2000 Isuzu Vehicross Tone Edition on 2040-cars

This little beauty is one of the best examples of this iconic SUV offered at any time. I got it two years ago with about 62,542 miles on it.
As a hot rodder I can't leave anything stock so I started spending a lot of time lurking on the VehiCROSS enthusiast web site. There I learned of an early lover of these capable little tanks named Tone. I believe he was from Texas and his passion for these set the standard for all mods and improvements to come. I was able to locate, purchase and install a number of items he had specially made for these rigs. The rest I just learned from other enthusiasts cars and their trial and error modifications which guided me to successfully create the version you see below. For the person who buys this I'd highly recommend the VehiCROSS fourm for guidance and information. Probably the biggest visual mod was losing the factory chrome wheels. These new treads fill up the wheel well with a 'meaty" look without resorting to a lift kit, that has it's own side effects. The Nitto Terra Grappler tires are grippy when needed but quiet on the road. A really good choice. One of the Tone items I was able to get and install was an electronic short shift kit that restores the off the line launch lost to installing "big meats". I've also installed an electronic speedo compensator so it reads correctly with different diameter tires. The very cool built in trailer hitch was a Tone invention which he had fabricated in small batches. None were available when I wanted to install but members kindly emailed me all the specs and had a local fabricator build one for me. I incorporated improved depth that allowed a hitch lock to be installed. These hitches are not for pulling a big trailer but for me it was a way hanging a 3 bike carrier back there. The seats are in great condition because I have used Lexol leather conditioner for years which actually feeds the leather and doesn't dry it out. You can see in the pix I've removed the back seat. It doesn't look like anyone has ever sat in it. I will post more pix as time permits and the week goes on. Another major mod I do to all my liquid cooled cars is installing Evans Coolant. Evans is a Propylene Glycol coolant that contains no water and is much more effective cooling engines. It never breaks down and never needs replaced. Because there is no water, there is no rust, scale,or corrosion and has been proven in over the road trucks with well over 500,000 miles. The advantage in my cars is that it is very gentle on the engine and radiator. Check out the Evans website for more info. The old sound system with the old school CD changer was removed and three VDO gauges with a carbon face plate were installed in it's place Oil Temp, Oil Pressure and a Voltmeter all new and working perfectly. The Kenwood CD player has a thumb drive slot plus a iPhone port, removable face, all speakers replaced with mid level Pyle including new tweeters in upper door and topped off with a JVC mini powered sub under the drivers seat with a control mounted on the center console. New Bilstein shocks, new front axles/CVs, new turbo muffler and Supertrapp great sounding exhaust, K&N free flow, permanent air filter, new sunroof installed,Hella driving lights, Hella fog lights, a new front bumper[under cladding] back door release from button on dash or alarm key fob[s]. Junkyard Gem: 1988 Chevrolet Spectrum CL Sedan
Tue, Oct 16 2018After a not-so-successful run selling Opels in the United States during the 1960s and 1970s, The General looked to his partners in the East for the next round of low-priced GM-badged imports. There was the 1985-1988 Chevrolet (Suzuki) Sprint (which later became the Chevy/Geo Metro), 1988-1993 Pontiac (Daewoo) LeMans, and a bunch of Chevrolet and Geo machinery based on the late-1980s Isuzu Gemini. Here's one of the first of those Isuzus: a 1988 Chevrolet Spectrum CL sedan, found in a Northern California self-service wrecking yard. The first model year for the Spectrum (sibling to the U.S.-market Isuzu I-Mark) was 1984, and these cars wore Chevrolet badges through the first part of 1988. At that point, GM decided that its Asian-built imports would belong to the Geo brand starting in the 1989 model year, so 1988 models can be either Geos or Chevrolets, depending on when they were imported. Most Spectrums (Spectra?) were hatchbacks, so a 1988 Chevrolet Spectrum sedan is now one of the rarest 1980s cars sold in the United States. This is yet more evidence that rare does not equal valuable. The interior looks non-thrashed, and the odometer shows a startlingly low reading for a 30-year-old Japanese car. The buildup of rodent bedding in the engine compartment suggests long-term abandonment prior to the car's final ride to this place, possibly dating back 20 years. In keeping with 1980s design trends, the HVAC controls show vivid pink and blue colors, and the option to direct air at your feathered hair or your high-heeled boots. Perhaps the members of Poison owned this car. Most Spectrum buyers would have been too cheap to get air conditioning or an automatic transmission, but this car has both. You just never know what you'll find in the junkyard! This content is hosted by a third party. To view it, please update your privacy preferences. Manage Settings. As slick as city rain. Future Classic | 1990-1993 Geo Storm and Isuzu Impulse
Sat, Jul 23 2022You don't see a lot of Geo-branded cars on the road these days, despite the fact that the General Motors' captive-import brand was actually pretty successful for around a decade. Perhaps the most recognizable vehicle to roll into Geo showrooms was the Prizm, which basically amounted to a rebadged Toyota Corolla built in California (which means General Motors was competing against its own Chevy Cavalier in the compact sedan market). And then there were the Geo Metro sub-compact, known for years as the most fuel-efficient vehicle you could buy in the United States, and the spunky Geo Tracker SUV that carried on for several years wearing Chevrolet badges after Geo's demise. Those are all interesting vehicles, but for this article we're going to focus in on the sporty Storm model. Like the other Geo vehicles, the Storm was sort of a joint venture, in this case with Isuzu, the Japanese automaker best known for making SUVs and big commercial trucks. Back in the day, though, Isuzu had some legitimately intriguing little cars in its showrooms. The Storm was based heavily on the second-generation Isuzu Impulse (known as the Piazza in other markets). And, well, you see even fewer Isuzus on the road these days than Geos. MotorWeek | Retro Review: '90 Geo Storm GSi Why are the Geo Storm and Isuzu Impulse future classics? They may never actually be "classics" in the same way a Ford Mustang or Chevy Camaro may be, but they are still interesting cars. And for potential buyers of a certain age, memories of gawking at sleek-looking Geo Storms everywhere you looked mean the nostalgia factor is high. If nothing else, we're pretty sure a nicely kept Storm or Impulse would draw a certain crowd at a local car show. While the Storm was way more popular with American buyers in the 1990s, the rarity of the Impulse means it's probably the more desirable option if future collectibility is a factor. What is the ideal example of the Geo Storm or Isuzu Impulse? The most valuable version of the duo is surely the rare Isuzu Impulse RS (the silver car above) with all-wheel drive and a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine that spun out 160 horsepower and 150 pound-feet of torque. According to reports, only about 600 of these machines were sold in the States — complete with "Handling by Lotus" badging (General Motors held sizable stakes in both brands at the time) — which means they aren't very easy to find for sale.
Junkyard Gem: 1980 Chevrolet LUV Mikado
Sat, Oct 9 2021During the 1970s and into the 1980s, each member of the Detroit Big Three imported Japanese small pickups and sold them with Ford (Mazda Proceed), Dodge/Plymouth (Mitsubishi Forte), or Chevrolet (Isuzu Faster) badges here. Ford developed the Ranger and killed the Courier for 1983 (though Americans could still buy the Mazda-badged version all the way through 1993), while The General axed the LUV after the S-10 debuted in the 1982 model year. Isuzu sold the same truck as the P'up through 1987, though, and we might as well follow up our recent P'up Junkyard Gem with its LUV predecessor. LUV stood for Light Utility Vehicle, and I've managed to spot a handful in the boneyards over the years. This one now resides in a yard in northeastern Colorado. The Mikado trim package included striped seat upholstery and a sporty steering wheel, plus these cool dash badges. As far as I can tell, no LUV Mikado advertising featured any Gilbert and Sullivan tunes. This one is fairly rusty for Front Range Colorado, and it has endured a bed swap from some other small truck. The engine is the 75-horse Isuzu 1.8-liter. Members of this engine family went into everything from Chevy Chevettes to Isuzu Troopers in the United States. Very unusually for a small pickup during the Malaise Era, this one has a luxurious automatic transmission. Acceleration must have been a leisurely affair in this truck. Air conditioning? Unheard of! Someone stuck every one of their lunchtime apple stickers on the driver's door. After 41 years of work, this truck is done. Come on strong in a LUV of your own!
