European automakers gear up for Brazilian production

Brazil is the place to be, apparently. Toyota has been investing in the South American country, as has BMW, which announced a $261 million investment in October 2012, on the heels of an Audi factory announcement in San José Chiapa. The high-end immigration is only set to continue, as Mercedes-Benz and Jaguar-Land Rover have both announced plans to set up manufacturing operations there.
Mercedes is the big news here, as its new facility will see the German manufacturer invest 170-million euros for production of its next-generation C-Class and upcoming GLA-Class. "Brazil is an important future market. With our local production we accept the challenge and take on the competition," noted Andreas Renschler, Management Board member for Production and Procurement at Mercedes-Benz Cars and Mercedes-Benz Vans. Production is expected to begin by 2016.
Jaguar-Land Rover, meanwhile, isn't so concrete in its plans. The news of its investment in South America comes from a job posting for a plant quality manager in Brazil that was picked up by the UK's AutoCar. "Portuguese language skills will be definite advantage" for interested candidates, according to the job listing. The want ad follows on the heels of remarks by Jaguar Land Rover's Dr. Ralph Speth, who said there are "very intensive discussions" with Brazil's government. Unlike Mercedes, there's no mention of which vehicles will be produced in South America, although AutoCar thinks the Freelander, sold in the US as the LR2, is a leading contender.

Lister Knobbly returning to limited production for 60th anniversary

Lister Cars was one of the pedigree names of British racing from its founding in 1954 and then on and off until the early 2000s. The company combined its own lightweight chassis with engines from other manufacturers, many of them British (and especially from Jaguar). Last year, the name and the intellectual property were sold to a new company that planned to revive the brand. For Lister's 60th anniversary, it is building a new version of one of its most famous racecars, the 1958 Lister-Jaguar Knobbly. The 2014 Listers are built to the exact specifications of the original cars, and the aluminum bodies are hand-formed on the original jigs. It is offered in racing trim starting at 249,000 pounds ($409,618) and is certified for FIA historic racing. There's also a road-legal version starting at 259,000 pounds ($426,060), if you don't intend to race but do intend to drive. There are two engines available, just like in the original car. A reproduction Jaguar D-Type 3.8-liter inline-six with dry-sump lubrication pumps out 330 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque with a four-speed Jaguar gearbox. The other option is a 4.6-liter Chevy V8 with 315 hp and 290 lb-ft with a four-speed manual transmission. The Chevy-engined version also gets a slightly altered body with a higher hood to clear the engine. The first 2014 Listers will be delivered in the UK this April. Unlike many of these boutique sportscars, the racing version will be available to US buyers, but Lister won't federalize the road version due to the high cost. The 2021 Jaguar F-Type Heritage 60 Edition is fast, exclusive and classically green

The original Jaguar E-Type turns 60 years old next March, and to celebrate, Jaguar is building a limited run of a special F-Type. It's awkwardly called the 2021 Jaguar F-Type Heritage 60 Edition, but it's otherwise a subtle, classy example of the sports car. One of the most noteworthy aspects is that soft green hue. It's Sherwood Green, which was a color offered on the original E-Type, but hasn't been available since the 1960s. It's the only color offered here, and won't be available on other F-Types. Black and aluminum trim accents dot the outside, and they're paired with machine-finish forged wheels. The interior features a light brown and black leather interior, and there are special logos placed throughout. That logo also happens to be shared with the restored Jaguar E-Type Heritage 60 Collection cars. The center stack gets a unique aluminum trim that's patterned to match the back of an E-Type's rearview mirror. The F-Type Heritage 60 Edition is only available in F-Type R specification. That means it gets a supercharged 5.0-liter V8 making 575 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque. Power goes through an eight-speed automatic transmission to all four wheels. Buyers do get the choice of either coupe or convertible, though. Only 60 examples of the mean green cat will be built worldwide. Pricing hasn't been announced, but it should be a good bit more than the roughly $104,000 of a base F-Type R. Related Video:
