Anecdotes on Isuzu VehiCross - courtesy of "http://www.theautochannel.com/vehicles/new/reviews/1999/solo9940.html" and Wikipedia: Once in a while, a manufacturer's "Concept Car" display at a show draws an unusual amount of attention. This is true of Isuzu's VehiCROSS, an "unusual" looking SUV unveiled at the 1997 Tokyo Auto Show where it received rave reviews. Based on the stubby two- door Isuzu Trooper, it was futuristic enough as well as affordable enough to see limited production worldwide. OUTSIDE -VehiCROSS looks like no other SUV on the road today. It is short and stubby, with a sleek, slicked-back profile and a pair of snake-eye headlights that extend into the hood line while its grille contains what looks like a set of painted fangs hanging from the top. The unpainted lower half of the body is made of a scratch and dent- resistant polymer material, seemingly held in place by exposed Allen screws spaced at various intervals around the body. The fuel filler cap looks like it belongs on an airplane. Washboard ribbing on the doors give it a "tough" look, while a bulge on the rear door contains a spare tire within the door itself. Polished 16-inch alloy wheels and mud and snow tires are standard. INSIDE -A pair of Recaro bucket seats are both supportive and comfortable. Covered in black and red leather, their heavy bolstering means that drivers and passengers won't slip away during heavy cornering and off-road maneuvers. The door trim has retro, faux carbon fiber inserts, but the dashboard and shifter don't match its spectacular exterior and appear to have been lifted directly from the Rodeo. It holds four adults...It is well equipped with standard items, among which are air conditioning, power windows, outside mirrors and door locks, intermittent wipers, tilt steering and an AM/FM/cassette stereo. Back seats fold all the way down and provide a huge trunk space. ON THE ROAD -A 3.5 liter V6 engine provides power for VehiCROSS. It uses double overhead camshafts, 24 valves, a variable intake system, electronic fuel injection and coil-on-plug ignition. It produces 215 horsepower and 230 pound-feet of torque, though VehiCROSS's nearly 4000-pound curb weight saps mostly of its zoomy potential. A four-speed automatic transmission is the only gearbox available, and it features a winter mode to reduce wheelspin on icy roads. Also standard is Isuzu's Torque-On-Demand four-wheel drive system which senses impending wheel slip and automatically sends power to the front wheels, up to 50 percent if needed. This system requires no driver input, but if a particularly sticky off-road situation arises, VehiCROSS also offers a driver- selectable Four-Low mode for extra torque. During around-town normal driving, VehiCROSS is in two-wheel drive, however. BEHIND THE WHEEL -VehiCROSS rides on a full-length truck-type ladder frame and uses double wishbone independent front suspension with a solid rear axle. Like many of today's SUVs, there are torsion bars up front while the solid rear axle rides on coil springs, and is located by long radius arms and a lateral link. Unique to the industry, however, is the use of sophisticated aluminum shock absorbers with separate expansion reservoirs. This type of shock is used on many cross-country motocross motorcycles, and the goal is to separate the oil and gas inside the shock to eliminate foaming or cavitation. This system gives better rebound and damping, especially when the VehiCROSS is taken off-road where multiple bouncing and unusually long shock travel would wreak havoc inside a conventional unit. Heavy sway bars both front and rear give VehiCROSS the ability to stay flat and poised during hard cornering. The ride is firm but well-damped. Sharp, accurate steering gives good on-center feel, while four-wheel disc brakes and an anti-lock braking system (ABS) provide nearly fade-less, positive braking power. Awards: Motor Trend featured the VehiCROSS on its May 1999 cover, and included it in its "Top 10 Sport Utilities" for Most Unique Styling. Stage 2 and 4 Class Winner, 1998 Paris-Dakar Rally Class Winner 1999 Australian Safari Rally Winner "Most Unique Styling" Motor Trend 1999 Top 10 Sport/Utes Used by Austin Robot Technology as foundation for robotic VX in 2005-2007 DARPA Grand Challenge Four Wheeler featured the VehiCROSS as the "First Runner Up" for Four Wheeler of the Year in 2000 behind the Tahoe Z71; when pitted against: Chevrolet Tahoe Z71, GMC Yukon, Nissan Xterra, Ford Excursion and Mitsubishi Montero Sport. The VehiCROSS scored highest of all 6 Mechanically, for Trail Performance and Highway Performance. Future Classic | 1990-1993 Geo Storm and Isuzu Impulse
Sat, Jul 23 2022You don't see a lot of Geo-branded cars on the road these days, despite the fact that the General Motors' captive-import brand was actually pretty successful for around a decade. Perhaps the most recognizable vehicle to roll into Geo showrooms was the Prizm, which basically amounted to a rebadged Toyota Corolla built in California (which means General Motors was competing against its own Chevy Cavalier in the compact sedan market). And then there were the Geo Metro sub-compact, known for years as the most fuel-efficient vehicle you could buy in the United States, and the spunky Geo Tracker SUV that carried on for several years wearing Chevrolet badges after Geo's demise. Those are all interesting vehicles, but for this article we're going to focus in on the sporty Storm model. Like the other Geo vehicles, the Storm was sort of a joint venture, in this case with Isuzu, the Japanese automaker best known for making SUVs and big commercial trucks. Back in the day, though, Isuzu had some legitimately intriguing little cars in its showrooms. The Storm was based heavily on the second-generation Isuzu Impulse (known as the Piazza in other markets). And, well, you see even fewer Isuzus on the road these days than Geos. MotorWeek | Retro Review: '90 Geo Storm GSi Why are the Geo Storm and Isuzu Impulse future classics? They may never actually be "classics" in the same way a Ford Mustang or Chevy Camaro may be, but they are still interesting cars. And for potential buyers of a certain age, memories of gawking at sleek-looking Geo Storms everywhere you looked mean the nostalgia factor is high. If nothing else, we're pretty sure a nicely kept Storm or Impulse would draw a certain crowd at a local car show. While the Storm was way more popular with American buyers in the 1990s, the rarity of the Impulse means it's probably the more desirable option if future collectibility is a factor. What is the ideal example of the Geo Storm or Isuzu Impulse? The most valuable version of the duo is surely the rare Isuzu Impulse RS (the silver car above) with all-wheel drive and a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine that spun out 160 horsepower and 150 pound-feet of torque. According to reports, only about 600 of these machines were sold in the States — complete with "Handling by Lotus" badging (General Motors held sizable stakes in both brands at the time) — which means they aren't very easy to find for sale.
Isuzu truck concepts include honeycombed ‘toaster on wheels’
Wed, Oct 25 2017Isuzu took to its hometown auto show to highlight its work in developing next-generation transport trucks, showing eight vehicles and four powertrain systems at the 45th Tokyo Motor Show. The most notable of the bunch are a pair of concepts: the FD-SI, a light-duty delivery truck designed around principles found in the insect kingdom, and the Elf EV, an all-electric version of its light-duty workhorse featuring a large-capacity battery with rapid-charging capability. From a design perspective, the FD-SI will get all the attention — much of it probably of the bemused sort. In truth, it looks like a futuristic toaster on wheels, a rolling box structure fitted with honeycomb patterns on the side panels and a glass cab windshield that seems borrowed from a heavy-duty construction crane. It turns out the honeycomb motif is no mere design whim; Isuzu says its designers focused on the "group intelligence" of insects and tried to apply that principle to the delivery vehicle. So the honeycomb exterior is replicated in the cargo space as hexagonal tube-shaped boxes, which the automaker says is a good compromise between strength and storage space. Inside the cab, the driver controls and seat have all been centralized, with the steering wheel retractable, to encourage smoother operability and more comfortable living space for the driver. "We want to support the drivers, the front-line people of "Transport," with unconventional ideas," Isuzu says. The Elf EV, on the other hand, is a zero-emissions, low-vibration delivery truck powered by a lithium-ion battery that'll take the vehicle at least 100 km, or 62 miles, on a single normal or fast-charge. It sports a 4x2, rear-wheel drive transmission with independent suspension in the front and leaf suspension in the rear. Here's a quick list of Isuzu's other Tokyo offerings: A 6x6 all-wheel-drive truck, featuring single wheels on all axles, built for rough terrain such as areas hit by major natural disasters. 80th anniversary editions of the Giga heavy-duty truck, geared with a remote monitoring system to transmit vehicle data for remote analysis to ensure safe driving; the Forward medium-duty truck, which boasts 10 percent higher fuel economy than its 2015 version; and the internal-combustion version of the Elf light-duty truck, which is sold in the U.S. as the N-Series.
Porsche revives Pink Pig and Rothman's liveries for Le Mans
Tue, Jun 5 2018Long-time fans of Porsche, particularly its motorsports history, are in for a treat at this year's 24 Hours of Le Mans. The company took two of its 911 RSR race cars and gave each of them a famous color scheme from the past. The designs are part of the company's 70th anniversary celebration. The first and most unusual paint scheme is a modern rendition of the "Pink Pig." The design was used on a Porsche 917/20 in 1971. Just like the original, it's finished in a pale shade of pink with dotted lines marking out sections of the car. Each of these sections has a label for a different cut of meat from a pig. The other livery isn't as strange, but it's no less recognizable. It features a blue, red and gold color scheme of tobacco company Rothmans. Rothmans was a sponsor of many racing Porsches over the years, and the colors appeared on everything from Le Mans racers to the Paris-Dakar 959. This version on the 911 RSR notably lacks any tobacco branding or advertising. The two 911s with the retro colors will be competing alongside 8 additional 911s with more modern liveries. They will compete in the GTE classes at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Related Video: This content is hosted by a third party. To view it, please update your privacy preferences. Manage Settings.
