Hyundai Santa Cruze pickup is a when, not an if

Wed, Jan 13 2016

A production version Hyundai HCD-15 Santa Cruz concept looks all but certain to arrive in showrooms to compete in the growing small truck field, and Hyundai Motor America CEO Dave Zuchowski claims the official announcement is now just a matter of scheduling. "Our timing is not crossing our fingers and waiting for approval, it's trying to figure out when we're going to announce it," he said to Motoring. According to Zuchowski, the people at Hyundai's headquarters in South Korea have a say when the announcement comes, but he didn't indicate exactly how soon the model's production could be official. Zuchowski suggested Hyundai intended to ship the truck to places outside the US, too. "I'm not clear on the other markets, but from our perspective it's a vehicle that will be exported to other markets," he said to Motoring. The Santa Cruz was one of the most popular concept debuts at the 2015 Detroit Auto Show, and Hyundai execs in the US quickly started working to get a green light for production from headquarters. As of late December 2015, the automaker reportedly had the engineering feasibility and business case complete for the truck, and the bosses just needed to give final approval. Hyundai would reportedly use the Tucson for the Santa Cruz's underpinnings, and the model might be the company's first with a diesel engine in the US. The production version would enter a booming market for smaller pickups like the Chevrolet Colorado, GMC Canyon, Toyota Tacoma, and newly unveiled second-generation Honda Ridgeline. However, Hyundai's entry would likely be the smallest among them and target young crossover customers who want a little more hauling capability. Related Video:

Hyundai kicks off NFL sponsorship with 'D-Gate'

Fri, Sep 11 2015

After a long summer, football season is finally back. Hyundai is ready for the snap as the National Football League's new automotive sponsor, and the company hopes its new ad campaign scores with fans. The company's first NFL spot is titled D-Gate and it's about a group of buddies with a Tucson at an Arizona Cardinals game hoping to get on the Jumbotron. One guy brings something from home that doesn't make his wife too happy, as you'll see in the clip. The 30-second commercial is premiering during the season-opening weekend. The automaker's second ad called Field Goal arrives on Sept. 24 and is about a dad who loves the Houston Texans but has to deal with his napping newborn. Hyundai promises even more football-oriented advertising coming throughout the year. Hyundai has a four-year agreement with the NFL as the league's automotive sponsor, and the deal includes events like the draft and providing vehicles for the Super Bowl. General Motors previously held the rights since 2001 and it reportedly cost the company over $150 million a year. Kickoff Celebration Includes Two All-new Fan-inspired Television Ads FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif., Sept. 9, 2015 – Harnessing the passion of NFL fans, Hyundai's first NFL marketing execution launches literally with the very first kick of the regular season. During the season opening celebrations on September 9-10, Hyundai is the presenting sponsor of the 2015 NFL Kickoff activities that include a concert in the San Francisco Bay Area, home of Super Bowl 50. Hyundai is also unveiling two new NFL-themed television ads that highlight what it truly means to be a fan. "Our NFL campaign is all about conveying our love for football and providing opportunities for people to celebrate the game in a meaningful way," said Jacquelyn Kim, director, customer communications and promotions, Hyundai Motor America. "In the new television creative, we want to showcase what passionate fans do #BecauseFootball, and include the role our vehicles can play in that." Hyundai's New NFL Creative Hyundai's all-new Tucson SUV just recently hit dealers, and with its Hands-free Smart Liftgate with additional cargo space, is the perfect vehicle to help fans come game day. Hyundai's "D-Gate" 30-second spot, which will run during the season opener, is a fun take on some passionate Arizona Cardinals fans and their effort to create the ultimate symbol of support for their team.

The 2017 Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid starts at $23,035

Tue, Feb 14 2017

Good news, green-car fans: The Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid starts at $23,035. That means it not only manages better fuel mileage than the segment-leading Toyota Prius, it's also around $2,000 less expensive. Or, for $30,035, an Ioniq buyer can choose to go full electric, cutting the gasoline umbilical cord entirely. The Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid scores an EPA-estimated fuel mileage rating of 58 miles per gallon combined in its least-expensive Blue trim level. Stepping up to the SEL trim will add an extra layer of luxury goodies for $24,785, and the top-level Limited model will cost $28,335. Those two models earn EPA ratings of 55 mpg combined, which is still better than the 52 mpg combined estimate for the Prius. Hyundai's Ioniq Electric is the most efficient vehicle sold in America, with an EPA-rated MPGe (miles per gallon equivalency) of 136. Its range, though, is only 124 miles, which will certainly limit its usability for some potential buyers. We've heard that an updated Ioniq Electric will come by 2018 with a range of over 200 miles, which would allow it to properly compete with the Chevy Bolt and upcoming Tesla Model 3. Toyota doesn't currently off a fully electric Prius, though the $27,985 Prius Prime does get a plug for extended EV-only driving. Hyundai has yet to announce a price for the plug-in hybrid version of its Ioniq hatchback, though we do know it will travel up to 31 miles on electricity alone. Related Video:
