FOR SALE IS A 1971 JAGUAR XKE V12 2+2 COUPE WITH AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION AND AIR CONDITIONING. IT HAS THE ORIGINAL MATCHING NUMBER MOTOR AND CHASIS. THE SECOND OWNER HAD THE CAR FOR OVER 35 YEARS, IT HAS ALWAYS BEEN GARAGED KEPT IN MARIN COUNTY AND SAN FRANCISCO AND IS VIRTUALLY RUST FREE. THE BODY AND INTERIOR ARE IN VERY GOOD CONDITION FOR IT'S AGE AND THE PAINT WOULD CLEAN UP VERY NICELY WITH A BUFF AND WAX BUT WOULD NEED TO BE REPAINTED TO BE IN SHOW CONDITION. I RECENTLY PURCHASED THE CAR FROM THE SECOND OWNER AFTER NOT BEING STARTED THE LAST 12 YEARS. IT WAS RUNNING AND DRIVING WHEN PARKED. I WAS QUITE OPTIMISTIC THAT I WOULD BE ABLE TO GET IT RUNNING QUICKLY BUT THE MOTOR APPEARS TO BE SEIZED SO I HAVE DECIDED TO PASS IT ON TO SOMEONE THAT REALLY WANTS TO RESTORE IT. THE PICTURES TAKEN ON THE STREET IN SAN FRANCISCO WERE TAKEN THE DAY I PICKED IT UP. THE FUEL PUMP HAS ALSO STOPPED WORKING BUT THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM SEEMS TO BE WORKING FINE. THE BRAKE SYSTEM IS WORKING FINE AND THE ORIGINAL WIRE WHEELS ARE IN EXCELLENT CONDITION. THE BUMPERS AND CHROME ARE VERY NICE. THE CAR COMES WITH THE ORIGINAL OWNERS MANUAL AND KNOCK OFF TOOLS FOR THE WHEELS. I HAVE ALREADY SENT OUT BOTH AIR CLEANER BOXES TO BE POWDER COATED IN THE ORIGINAL COLOR AND ALSO THE TWO WATER TUBES THAT CONNECT TO THE RADIATOR. Jaguar's futuristic 'Sayer' steering wheel might make your morning coffee
Tue, Sep 5 2017In the not-too-distant future, it would be the only part of the car you'd actually own. If it were the subject of a surrealist painting from 1929, it might feature the tagline, "Ceci n'est pas un volant," the French word for steering wheel. Jaguar calls it Sayer and says it's the steering wheel of the future — the first voice-activated, artificial intelligence steering wheel that will be able to carry out hundreds of tasks and follow you from car to car. "Imagine a future of autonomous, connected and electric cars where you don't own a single car, but instead call upon the vehicle of your choice where and when you need it," the company says. "That's a future vision Jaguar Land Rover is exploring with Sayer, the connected steering wheel that could be the only part of the car you own." Automakers focused on developing autonomous vehicles have proposed doing away with pedals and steering wheels, but this is the first we've heard of that envisions the steering wheel, such as it is, as your veritable car keys in a self-driving, car-sharing world. Jaguar says it could order up a ride to get you where you need to go on time, and it could even advise you when you might enjoy driving part of the journey yourself. No word on whether it can sync with a toaster for breakfast, however. The concept device is named after Malcolm Sayer, a Jaguar designer from 1951 to 1970 who's responsible for the E-Type and D-Type racer, which won the Le Mans 24-hour race three times in a row in the 1950s. It will feature on a Jaguar concept called Future-Type in 2040. In the meantime, it will be unveiled at Tech Fest at Central St. Martins, University of the Arts London on Thursday, Sept. 7, as part of the automaker's "Technology with Heart" presentation. Jaguar design chief Ian Callum rules out station wagons
Wed, Apr 20 2016If you liked the idea of a Jaguar wagon and were secretly hoping that the British automaker might bring one over, we have some unfortunate news for you. Not only will the company not bring any wagons to the North American market, but according to design chief Ian Callum, it won't be making any at all. "The [wagon] market is massively shrinking. I'm very sad about it but it's a very difficult market to justify," Callum told Automotive News Europe. German automakers Audi, BMW, and Mercedes can make wagons work because their home market is the largest for wagons in the world and any wagons they sell elsewhere are just chocolate icing on the Black Forest cake. For its part, Jaguar has produced two wagon models in the X-Type and the previous XF Sportbrake. That's a shame in Jaguar's case, because the XFR-S Sportbrake was a heck of a ride that left us wondering why anyone would want something taller. Those of like mind, we suppose, will just have to content themselves instead with German wagons like the Audi A6 Allroad, BMW 3 Series, Mercedes E-Class, and Volkswagen Golf SportWagen – and hope that Volvo doesn't get squeezed out of the wagon market as well. Harry bravely drives Jaguar XJ-S V12 1,000 miles to Monaco
Thu, Jul 30 2015There are a great many cars we'd like to take on a transcontinental journey – especially across Europe. And a good portion of them would probably be grand tourers with twelve-cylinder engines. We're just not sure we'd be as brave as Harry Metcalfe, who drove his 1980 Jaguar XJ-S V12 from his home in the UK all the way down to Monaco. Don't get us wrong, the XJ-S looks like a rather comfortable ride, and with the V12 is surely both smooth and powerful. It's just that Jags didn't have the best reputation for reliability back then, and we'd have been at least a little worried that we wouldn't make it all the way across France on this trip. Nor are we sure we would have wanted to without air conditioning. The model in question, as you'll find out if you watch the video, is an early 1980 example, produced just before Jaguar updated the line with the High-Efficiency versions. As such, it's got a bit more power and shorter gearing than later models. The XJS (as it would later be labeled) would undergo a number of updates over the following years, and would stay on the market until 1996 when the XK came along to relieve it. By Harry's reckoning, his early XJ-S was every bit as good as the Porsche 928 and other front-engined GTs of the era, and would have been more fondly remembered if it hadn't had to live in the shadow of the E-Type that came before.
