Biden says U.S. is willing to continue talks with South Korea on EV subsidy
Wed, Oct 5 2022SEOUL — President Joe Biden has expressed willingness to continue talks with South Korea over recent U.S. legislation that denies subsidies to most foreign makers of electric vehicles (EVs), an official from Yoon's office said on Wednesday. Biden gave the assurance in a letter to South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol, who had asked the U.S. president last month for help to allay Seoul's concerns that the new U.S. rules would hurt South Korea's automakers. "We assess that President Biden reaffirmed his understanding of our concerns through a personally signed letter .... it shows Biden's willingness to be considerate towards South Korean companies in the future," the official said. The Inflation Reduction Act, signed by Biden in August, requires EVs assembled in North America to qualify for tax credits in the United States, but excluded Hyundai Motor Co and its affiliate Kia Corp from EV subsidies, as they do not yet make the vehicles there. As a result, only about 20 EVs qualify for subsidies under the new rules. Related video: This content is hosted by a third party. To view it, please update your privacy preferences. Manage Settings. Europe to get next Hyundai Genesis
Fri, 25 Oct 2013Hyundai is preparing to make a rather bold move with its Genesis, as reports are now stating that the next-generation rear-drive sedan, which we showed you earlier this week, will be sold in Europe. The first-generation of the Genesis sedan never crossed the pond.
The 2015 Genesis will enter the traditional stomping grounds of BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi armed with the same 3.8-liter V6 and 5.0-liter V8 found in the current model. All-wheel drive, a first for the model, will also be available in Europe. "We have to overcome the challenge of competing with established European brands. We expect the Genesis to play a crucial role in improving our brand recognition," Hyundai said in a statement.
Hyundai has done a fair job of changing its image in the US from a budget-minded brand into a legitimate, mainstream competitor that covers a broad swath of the American market, offering cars from the $14,545 Accent to the $61,000 Equus. That movement started in earnest with the Genesis, and it looks like Hyundai is determined to repeat that models success in Europe.
Motorcyclist gives rude driver a taste of instant justice
Wed, Nov 30 2016A British motorcyclist proved that no good deed goes unpunished recently when he tried to return a motorist's wallet and got nothing but abuse for his trouble. According to the Daily Mail, a motorcyclist somewhere in England spotted a driver in a silver Hyundai pull out of a gas station with a wallet and cellphone on the roof. As the driver pulled off, the wallet slid off the roof and landed in the street, where the motorcyclist retrieved it. With wallet in hand, the motorcyclist set off in pursuit of the Hyundai driver, but when he approached the car the driver didn't seem too happy to see him. As the rider approached, the Hyundai driver tried to escape him, then spat a string of profanity at the rider as he pulled up to the car's window. The motorcyclist then flung the driver's wallet at him through the car's open window, whereupon the driver quickly changed his tune. "Thank you so much, bro!" the driver is heard saying in the video. The motorcyclist decided that he'd had enough abuse and wasn't buying the Hyundai driver's improved attitude, so he decided to extract a little revenge. He grabbed the driver's phone off the Hyundai's roof. He held it up to the driver of the car and then casually tossed it on the ground. Then the motorcyclist rode away, presumably believing he'd taught the rude driver a valuable lesson.
