2018 Hyundai Accent packs compact car style in a subcompact

Hyundai's smallest American offering, the Accent, has undergone a thoroughly substantial redesign. The result is a subcompact sedan that's slightly wider and slightly longer, and looks very much like its larger Elantra sibling. The Elantra's hexagonal, slatted grille, headlight shape, and greenhouse have all been scaled down to the Accent's smaller body. Even the taillights echo the pattern of those on the Elantra. Fortunately, the proportions weren't thrown off in the shrinking process, so the Accent is a reasonably handsome, if slightly conservative, sedan. The new Accent also sports a rather spiffy interior, at least with the red and black upholstery shown. That particular color combo wouldn't look out of place in an Elantra Sport. The dash itself isn't particularly remarkable, but it looks attractive enough and fairly straightforward. It also features a 7.0-inch touchscreen with which the occupants can use Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. The seats can also be had with heaters. Hyundai touts automatic emergency braking as an available safety option. Mechanically, the big news comes in the form of chassis rigidity improvements. Hyundai says the new Accent is 32 percent stiffer, thanks in part to more high-strength steel. Under the hood is an updated 1.6-liter direct injection four-cylinder that makes 132 horsepower and 119 lb-ft of torque. This is a bit surprising, as the output is slightly less than that of the outgoing model. On the flip side, Hyundai claims this engine is 7 percent more fuel efficient, and that low-rpm torque has been improved. Plus, 132 horsepower is on par with competitors, and buyers who want to make the most of it have the option of a six-speed manual. A six-speed automatic is available, too. Pricing hasn't been announced for the new Hyundai Accent, but the sedan will show up at dealers during the third quarter of this year. Hyundai hydrogen fuel-cell SUV spied nearly naked

Back in August, Hyundai showed what seemed to be an extremely thinly veiled concept version of a hydrogen-powered crossover SUV at a special event in Seoul. Besides its showy gold paint and two-toned interior, it definitely looked like something that could roll down the production line with minimal effort. Well, judging by these spy photos, that looks like it'll be the case. Hyundai didn't even really bother to camouflage these test mules. The intricate taillight clusters carry over from the concept, as do the distinctive grille and Tesla-like extending door handles. Heck, even the wheels look to be exactly the same. And if we were to make a guess based on its proportions and size, this shares a lot with the Kia Nero. Featuring Hyundai's fourth-generation hydrogen fuel-cell technology, the FCEV (or whatever the compact crossover will eventually be called) features a 20 percent power increase over its Tucson hydrogen FCEV predecessor and is more capable in cold weather. The new FCEV will also have greater hydrogen capacity, featuring three tanks instead of two. The spy photographers didn't get a glimpse inside, but the "concept" back in August showcased a pretty production-looking cabin. If the exterior's any indication, it should look exactly like that. We've included pictures of that "concept" at the end of the gallery above so you can easily compare the "transformation." Expect the final product to be unveiled at CES in January. A 247-hp Hyundai Kona N crossover could be a thing

Hyundai's N Performance sub-brand has its sights on the Kona, the automaker's brand-new compact crossover, for its possible next makeover. If it meets with the approval of Hyundai brass, it'll reportedly do 247 horsepower courtesy of the 2.0-liter turbo engine borrowed from the i30 N. Hyundai's N performance boss Albert Biermann tells Auto Express he has instructed his engineers to develop a test mule version of the Kona to consider for production by the end of the decade. "I've told them to build the car and we'll see what happens with it getting approved. It has to be the i30 N powertrain, really," Biermann told the British website, adding that engineers could give the Kona different suspension and steering specs. The i30 N is Hyundai's not-for-America performance fastback and the N division's first offering. It's based off the i30, an overseas version of the Elantra GT, offered in three body styles — hatchback, wagon and "fastback" sedan — and fitted with a six-speed manual transmission. It has two engine options: the aforementioned 2.0-liter four-cylinder and a version generating 271 horsepower that will power the Veloster N, which will come stateside. By contrast, the Kona has two engine possibilities: a 2.0-liter four-cylinder that makes 147 hp and 132 pound-feet of torque, or a 1.6-liter turbocharged engine that does 175 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque. So the N upgrade would represent a significant boost in power over either of those engines. What other features could a Kona N offer? It could go the N route with a large grille, red-trimmed undercarriage, specialty badging and interior trim and suspension upgrades. Auto Express says upgrades could include a rear diffuser, small roof spoiler and exposed rear tailpipes. Hyundai has sold 5,874 units of the Kona through April since going on sale in February. It also plans an all-electric version for 2019 that will only be offered in the longest-range version in America, which is estimated to go 250 miles on the U.S. test cycle. That version will also be offered in Europe where the estimate is 292 miles of driving range. An entry-level Kona Electric will also be available in Europe with and estimated 186 miles of range.
