Hyundai bets big on crossovers sporting diesel, electric, hydrogen powertrains by 2020

Wed, Nov 15 2017

Hyundai announced a very aggressive crossover strategy for the next couple of years, with a total of eight vehicles launched between now and 2020. One of those is the already revealed sub-compact Hyundai Kona. The other seven crossovers range in size and fuel types, and Miles Johnson at Hyundai confirmed to us that all of them will be coming to the U.S. The first to launch is the aforementioned Kona, coming in early 2018. Also coming early that year is an unnamed hydrogen fuel cell vehicle. This hydrogen crossover will likely be sized and styled similarly to the FE Fuel Cell Concept shown at this year's Geneva show. A previous report about the production version stated that it would have a range of about 360 miles. Later that year will be two unnamed crossovers without any indication of size. They will also be joined by an electric crossover. In 2019, Hyundai has three crossovers planned for release. Early in the year will be a diesel-powered crossover. Hyundai gives no indication of what segment it would compete in, but so far we've only seen diesels in compact crossovers such as the Chevy Equinox diesel and upcoming Mazda CX-5 diesel. Mid-year will welcome a midsize crossover, and the year will be capped off with an A-segment crossover. Johnson also confirmed that this A-segment crossover will be smaller than the Kona. It could be an outright replacement for the Hyundai Accent hatchback, which did not return to the U.S. with the new sedan. Though we don't have much information regarding the unnamed and unspecified crossovers in the plan, Johnson did confirm that some of the crossovers in this rollout will include redesigned versions of existing offerings. This may include a new Santa Fe and Santa Fe Sport, or whatever the Santa Fe Sport will become. The company has previously stated that the Santa Fe Sport will be resized and probably renamed, and the regular Santa Fe would be larger the next time around. These changes would also make room for another small to midsize crossover. 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe shows off in four video teasers

Sun, Feb 18 2018

Hyundai is ready to turn the lights on the 2019 Santa Fe, and in at least one case, that's the literal state of affairs. The PR folks at the carmaker's Korean HQ released four teaser videos, one of them a commercial demonstrating a few of the tech bits in the coming crossover such as Safe Exit Assist. That driver aid notifies occupants about to exit the vehicle when there's another vehicle approaching from behind, and will temporarily lock the doors to keep passengers from wrecking doors, vehicles, or themselves. The other three vids highlight details throughout the Santa Fe's brand new bodywork, one of them devoted to the fourth-generation vehicle's lighting signatures. When Hyundai goes totally public with the crossover on February 21, we look forward to finding out which lights do what. Beyond that, we'll look to see if this split design lasts longer than the related aesthetic on the resurrected Jeep Cherokee. Elsewhere on the Santa Fe, we see there'll be multicolored digital dash gauges, the option of quilted seat inserts, and a set of dual rectangular exhaust tips. Hyundai's managed to keep most of the Santa Fe's secrets ... secret, but we do know the 2019 model brings a larger footprint and more interior room. Tech goodies should include Rear Cross-Traffic Alert with integrated automatic braking, a Rear Occupant Alert that reminds a departing driver not to forget any precious cargo in the back seat, and some semi-autonomous assistance features. There have also been rumors that Hyundai will do more with this model to differentiate the three-row version from the two-row Santa Fe Sport. The first dose of real info comes on Wednesday, the public reveal goes down at next month's New York Auto Show. This content is hosted by a third party. Ioniq Unlimited is Hyundai's way to get Millennials to subscribe to a car

Wed, Nov 16 2016

Let's state at the outset that a lot of the questions you're going to have about the new Ioniq Unlimited vehicle subscription program from Hyundai will not be answered in this post. This isn't because we didn't ask - we did - but because Hyundai is holding on to those details until some time after the service starts, which will be some time after the first of the year. If we had to guess, we'll get the information we seek at CES in early January. But, hey, we're getting ahead of ourselves. What is Ioniq Unlimited, anyway? It's a subscription service for the all-electric version of the Ioniq. Available only in California (during the pilot program, anyway), Ioniq Unlimited is an Internet-based way to get yourself a 2017 Ionic Electric. There are no negotiations, just a single price that you pay every month. That price includes all sorts of things: registration and Doc fees, recharging fees, unlimited mileage, and scheduled maintenance. Oh, and there's no down payment. Hyundai vice president of corporate and product planning, Mike O'Brien, told AutoblogGreen that the idea here is to appeal to millennials, who like to keep their transactions simple. Sign once, pay once, be done. Hyundai is trying to, "make car ownership as easy as owning a phone," O'Brien said. Maybe that's why the subscription terms are 24 and 36 months. O'Brien would not say if people could cancel early. As for the price, all he would say is that it will be, "very competitive." Yeah, we want more information, too. Whatever they cost, the subscriptions will be good for Hyundai, too, since the cars will be treated like leased vehicles (and thus owned by Hyundai's captive leasing program) and totally counted in the company's CAFE numbers. We'll have more details, well, whenever Hyundai feels like it's time to share. For more information on Vehicle Subscription Services, check out the Complete Guide. Related Video:
