Hyundai Kia asked to pay $28.9M in patent infringement case

After years of litigation, Hyundai and Kia have lost their hybrid technology patent infringement case against Paice LLC. The jury ordered the South Korean automakers to pay $28.9 million, but according to Bloomberg, because the violation was allegedly intentional, the judge could triple that amount. The automakers have announced plans to appeal the ruling. Paice's patent dates from 1994 on a piece of tech called the Hyperdrive, and it was a way to seamlessly switch between power from an electric motor and an internal combustion engine. This lawsuit was first filed in 2012 and covered the systems in the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid and Kia Optima Hybrid. According to Bloomberg, the companies tried to argue that the patent was no longer valid, but the strategy failed. "Hyundai strongly believes its position and will appeal any remaining adverse findings to the Federal Circuit," the company said in a statement to Autoblog. Paice is certainly no stranger to litigating over the Hyperdrive patent, though. It and Toyota had a similar court battle that lasted years. Eventually, there was a settlement, and the result was Paice getting royalties for each hybrid that the Japanese automaker sold. Similarly, there's a lawsuit pending against Ford over tech in the C-Max, Fusion, and Lincoln MKZ. Hyundai Statement: Hyundai believes that the verdict returned by the jury today in the matter of Paice v. Hyundai Motor Company et al., is not supported by the evidence. Accordingly, Hyundai has requested that the presiding judge enter a judgment in its favor notwithstanding the verdict. The other big draw of the Mirage is that it's incredibly cheap and has a long warranty. The base hatchback starts at $18,110 with destination, making it one of the cheapest cars on the road. And it has a 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty. So if you're looking for maximum frugality above literally all else, it's hard to top the Mirage. Honda Civic: 36 mpg combined While the Mirage wins technically, it makes many compromises to achieve its price and fuel economy. The rest of the list provides far better balancing of economy with being quality modern automobiles. And coming in second is the Honda Civic sedan (pictured at the top of this article) in EX trim with the turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder and CVT. This variant manages 33 mpg in the city, 42 on the highway and 36 combined. Going to the Touring trim drops fuel economy to 34 combined, and the 2.0-liter non-turbo engine gets between 33 and 35. The most efficient hatchback gets 35 mpg combined. The hatch is even available with a manual transmission, but it's also the least efficient (31 mpg). Then there's the Si and Type R, but with much more power and handling upgrades, they're basically different models. Regardless, almost every version of the Civic is quite frugal.

2019 Hyundai Veloster N price starts at $27,785

Pricing for the 2019 Hyundai Veloster N has been announced, with an MSRP starting at $27,785, including destination. Opting for the N Performance package will add $2,100. Standard performance equipment for the base Veloster N includes the 250-horsepower turbocharged inline-4, a six-manual transmission with rev-match downshifting, five different drive mode settings, an electronically controlled suspension, ventilated brakes, 18-inch wheels, Michelin Pilot Super Sport summer tires, six-way manually operated sport seats and an N-exclusive steering wheel. Other standard equipment includes LED headlights, proximity entry and push-button start, automatic climate control, two USB ports, Hyundai's 8-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and an eight-speaker Infinity audio system. The N Performance package ups engine output to 275 horsepower and adds an electronically controlled limited-slip differential, a variable exhaust, 19-inch wheels, Pirelli P Zero tires, and larger brakes. For comparison sake, the Volkswagen GTI starts around $28,500, the Honda Civic around $25,000 and the Ford Focus ST (may it soon rest in peace) around $26,000.
