We want a Hyundai with this N prototype's crackly engine

Mon, Jul 11 2016

Hyundai produces quality, mainstream machinery, but with the exception of the Genesis Coupe and Veloster Turbo, it hasn't brought many enthusiast-oriented vehicles to the table. Hyundai plans to change that with their in-house performance brand, N. The group will develop race cars and high-output versions of production cars, and if this prototype video is anything to go by, Hyundai N products will sound fantastic. The video shows what looks to be a Hyundai i30 hatchback, which we get in the States as the Elantra GT. And it sounds wonderful with a cackling, popping exhaust reminiscent of a rally car. Hyundai has not confirmed whether we will get this car or engine. We wouldn't be surprised if we didn't get the car, since a new generation Elantra hit dealers not long ago. As far as the engine, we certainly hope we will get it eventually, whether it's in an Elantra or something else – Veloster N anyone? Either way, we will get a slightly hopped-up Elantra Sport soon. Hyundai showed the Korean-market Avante Sport recently, which Hyundai confirmed would become the US-market Elantra Sport, more or less. It will feature the same 201 horsepower engine of the Veloster Turbo, and if it sounds even half as impressive as the i30 N prototype, it should tide us over while we wait for our own N-badged model. Hyundai reveals refreshed Grandeur sedan in South Korea

Thu, 29 May 2014

Never heard of the Hyundai Grandeur? That's alright, because that's just the name the model uses domestically. Over here it's known as the Azera, but it's back in Korea where Hyundai has revealed a revised version of what is currently the company's largest front-drive sedan.
Compared with the previous Grandeur and even the recently redone Azera we know, the new model is marginally longer and benefits from a redesigned bumpers front and rear, a new grille, new LED fog lamps and upgraded equipment. Inside there's a reshaped center stack with upgraded HVAC controls and an eight-inch nav screen, and keeping it all on the straight and narrow are all the latest electronic aids you'd expect of a high-end model from a global automaker.
Whereas the Azera is offered here with a 3.3-liter V6 packing 293 horsepower and 255 pound-feet of torque, back home Grandeur buyers get a choice of the 2.4-liter Theta II four-cylinder with 187 hp and 178 lb-ft or a 2.2-liter diesel with 199 hp and 325 lb-ft.

Hyundai plots a Nissan Juke fighter

Thu, Oct 13 2016

A few years ago, Hyundai Motor America CEO Dave Zuchowski suggested interest in taking on the Nissan Juke with a subcompact crossover. It looks like that project is coming together, as we caught Hyundai testing a small, curiously-styled SUV in Germany recently. The SUV is expected to share a lot of the same chassis components as the i20, a hatchback that's sold in other parts of the world, with the same engine lineup as the new i30, another hatchback that Hyundai doesn't sell in the America. In the United Kingdom, the i30 is available with engines including a 1.4-liter gasoline and a 1.6-liter diesel unit. Front-wheel drive would be standard with all-wheel drive an option. The heavily-camouflaged prototype doesn't give away a lot of the SUV's design. The front of the vehicle is hidden away, but what we can see the grille features hexagonal shapes instead of the horizontal bars that we've become accustomed to seeing in Hyundais. The headlights mimic the Jeep Cherokee's design with thin slits on top and larger, round units toward the bottom. At the back, camouflage hides the majority of the prototype, but the taillights appear to be different than the rest of Hyundai's offerings. The outline of the taillights resembles the same units found on the Intrado Concept, indicating the vehicle will get some design cues from the hydrogen-powered prototype. A single exhaust outlet protrudes underneath the rear end. The overall profile of the SUV appears to be smaller than the Tucson, which is currently Hyundai's smallest crossover in the US.
