Hyundai recalls 205,000 Elantras for possible power steering failure [UPDATE]

Hyundai is recalling 204,768 examples of the 2008-2010 Elantra sedan and 2009-2010 Elantra Touring because of possible failure of the electrically assisted power steering. The problem in these vehicles is that the ECU for the power steering can "sense a discrepancy in the steering input signals and, as a result, disable the steering power assist," according to documents submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. If this happens, then drivers could suddenly experience a more difficult time driving the Elantras. According to a chronology submitted to NHTSA (that you can read in full as a PDF, here), Hyundai first became aware of this problem in 2010 and issued a TSB for it in 2011. At that time, just 0.25 percent of sedans and 0.36 percent of Touring models were shown to have the fault. However by October 2014, the issue had gotten worse, and 1.3 percent of four-doors and 1.9 percent of the hatchbacks were exhibiting it. The automaker believed that by maintaining manual steering the vehicles were still within the law, but "the industry has increasingly handled similar issues through safety recalls." In most cases, turning the ignition off and then back on rectifies things, but to fix this, Hyundai is updating the power steering control unit on these models. Electric Hyundai Kona crossover to have Bolt-beating 292-mile range

An all-electric Hyundai Kona will be revealed at the Geneva Motor Show next month, but we already know a few intriguing details about the electric version of the subcompact SUV we've had a brief chance to drive. According to Hyundai's press release, the Kona EV will be available with two powertrain choices, including "one of the most powerful electric engines on the market with a class-leading range of almost 470 kilometers." That would be 292 miles. That's using the WLTP standard, or Worldwide harmonized Light vehicles Test Procedures, which currently lists the Chevrolet Bolt as achieving 240 miles of range (versus 238 with the EPA). In other words, the electric Kona could be the new non-Tesla range king — the Model 3 Long-Range model is rated at an EPA-estimated 310 miles, and the Model S 100D is at 335. Hyundai opens up European Test Centre at N"urburgring

Anyone who's anyone among automakers tests at the Nürburgring, and the latest to join them is Hyundai. After fifteen months of construction and a €6.6-million investment - just shy of $9M USD - the Korean automaker has finally completed its new trackside testing center that was initially announced back in January.
Hyundai's new European Test Centre encompasses nearly 40,000 square feet of floor space on four levels in a glass and steel building that houses workshops, offices and hospitality areas. Acting as an extension of the company's European R&D center in Rüsselsheim, Germany, the new Nürburgring test center will allow Hyundai to conduct more regular and rigorous testing around the 73 corners and 13 miles of tarmac that make up the famous racetrack - definitely a good thing for a powerhouse brand that still sometimes fumbles when it comes to the dark arts of suspension and steering tuning.
