234 miles. It's said the XJ's design, produced by former Jaguar design chief Ian Callum and his team, has already been cleared. It swaps the four-door body for a five-door, a la the Audi A7, and introduces a new design language for the car and the carmaker. Car and Driver says the new statement sedan aims to be "a cutting-edge alternative to the BMW 7 Series and Mercedes-Benz S-Class," and Autocar saying it will "remain Jaguar's flagship in preference to a large SUV, such as the rumored J-Pace." The point of introducing the EV first is to establish the car's technology and sporting credentials — hopefully before the Porsche Taycan and Audi E-Tron GT arrive. Eventually, an ICE version of the XJ powered by an Ingenium inline-six should come; that will welcome buyers not ready to make the all-EV switch, a necessary move in keeping with the XJ's competition for global sales with the S-Class and 7 Series. However, leaving room in the design for a conventional drivetrain will force compromises that the all-electric competition doesn't face. Production of the current XJ ends at the Castle Bromwich facility on July 5. The new sedan is slated to be "announced in the near future" and built at JLR's plant in Solihull, which assembles Land Rover products. The same MLA platform will support a road-focused Land Rover as a sibling to the XJ, dubbed the "Road Rover" internally.
