2017 Hyundai Ioniq takes three-pronged approach to electrification

Wed, Mar 2 2016

The Geneva Motor Show may be dominated by super/hypercars, but there is some more sensible metal on display. And one of the most reasonable cars might be the trifecta of Hyundai Ioniq models. This three-prong approach to electrification is a very aggressive move for Hyundai. A hybrid wouldn't be a big deal. Nor would a plug-in-electric model. But launching both of those vehicles alongside a pure EV is a very bold decision. In fact, if the full Ioniq range were to launch in the United States – which still isn't a certainty – Hyundai would be one of the only brands to offer all three branches of electrification in the same showroom. The hybrid model outguns the 121-system-horsepower Toyota Prius. Thanks to its 1.6-liter Kappa four-cylinder, 43-hp electric motor, and 1.56-kWh battery pack, there's a total of 139 hp and up to 195 pound-feet of torque. The plug-in model makes some changes to that formula, significantly increasing the size of the battery pack to a larger 8.9 kWh and increasing the power of the electric motor to an even 60 hp. Hyundai hasn't said if system output has been changed, but we do know the PHV will cover 31 miles on pure electricity. View 14 Photos As we covered in our original post, the EV Ioniq is something of an unknown quantity. Hyundai's lips loosened slightly in Geneva, though, revealing that the electric motor will produce up to 218 lb-ft of torque. That's in addition to 118 horsepower and an estimated range of 155 miles. And not that EV drivers are known speed demons, but Hyundai claims its newest EV will hit 103 miles per hour. This estimated range and torque output best America's two most notable EVs, the Ford Focus Electric and Nissan Leaf, although it's fair to point out that this duo is relatively long in the tooth. While it seems plausible that Hyundai will at least offer part of the Ioniq range in America, at this point it's just too early to be certain of anything.

Recharge Wrap-up: Hyundai Tucson Fuel Cell logs moon-worthy mileage, Kolle makes Renault Kangoo ZE pickup

Thu, Feb 26 2015

A French company called Kolle has made a pickup truck version of the Renault Kangoo ZE. The converted version of the electric van retains the same battery and drivetrain, offering a range of 106 miles, plus a bit more utility without the restraints of a roof over the cargo area. The tailgate is separated into two hinged doors, which swing open to the side for loading and unloading. Payload is about 1,433 pounds. The price is about $16,400, which includes incentives, but not the price of the battery. Read more at Inside EVs, and get more details at the Kolle website. Drivers in southern California have put enough cumulative miles on the Hyundai Tucson Fuel Cell to reach the moon. The hydrogen-powered crossover recently surpassed a combined 238,900 miles, which is the average distance from Earth to the moon. Mileage and other helpful information is gathered from participating owners periodically. "Surpassing this fundamental stellar threshold gives us a glimpse into the unlimited zero-emissions potential for Hyundai fuel cells," says Hyundai's Mike O'Brien. "If a small fleet of hydrogen-powered fuel cell vehicles can accumulate this kind of mileage in just a few short months, one can only imagine the potential for a zero-emissions hydrogen vehicle future." Read more in the press release below. A cross-country trip in a pickup running on chicken fat is scheduled for March 8. Cliff Ricketts, an agribusiness and agriscience professor at Tennessee State University, originally began the trip in November, running on biodiesel made from chicken fat. The 1981 Volkswagen Rabbit pickup's transmission broke near Kansas City, cutting short the trip between Key West, Florida and Seattle, Washington. With the truck repaired, he hopes to make the 3,550-mile trip next month. During his earlier attempt, though, Ricketts logged fuel economy ranging from 36 to more than 45 miles per gallon. HYUNDAI TUCSON FUEL CELL DRIVERS FROM SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA ACCUMULATE SUFFICIENT MILEAGE TO REACH THE MOON EMISSIONS-FREE Cumulative Zero-emissions Mileage by Fuel Cell Drivers Surpasses 238,900 Miles FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif., February 25, 2015 – Hyundai Tucson Fuel Cell drivers have surpassed an impressive threshold, recently accumulating more than 238,900 miles on the roads of Southern California, all while emitting only clean water vapor.

Hyundai launches crate engine program with 2.0L four and 3.8L V6

Tue, 05 Nov 2013

With all the commotion about the aftermarket going on at the SEMA Show in Las Vegas, Hyundai's timing for this announcement is just perfect - the South Korean brand will launch its first crate engine program.
Starting with the 2.0-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder and the 3.8-liter V6 from the Genesis Coupe, the program should push Hyundai even further in to the performance realm. Two versions of the 2.0-liter will be available at first - a $4,500 version, that's ready for its owner to bolt on a turbo of their choosing, or a $6,000 version, which includes the turbo and all its plumbing. Hyundai claims the cheaper version was designed with the aftermarket specifically in mind, as it allows tuners to easily fit larger turbos while spending less coin for parts that will just be tossed. The 3.8-liter V6 will cost $9,000.
"As more Genesis Coupes have entered the pre-owned enthusiast market since its 2009 launch, we've witnessed strong interest in leveraging the low cost potential of this rear-drive platform and its powertrains for the tuner market and motorsports. Now, with our new crate engine program, Hyundai is making it more affordable for these same enthusiasts to modify their Genesis Coupe, or perhaps inject some high-value horsepower into other platforms," said Hyundai's North American president and CEO, John Krafcik.
